Style definition, again.... - YouLookFab Forum

Hope it isn't rude to start a new thread on the topic, I missed the first one an Angies link back to the forum discussion really got me thinking about what I would like to use

A year ago I wanted to join the UWP group, and might still, but now I have an actual style so I should figure out where I am coming from...before worrying too much about where I am going, no?

Here goes...Warrior, Check - got that part covered...to me it reflects by collection of clothes and boots/booties with buckles, buttons, brass, black, leather, laces and leopard. I think of warrior women from the military, the wild west, the native american, the tribal, and the civil war period. I use some element in every outfit.

However, I am not all warrior, as I much more restrained than Una and Rae are in letting their bada¤¤ out1

So the other distinctive character of my closet, is color and I mean hot pink, cardinal red, cobalt, blue, clear or emerald green, rich tones. Then there is paisley as my one passionate pattern. So I tried to imagine word for my love of a dramatic color and for some reason dandy came to mind. But then think of frills and ruffles, which I do love in some cases, but avoid in most others. Maybe i should be a peacock for color?

Last, I aspire to Sporty. in clothes style and life. I admire very much Stella McCartney, Gant, Ralph Lauren, and a touch of Tommy Hilfigure (I know Stella is a bit the odd item in the list)...and most of these are American Classic or Preppy. But what most appeals, I think, and is why Stella is on my list, is that they represent the outdoors in some fashion. And Stella is minimalism sporty. So I don't think I want to be Preppy, although I am not against it, but I want more to explore Sporty at some point.

I like it! I think Warrior Peacock. Or Soldier Peacock (for that 19th century feel). But then putting the Peacock first is easier to say... hehe... Sporting Peacock Warrior?

I loved the first conversation, and love your addition of the Peacock! I love color too - maybe I'm a RATE peacock... I'm noticing that my lack of polish is certainly something that makes me feel like "me". I may also have a touch of warrior, but I'm not sure. And sometimes I have a definite 'country' feel, but I wonder if that's diminishing, or becoming 'country industrial'. I could be a Country Industrial Peacock - ha! Is "country industrial" an oxymoron? Hmm..

Amiable, I don't see how country industrial could be more of an oxymoron than warrior and princess? Other than color wise it seems you must my complete opposite ..I imagine small prints and denim, but industrial stumps me...what is that like?

Oh, I think I refer to what most people think of as "warrior" as "industrial" - it works better in my head. I'm not doing battle (or anything violent) just working hard - like maybe building a steel building. It requires clothes that work and allow me to work... I think of farming as this too. I want my clothes to allow me to get down and work, either in a steel fabrication shop or a barn.... Hence the "country industrial".

Beth Anne, that is hilarious! But I see what you mean, and feel it too. I have really struggled to find a style I am comfortable with because of my background and where I live now. It doesn't suit me to dress like the locals (for shape and color) and it doesn't fit in to dress like a Ohio girl here. i guess I need to think more on my descriptor. But I m happy with my rubic at least.

Nice to see you around, and glad to hear you are feeling good about how your closet is shaping up.

Just some thoughts that might help you narrow down your preferences:

-- The whole urban warrior princess/UWP phrase actually generated some interesting pro/con discussion on the forum. To me it's a very "active/seeking" word -- may be worth exploring whether that direction maps to what you want or if a more "peaceful/passive until needed" word would work.

Thinking here of words like guardian, protector, champion and so on.

-- Re the color thing: Based on your starting point of peacock and dandy, I think you need a word that implies bold, standout, and strutting. Deliberate vs just decorative. I personally like peacock for you, but there may be something else that's more perfect...swashbuckler?

-- I could see Amiable's description of industrial being a good jumping-off point for you if needed. I always love the term "rugged" when trying to capture the idea of a hard-wearing, no-frills, purposeful item for work or play. Goes well with country, city, desert, jungle....

I like the descriptor you come up with. It seems to fit the style you have now and maybe the style direction you want to go in. I think making sure the words resonate with you (like Amiable feeling more comfortable with "industrial" than "urban") is a key to a successful descriptor.
