SOS: My favourite boots - split zipper?

Has anyone ever had to replace the zipper on a pair of tall leather boots? Mine happened to split today; which is incredibly annoying because we just got 10 cm of snow, so I have wet toes and broken boots!

I am sad because they are my favourite comfy Doc Martens!!! *CRY* and they don't make them anymore so I can't go out and just buy another pair. Even eBay doesn't have any!!!

I don't have any helpful advice but lots of sympathy. I hope they can get fixed and/or a pair in just your size magically pops up on ebay.

DD's liberal arts college is in a ritzy town with only one shoe repair guy who works part time. The first time the zipper broke on her tall boots, it cost something close to $40. At least $30. When the other zipper broke, I contacted Zappos and they replaced the boots since they didn't even last a whole season. I do believe, however, that it was one of those zippers that went from ankle to mid-calf (not 100% sure) vs. the normal style, so maybe the high charge was due to a more difficult zipper style.

This has happened to me and there was no cost-effective fix for my boots. Hope you have better luck - so sad for you.

I've had the zipper base (the fabric the zipper is seated on - I dunno if there is a better name for it?) fall apart on my favourite boots, and I consider myself very lucky that a local cobbler replaces zippers. They are full-length zips, running from the instep all the way up. Having said that - I called about a dozen (!!) cobblers before finding one that would do, and it wasn't cheap; it cost $40 per boot to replace because a) he hates replacing zippers and b) no one else will do it, so he can.

As another option, I often save searches on eBay, so I can be notified when favoured styles pop up. Perhaps you could do that with your boots, if you are unable to find a cobbler?

If the leather is not damaged and the problem is just the zipper it can definitely be replaced. It will be expensive though (but maybe it's just in my area... all the cobblers are so expensive.)
