Are you curious about other people's closets? I know I sure as hell am...
I'm the self-described clothesorexic newby here. I used to love clothes, and I had a small-to-normal selection. Then, I don't know, life just happened, and I virtually never shopped and eventually I hardly owned anything at all.
I like being the person with a modest amount of basic clothes. I like being the person who can easily pack for a week away. I like being the person who once lived entirely out of a single small piece of luggage in a dozen countries for half a year. I don't like being the person who feels anxious about standing up and speaking to a group of strangers, about attending a cocktail party or funeral "appropriately" dressed, or who has nothing cute to wear on a date night with her own husband. So I am trying to change some of my bad habits. I'm not throwing out the baby with the bath water here. Lots of my habits are good habits: frugality, emphasis on inner vs. outer beauty, and a willingness to let go of old, unworkable pieces. Now I just want to step up my game.
We remodeled our home about 8 years ago, so what I have now is pretty much it for me on closet space. I have half of a regular shallow closet with an overhead shelf, 33" of a single bar and 3 built in cubbies. I have 2 additional shelves in a freestanding armoire. And I have a blank wall where I could add hooks, or a vanity or more shelving.
In the year and a half that I've been working on myself in this area I have doubled the number of hangers I use in my closet from 12 to about 25. (Yeah, I used to have 12 hangers and several of those held coats... sad...) I lost about 20lbs. last year and some of my new larger clothes had to go live with a friend. I've replaced most. But I would say I still have about half of a normal wardrobe selection. "Normal" meaning I could get myself comfortably and unselfconsciously dressed for virtually any social obligation in 3+ seasons of weather (I'm on the west coast, so the weather is mild...)
I've even created categories. I'm a freak, I know... My 12 categories are: 1) Outerwear, 2) Cocktail, 3) Jackets, 4) Day Dresses, 5) Woven Tops, 6) Knit Tops, 7) Jeans, 8) Skirts, slacks, shorts, etc., 9) Sweaters, 10) Flats 11) Heels, and 12) Boots. I just used these categories because they covered all the areas I think of as fashion basics when putting together outfits. I have three "capsule" stacks of clothes in my armoire that aren't part of my social wardrobe: Work-out, Sleep, and Gardening. The items in these stacks are not something I would necessarily choose to socialize in as you can well imagine but they get their job done...
So, I'm trying to flesh out every category I laid out above. And I think the limit for me is about 12 items max per category. That would allow me to have a nice number of choices in each without losing the collegiality of mixing and matching and wearing things multiple times. I really like that. It makes me feel like my clothes are really mine. Nothing seems sadder and more impersonal than something that hangs around for years and never gets worn. So I am gunning for above 100 but no more than 144 individual wardrobe items. And I currently have 67! (47 in the clothing category and 20 pairs of shoes. I like shoes and evidently have had no trouble making time for shoe shopping...)
I think I can do this. I'm willing to consider thrift store items, so it doesn't have to be expensive. And I'm ready to buy a few investment pieces that I will keep for years to come. I want to get this done before my 50th birthday, which gives me 2 years and 2 months.
Have any of you built up a wardrobe this way? Do you think 100 is too many individual items? How do you keep order and foster creativity and collegiality in your closets?
