Spin Off - What things should you really focus on buying now?

I woke up to Celia's great thread this morning of what things she is trying not to buy. This was so timely. I've been so tempted by Cocolion's great jeans posts. Denise and Rae look so awesome in their new sweat jeans. The sweatpants jeans and overalls are calling to me. But what I really need is a summer work capsule. I have to confess, I don't like summer clothes. I love fall/winter - that's my dominant season. So I try and make "three season" clothes span all four seasons. I end up being sweaty and cranky. So I am hoping to focus my shopping on light weight versatile dresses (I'm looking at you Shannon in your EF drapey dress), chic summer tunics, light weight polished toppers. Anyone else want to chime in on what they really should focus on buying rather than what they really want to buy?

Summer hats would probably be what I need the most. I am covered when it comes to all 4 seasons and with each new thing I experiment with I am sure I have more then enough clothes. Some upgrades would be welcome though, I do have HEWIs, but if I bought nothing for the next 12 months I could get away with SYC easily. But, summer hats are a hole now that I live where it gets hot and sunny a lot.

I need a new bikini for summer, otherwise I'm covered. But shopping for swimwear is probably at the bottom of my fun to shop-list!

I need breezy summer tops, some workout clothes and new bras. Otherwise I am set.

I don't really need much but I have had to focus and concentrate of replacing my favourite black skinny jeans. I view black skinny jeans as a basic or foundational garment so they are important to my wardrobe, but it's hard to move my focus away from all the new shiny things around

"Strategic" spring and summer footwear for work, that has the right color, comfort level, and modern- ness to complete or update a lot of basic outfits.

Basic bottoms, probably. Having to come up with something to wear a corporate polo shirt with soon has really reminded me of the complete lack of anything like that in my closet.

Wash and wear work-appropriate tops...no dry cleaning, no ironing. Metallic 1" sandals. Pink waterfall cardigan.

I need a bottom-half wardrobe for spring/summer. I have a couple of skirts and some pants that I can roll up. But I need true crops and shorts. I probably also need new swimwear, though I did buy some late in the season after most of my weight loss and they might fit OK. I shouldn't need new tops because my top half was always smaller. I'll probably want to freshen up my selections, though.

Bathing suit -- a need.

Footwear -- two pairs of shoes or sandals to update some that are outworn.

Work-at-home appropriate shorts or cropped pants -- I want to update/ upgrade these.

Summer bag

These are all high summer needs for me. Oddly, I haven't yet focused on spring very carefully. I did have a list, but the list was more a list of "wants." The fact is, spring is usually so short, so messy, and so cool that I don't really have a history of dressing for it. Then, when we do get true spring weather, I am totally caught up short. This year I'm in a better position because I have a couple of lighter denim options and some light-coloured tops and toppers.

I have not seen Celia's post yet, but Angie's blog post about a workwear capsule has got me thinking practically, at least for a few minutes.

Like Suz, spring is very short here, and also, summer tends not to be overly hot, so I think generally "warmer weather" which covers anything north of 60 degrees F.

What I need:
1 pair of straight and narrow work trousers that are not black (possibly light gray)
White / ivory sleeveless / short sleeved silky top for under toppers
Bright colored belt
Footwear: casual sandals that are not completely flat, work sandals whose heels are neither too high nor too thin, casual flats (oxfords or loafers)
Warm weather shift dress
Casual wear: cropped pants, white BF jeans, linen tees

What would be nice:
Summer bag
New swimsuit (although can probably make do)
A pair of wide leg pants (not completely sold on this style for me)
A midi skirt like the blush pink Creatures of the Wind (HEWI, obsession)

Of course, what I have my eye on is a $400 leather vest at Madewell, which as you can see is not on this list at all.

A new bike (road, not mountain) and bicycling shoes. And a new master bathroom and kitchen. Really, I do not *need* any clothes!

I should be ok with clothing for work. Since I work in A/C, I can wear 3/4 or long sleeves. lightweight sweaters and toppers. Where I feel a lack of good options is smart casual/casual options to wear on the weekend or evenings out...things that are cool enough for out hot summers yet still stylish. I think of couple of interesting tops and a few dresses would be a good addition.

- Smart casual is a gaping hole in my closet - clothes and shoes!

- Pieces that have a springtime vibe but are warm enough to wear when the temps are still hovering in the 40s-50s. I am so sick of dark colors, I could cry.

I'm hesitant to buy much at this point because I expect to be in maternity clothes a month from now.

The only thing I actually *need* is a bikini, since I lost mine in Athens last fall. I don't want to shop for it though! I'd much rather shop for things I don't need, like floral blouses, boots, and more jeans.

Gear, running shoes ... And my first sports bra o_O. Yep I have never exercised ever in my life .... And I think its high time now. Regular jogging is now in my schedule. Better late than never, right?

I'll join the bikini and workout wear shoppers here. And I always need a bra that properly fits, but it's been 30 years so far without, so I hold out little hope there.
Not really a 'need' but I'm also shopping for the right maxis. I had a few close but not quite right tries last year and I'm determined this year to get both a skirt and daydress that I can wear in my real life day to day and be comfortable and stylish in.

I am trying to buy pants, some of them to replace other ones that went to many times to the dryer, some cool enough to wear in summer.
Next step would be a casual summer skirt and finally light summer tops that coordinate with all of this.

I need lightweight summer blouses (not just tees) and shoes that are not sandals or boots. I'd much rather shop for dresses, coats or cardigans, as always.

I've caught up on decently-fitting bras although I could use another racerback one for summer. Lightweight woven tops in my new size, a new pair of sneakers, black heels for my conference capsule (not urgent since I don't have anything scheduled coming up, but you never know), and a dressy non-black pair of sandals for summer. I may need a few high-summer items too but I haven't pulled out the summer stuff, just the spring, so we'll see.

Ornella - I am so impressed your wardrobe is so complete. Honestly, I stand in awe!! I think we all have our HEWI's and hopefully something will turn up since you don't "need" anything. Great time to find that perfect piece. Sunhats so important. Are you looking stylish, functional or both? http://www.sundayafternoons.com has a lot of nice ones. The adventurer hat is super practical with it's down turned umbrella like brim and back drape and gives great shade but not as pretty as some of the other offerings. http://www.sunprecautions.com is another great site and http://www.coolibar.com has a lot of hats too. All the sites have great sun protective clothing as well.
Ingunn - I feel your pain on this. I hate swimsuit shopping although I love a great suit. Last year I just ordered tanks from zappos. Functional but not glamorous. Good luck on the hunt! I hope you find something smashing!!
El Cee - you also sound like you must have a fab wardrobe in place!! Kudos!! Well, as you know, I'll be elbowing you out of the way for the summer tops!! Bras!! OMG - I totally forgot. I so need to go for a bra fitting. I keep putting if off since I never have time, but big event at the end of June and I just need to go. Thanks for reminding me on that!! Definitely a NEED!! I could use work out top also but so hard to find nice comfortable ones. Must put that on the list.
Deborah - black jeans are just a must have and it's so hard to find that perfect pair. This is one of those areas where major duplication should be strongly considered. If you find a great pair, I would buy several if it's not cost prohibitive!! Good luck and may the hunting be good!!
Diane - That was on last years list. Victoria's Secret used to make these fab high leg briefs. Sexy, cotton and covered. Then they changed the material. Oy!! I ended up with undies from gap which were great but now they discontinued the style. Fortunately I bought a lot so I am literally covered for awhile. Good luck and remember if you find ones you like buy as many as you can afford!!

Aubergine - I hate shopping for bottoms too. Jackets are so much more fun. But it all falls apart without the basics. I hope you find some great pants and skirts that are comfy and flattering. Good luck and hope you find something to make that polo down right cool and edgy!!
Carter - wash and wear work tops that look great. Wow, girl that's the mother of all HEWI's!! When you find them please let me know. Every time I think I've found a great summer top it says silk, dry clean only - I'd still have nothing to wear and the cleaner would make a killing. Good luck with that, I'll have fingers crossed! I am sure you'll find the sandals and I can't wait to see what you pick. A pink waterfall cardigan - you give me hope the polar vortex will actually leave. I think that would be lovely for the warm weather. Good luck finding the perfect one!!
pastrygirl - bottoms - not as much fun as tops- but there seem to be a lot of nice choices for casual wear. So many great ones popping up on the forum. Can't wait to see what you select. A few more summer tops - some on order. I got new sandals but tags are still on those. Can't really say I "need" much - so it's more about things I want or want to upgrade. Or maybe a HEWI or two.

I probably need to replace a couple pair of worn out sandals, but as my summer shoes are stored away, I'll have to evaluate that in a month or so. Also need to replace 2 or 3 pairs of yoga pants. I have way too much of everything else but am wanting some silver shoes - not sure if they will be booties, pointy toe flats, smoking slippers or pumps. I'm trying not to get another pair of oxfords, I have so many already, but I love them so.

Suz - I don't htink I respond to spring as a season. Same transitional clothing as early fall. Since I don't swap color palates, I don't buy specifically for this. Just use a topper over lighter tops. Bathing suits - very dangerous. Good luck and may the force be with you!! The selection around me was so bad last year I just gave up. A couple of TYR tanks and I am good to go if not glamourous. I hope you can do much better than that!! Sandals - always fun. I sure you'll find something fabulous! Crops and shorts are fun to buy to. Looks like this will be a good year for them. So many choices!! Can't wait to see what you get!
Viva - that sounds like a great list! I think Angie must have read everyone's dreams last night!! Such timely and needed advice! It sounds like you must have a good start and are just filling in. Your list seems pretty doable and there should be a good selection of t's, shells and ss tops right now. No on your wants, OMG Viva, you had to find that amazing vest!! I love that madewell vest but I am trying to resist!! So tempting!! So great but pricey and I should focus on wants - although I could actually wear that over a dress as a summer topper.... are you thinking of going for it? or are you being good?
Janet - you are wise!! A bike is fab and of course good shoes for it. We did our kitchen and master bath 6 yr ago. Talk about the most incredible pleasure. There is just nothing in the universe that compare to the pleasure it will bring you every day. I love to cook and it is just a slice of heaven (PS after it is done!! The doing - well like childbirth - great door prize, enough said!!
Susie - ooohhhh can I say that is such a fun wardrobe hole to actually have to fill. If you are not rushed for an event, looking for beautiful dress wear. Well it does not get more elegant and soothing than that!! Wishing you a wealth of gorgeous goodies to tempt you!!
Stacey - you are being really smart. You'll really want to buy clothes after the baby when you get your body back to yourself. Right now focusing on a chic maternity capsule. Congrats!! I hope you find some lovely maternity pieces!!

Neel - good for you!! I used to love to run before I hurt my knee. Good shoes are key and remember the midsole cushion wears out long before the shoe looks worn so you need to keep replacing them. Definitely a great sports bra is a must. Good luck and congrats on doing something so wonderful for yourself!
Mo - I so hear you on the bra front. I have not found anything that fit well since my "training bra." I gave up and bought gap pull over bras (uniboob is not an issue at my size). But I really need to get one for a dress that I am wearing for an event. I am just going to have to suck it up and go. Good luck if you try again. Bikinis, wow, team bikini is so hot. No wonder there are no great one piece swimsuits. No one but me wants one. Did you see Nordies selection - they've got cut cropped rashguard bikinis. They look so fabulous! Laura -sounds like your wardrobe is in good shape too! Plus, I love shoe shopping so I would trade my list in a heartbeat. I wish you a good hunt on the tops but hopefully there will be a nice selection now. I know, it's hard to pull out he summer stuff when it's still so cold, but hopefully we will get a break soon. Need - some good merino wool or other fade-proof black socks, an underlayer white tank that is cool. Why haven't I bought these? I hate spending more for things like this than for tops and bottoms - but that is how the pricing usually works out for me :p

Nice to have - a second bag that isn't black - my black one is getting worn almost daily and I'd like to extend it's life some too. In search of oiled/vintage leather in a cocoa/espresso brown, or a bright colored leather with no fussy hardware/bling. Also under 40$ is my goal, which is the difficult part right now. A white belt - this will be easier, I've seen a couple of contenders that were almost right.
