Style Icons: Faye Dunaway /Ingrid Bergman/Emanuelle Alt

I love older movies and wanted to do a homage to two of my favourites - Bonnie and Clyde, and Casablanca.

I also styled myself as Emanuelle Alt, but I am not delighted with this one at all.

1) Faye Dunaway as Bonnie.
2) Myself as Bonnie. I actually wore a better version of this to a costume party two years ago, but I no longer have my mustard blouse. Black shoes and top are not right but the best I could do.

3) Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa
4) Myself as Ilsa. My hat is not right, but my only option here.

Wearing:

Tweed suit - purchased 2000 in Melbourne and at the time by far my most expensive purchase.
Black knit top
Micro nude fishnets
Black maryjanes
Leopard beret and cord hat
Nerf gun c/o 11 year old

I planned to wear the Ilsa look all day but then had an unplanned trip to our workshop where I need flat covered shoes so changed into jeans and boots.

The most authentic to me felt like Ingrid Bergman. The least authentic felt like Emanuelle Alt, I think so much of her look comes down to her long dark hair, and her very slim figure. As an hourglass I just did not feel it worked. I took off the heels and wore flats but kept the outfit on the rest of the day.

I used to wear a lot more vintage inspired looks but have moved away from this recently. Trying this makes me think I could make it work again.

Comments or suggestions for further looks are welcome...

WOW. How FUN are you, Sally. You've also aced this challenge with the best of them. I'm impressed.

Your Faye is festive. Your Ingrid is incredible. And your EA is enchanting. Killer all round, but Ingrid gets a Killer to the Power of Killer.

Ah Ingrid! I am so glad she gets a mention. This is a great homage. The hat is really good on you. And the Faye look is fun. I also loved all her outfits in the Thomas Crown Affair. But I think I like your EA look the best! You look fab. It may not feel like you but you can definitely pull it off. For further vintage inspiration, have you looked at MM or Elizabeth Taylor? They have such beautiful hourglass figures. Elizabeth Taylor in a Place in the Sun, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or Giant makes me want to drool. Or even her 60s looks, the VIPs for instance. I could go on and on...

I have to agree with Brooklyn that your EA is excellent, even if the thought of walking in those shoes make me totter. IB is a wonderful icon and you pull her off beautifully. Love the coordinated scarf, skirt hem and toy gun in the first one!

Thanks Brooklyn, I did think of Liz Taylor and Miss Monroe but was a little daunted. I am going to a cocktail party this weekend so may have more scope, although I am not wearing anything new (I don't yet know what I will wear to be honest!)

Thanks Shevia, I think EA is the coolest, and I do love her style, but it is not very me. I wear skinny jeans but I honestly don't think they are great on me, and her looks revolve around endless legs. I love these pointy pumps but they were not going to work for a trip to swimming lessons and working from home.....

My favourite was Ingrid Bergman too. That is a great tweed suit. The others are fab too...I just love Ingrid Bergman and i also like her daughter Isabella Rosellini. I know what you mean about EA....I found the perfect EA shoes in the shoe shop the other day but had to stop myself with "be realistic Sally, you wont wear them" But I admire those women who can wear those shoes all day. Even my flats I wore for my EA photo kept slipping off while I was running around at work.

Your Ingrid outfit is so chic, wow, love the hat too (I'd leave the jacket open - but I always leave jackets open). And I love Casablanca and Notorious.

I think I understand your feelings about EA style, I don't have her looks either, but there's something else : her style is a mix of rock and bourgeoise, has a naughty rich girl vibe, that I don't relate to.

It's an amazing feat to pull off 3 icons as well as you have. I love all the looks, and applaud your icon selections. Be careful with that nerf gun, you look very dangerous!

Wow, you have totally nailed this, with three very different icons. All the interpretations are stunning, but Ingrid is incredible. I hope you get to wear that sometimes.

Yes, the first two outfits illustrate that you could certainly work some retro back into your wardrobe. You wear the hats well; I especially like you in the fedora and in outfit 2 overall. Just beautiful. I am surprised you are not keen on the Emmanuel Alt inspired look--I think you look smashing in that one, too.
I got a kick out of your little automatic weapon in #1, "Bonnie."

Hah! The nerf gun made me chuckle...the amount of times I've been shot in the back with one of those darts...!

You really have done us proud with these three iterations Sally...so fab!I'm struggling to pick a favourite...maybe Ingrid Bergman, but really you rock all three.

All great interpretations but I love the EA one for you the most!

Back to look on the computer and cheer you some more. I think you did brilliantly on all of these. EA may not feel "you" but I am with Brooklyn in thinking that the outfit actually looks fantastic on you. I also love the others -- your pose in Bonnie and Clyde is hilariously scary and the Ingrid really does feel authentic.

I find these challenges so interesting in helping us see what we can and cannot incorporate from our loves into our real lives.

Thank you all! I think maybe I was getting too hung up on the fact I don't especially look like EA. I saw Suz, Coco and Carla nail some inspirational looks where they had a physical similarity to their icon. However I also saw Sally and. Xtabay with fab interpretations where they weren't as naturally similar but looked awesome!!

The Alt look is nice. I didn't realize this was not 'you'. Maybe it is the unsensible footwear?

Smittie, I think it was partly the footwear. I dress in jeans and a jacket often so it can't be that.

I will be honest and say that it was probably a lack of body confidence comparing myself to someone so tall and thin. I am not body shaming myself, more commenting on the fact so many of our style icons have a similar shape to Emanuelle Alt. And when this is intrinsically part of their look then replicating it can be harder.

I wanted to do an icon who was closer to my shape - I considered Adele, Christina Hendricks,Michelle Obama or Princess Diana (I am not saying I am the same shape or looks as these women, but they are statuesque women and shapes/looks that work on them are more likely to work on me).
