Speaking of bags - updated - Rebecca Minkoff Cupid satchel K/R

ETA: I asked this question a couple of months ago and now I had a chance to try the bag I was thinking about - Liebeskind Botalato satchel (picture 6-7). I did not like it - too boxy. But I also tried out Rebecca Minkoff Cupid satchel (photo 8-9) and I really like it. What do you think? Even at 50% off, it is more expensive than any of the other bags in my collection but does it bring in more polish and structure than the crossbody bags I own?

I realized recently that I don't know much about bags and which styles are the most current - I have always just bought crossbody bags as the most convenient for me.

I have several crossbody bags but I am curious if there is one or two more bag styles that I should consider adding. I often read about stylish bag increasing style quotient of an outfit but don't know much about the type of bag that could do that.

Here are the bags I have ((1-4) plus another black crossbody bag for travel) and here is one of the bags I am considering (5-6), Marilyn Botalato satchel by Liebeskind.

I am ignorant about bags, too. I've only started (slowly) building a small collection. I like the ones you have, and I understand the virtues of a cross body. I don't know if they are out of style. I hope not.

People seem to divide themselves into satchel lovers and hobo lovers. Then there are those of us who commute so need a tote sized bag or a shopper. And of course a daytime clutch is current.

I like the bags you've linked to and was considering one. Firecracker got it in the taupe at the NAS. You can see it on her here.

It is quite a large bag, so that might be a consideration for you. FC told me she is 5'5".

Well, I love crossbody bags and was so happy to read Angie's comment that they are always in fashion. I'd happily wear any of your current bags, but #3 and #4 were my favorites. If you ever decide to get rid of them....

As for trying another style, have you considered a clutch for times when your crossbody bag seems too casual? I actually use my clutches quite a bit when I don't need the functionality of a larger bag. A rectangular clutch tucks quite nicely under your arm when you need both hands, and, since many come with a hidden strap, you can always sling it on your shoulder if you need both hands free. My clutches also fit quite easily in my tote bag so they work for situations where I need to haul more stuff to a certain location, but then want a smaller bag to go with an outfit.

I do have a poisoned eye, though, for bags that sport both handles and straps. I find the handles annoying when I wear the strap so I might just as well be carrying a regular handbag. I don't like having one hand occupied holding on to a bag, and I dislike carrying the weight in the crook of my elbow, so handbags are my least favorite. I bought rather an expensive one a few years back that just sat on the shelf until I gave it to my sister. It was a beautiful bag but, as I discovered, just not my style.

I've limited myself to 4 styles because they're only ones I'll actually use.

- grocery bags
- shopper totes (for work)
- clutches (for going out)
- crossbody (small errands & day outings)

I do have a couple of funky hobo type bags, but they rarely see the light of day. I find them annoying.

I think the new bag is more refined--if that's the direction you want to go in, it's lovely. The gray color is one you don't have. The other color is lovely too but echoes #1.

Elle Canada magazine had a nice summary based on European fashion week. Top trends are:
slouchy oversized clutches (think pillowy)
Sleek briefcase-type envelopes
top handle structured bags

I am stuck on satchels and my fave is Rebecca Minkoff's MABmini and cupid satchels.
#6 my fave of your picks.

Hmm, for me I don't really follow the latest in bag trends because I am limited by practical considerations (size, type of straps, zipper,etc). So I generally have:
Totes/shopper
Big hobos or tote/hobo hybrids
Casual weekend cross body bags - small and lightweight. I don't actually like my big bags to be cross body because I find wearing them on one shoulder more comfy.
Evening bags - only category where I follow trends, right now I'm liking slouchy clutches.
I used to love the prada style slouchy messengers too. Would love to get one but haven't seen many for sale recently. (to my point about not following bag trends!)

I think suz is right about people liking satchels or hobos but not usually both. I think it has to do with structure vs slouch. Personally I like my bags slouchy.
Eta: and the classic satchel handles are useless for me. I require all my bags to go over a shoulder.

I like both satchels and hobos. Satchels are dressier. However, my favorite kind is the multifunctional kind. There are lots of bags that have multiple straps and can be used in multiple ways. Like my new Orange Kate Spade bag. It has a smaller strap that you can use to carry the bag on the shoulder ( like a hobo) on your arm ( like a satchel) and crossbody. Those are the most functional. The one I'm holding on 2, a Kate Spade too, is very unstructured and looks good when less full ( I have my work laptop there). That one can be carried in the same three ways too. Those are by far, the most functional IMO. I have also this BR clutch that has 2 straps. I don't even get the straps out of the bag. I might leave the house with a clutch and come back with a crossbody, just by quickly clipping/ unclipping the straps. I like the Liebeskind bag.

Gaylene, I do have a clutch, which I use for special occasions. Because I am not good with bags without any handles, I specifically looked for clutch that also had a strap, sort of along the lines of Zap's idea of a multifunctional bag.

Zap, thanks for the visuals, great bag collection! I have also been wondering about a tote that could fit my laptop but generally I end up carrying the laptop either in a backpack or a laptop briefcase.

Suz, thanks for reminding me that Firecracker bought the Liebeskind satchel. I remember liking the bag she picked out but forgot which brand it was.

Rachylou, I think my bag collection is the same as your minus tote bags. I do have lots of reusable grocery bags, though!

Adelfa, yes, I right now I am attracted to the idea of a fairly refined bag.

Diana, I can imagine that with your commute, practicality is the top consideration! I generally just have to walk from the car to my office (about 5 minutes) but even so, I have to figure out how to balance a purse, a lunch bag etc., which is why crossbodies have been my best friends.

Great question, I never thought about cross functional bags because it has multiple straps. Some good insight here.

And oddly, my favourites are hobos and Cambridge satchels. I think the common factor for me is being slightly RATE. I like my satchels more rugged than refined (thick matte hide) and hobos are often rumply by definition.

I have been wanting to try a crossbody for a while though, and more so now that I must bring a diaper tote everywhere.

I am a big satchel lover so I love the one in 5/6, although it is a little bigger than I generally prefer.

Makrame, I like your bag collection, and I think all of them lend class to an outfit. You have nothing that looks dated to me. I don't think you have to have a very trendy bag to have it add style to an outfit; to me, it's more important that it fits with your style. You can take one outfit and use a change of bag to tip your look toward a different edge of your style, just as you might do with footwear or jewelry. Not that I do so all that often, myself! My tendency is to carry one bag pretty much all the time, although I have gotten to the point lately where I'm switching among a few different ones pretty regularly.

I bought the Liebeskind satchel in taupe, with the thought of replacing my current taupe satchel by Hobo, which I've carried for, I think, two years. I am still debating whether to keep the Liebeskind. It is actually about the same size, if not a tad smaller, than my Hobo satchel. But it feels a little bigger, or pehaps blockier. So I'm not 100% sure about it yet. But I do love satchels. I carry them over my forearm, resting against my hip, leaving my hands free to open doors and grab other things.
My other preferred style for everyday is a shoulder bag with a hobo shape that scoops under the arm nicely. I guess I'm a kind of split personality when it comes to bags.
I also like a small cross-body bag for when I can get by with just carrying a wallet, lipstick, and keys--for a walk or sightseeing, for example. But for me it's too spare an option for daily use.

Big, oversized bags that have handles or short straps are big right now all over Europe. Of course, if you're like me, carrying a bag filled with a bunch of crap can give you a sore shoulder or back, or even chronic pain that requires massages! I have recently opted for a very nice vintage leather backpack style (yet still sophisticated) bag. It doesn't hold very much, though, and looks a bit like something my mother would carry, but hey...it is comfortable at least!

I do have my eye on a couple of great bags online, especially the shoulder bags by Desigual... This brand has so many vibrant designs and colours, and I just LOVE the patchwork styles!

I gave an update up top but here are the photos of the two satchels I tried recently: Botalato by Liebeskind (too boxy) and Cupid by Rebecca Minkoff (pic 2). The Minkoff bag is fairly expensive even at 50% off but does it add some polish and structure that my other bags lack?

I love the second bag. It looks so modern. Love the structure. I don't like the first one much at all--kind of non-descript. Does it fit all of your stuff?

I'm sort of bag-norant too. I like this and feel the color is redundant with the first bag, which like Kelly I'm not loving.

I am biased because I adore Recbecca Minkoff bags! I have a MAB mini in lilac, black slashed leather, forest green and a MAC in plaid and MAC mini in mint green. I have the cupid in sort of an orange basketball colour with some woven accents (below).
You will not be disappointed if you keep that bag. It's a great size and colour,

Nice bag collection. I love the structure and size of the second satchel (the Cupid), but am not so sure about the color since you already have a taupe bag. What about burgundy instead? It would go well with your sweater and I don't think it's redundant with your bright red bag.

Nicole, I have not seen Rebecca Minkoff bags in person before but I definitely like this one. You bag looks great! I also like the look of MAC cross body bags.

Natalie, I was also thinking that a port/burgundy bag would be great. The Cupid mini that you linked to is a bit smaller than the medium sized cupid satchel I got, I am afraid it is going to be too small. There is a medium sized Cupid in this color on Zappos but it costs twice as much. Hmmm...
