Some spring WIWs

First post in ages! I spend most of my days in outdoor gear and/or chore-grade clothes, but do manage to put together an outfit from time to time. These are all from April/May. Still quite chilly here; apart from a brief early hot spell, we’ve seen nighttime/early morning temps around freezing, sometimes getting up to 20°C or so on sunny afternoons. Quite a bit of pattern here by my standards, plus texture and layering (cold spring is the season for it).

1. Thrifted Johnson Woolen Mill vest, thrifted Ibex wool hoodie, secondhand Esby jeans, Not Perfect Linen scarf, NB sneakers (ended up switching out the sneakers for Blundstones later in the day due to rain, and threw a big olive rain shell on top. Either way, one of my favorite outfits!)

2. New Alex Mill sweater vest, thrifted Madewell khakis, old Boden striped tee, Feelgrounds sneakers (really enjoying the combo of gum soles and khakis lately)

3. Madewell tiered floral dress that doesn’t get as many outings as it deserves, moto jacket from The Reset, Thursday Boot Co Captain Boots (was honestly a bit chilly despite a merino camisole and some sheer tights; survived a few hours of in-town events but switched into heavy canvas pants and a fleece hoodie once I got home for dog walk and yard work!)

4. Not Perfect Linen scarf and top (received as a trade), Everlane barrel pants, NB sneakers (swapped sneakers for boots and socks later in the day because brrrr). Had a Nanopuff jacket on over this for much of the day.

Still too chilly for sandals or bare limbs; looking forward to ditching some layers soon but making sure to enjoy them while I need them.

LJP said it perfectly! It is lovely to see what you are wearing. These warm tones are beautiful on you. I love the vests, they really make the outfits and are great for adding warmth without excessive bulk. I hope as the weather warms up #3, the dress and leather jacket, get more wear, as it is gorgeous on you.

I'm smiling at the VERY '90s rendition of #3. Hello 1995...... and perfectly on trend

The scarf in #1 and #4 packs lots of punch. Dead right palette and brings out your lovely blue eyes!

I particularly love #4, blue and brown, but all of these are gorgeous and feel so lived-in and one of a kind. Scampering off to my closet to pull my tobacco pants and a chambray top (warmer here!).

It's been a strange year for me. I lost two friends -- one close, one less so -- in March. One right before my 37th birthday and one right after. Both were close to my age. It's been a stark reminder of how temporary it all is, and how unpredictable. Coupled with deepening climate anxiety, it's been a recipe for stepping back from buying and embracing what I already have.

LJP -- It means so much to hear this, thank you. <3

Jaime -- When I was working at three (!!) different schools, thrifting took a backseat, but during the pandemic I cut way back on my classroom obligations, and have finally achieved a work-life balance that allows me to browse thrift stores once again. It's great to get back to a hobby that had taken a backseat for a few years.

Elizabeth P -- Longer hair was one of my pandemic projects! It's been really fun growing it out. I took about an inch off in March, and sometimes contemplate going back to a short style, but am enjoying the wide range of options too much for the time being.

Bijou -- both the dress and the jacket have had another outing since I took the photo. First to kiddo's piano recital, and then to a birthday brunch.

jussie -- thank you! Never expected to move towards warmer colours, but it's happened very intuitively and organically.

Olive Green -- pinterest-worthy is high praise indeed!

kkards -- I've definitely been craving lighter browns to go with all my navy.

CarolS -- I'm so pleased that these come across as authentic to folks!

Bonnie -- thank you. I had a lot of fun wearing both of those.

Jenn -- Thank you! A big part of personal style, for me, is figuring out how I relate to environmental norms, and maintaining my sense of place and community. Every once in a while I feel like I've nailed it.

Angie -- That linen scarf is a spring/fall superhero! The colours and pattern are just right.

Roberta -- I find warm reddish-browns totally irresistible.

Nikki -- Team Vest all the way!

slim cat -- I'm really enjoying both the dress and moto, and I'm going to make an effort to play around with them more over the next couple of weeks while the weather is perfect for them.

Dee -- Texture has been a big focus for me for a while; I'm glad it's working!

Love all of your outfits, but especially #3 at the moment. Curious about your Thursday boots...it looks like they may run wide?

kate, I love my Thursday boots! I find them true to size and wouldn't say they run super wide, but they are roomier than some comparable models. The Christy Dawn lace-up boots were too narrow for me, as were Nisolo's. That said, I log most of my miles in barefoot/minimalist footwear with really wide toeboxes, and at this point I only wear the Thursday boots with tights or my thinnest socks, and typically not on days when I plan to walk a lot. I've actually contemplated purchasing the men's model for extra width.

I can't get over your long hair. Amazing!

Love that scarf in #1 and #4 -- I can see how versatile that would be. Also enjoying the textural mix and sympathizing with the need for a nano puff and layers! Also the desire to push it a little and wear a dress despite the freezing cold! It's hard when things light up to continue in the winter layers, yet if you put them away, you risk freezing your buns off.

Lovely to see you La Ped - that sounds like a challenging year - very hard indeed. I share your climate anxiety - our weather here has been so dangerous and expensive and disruptive and devastating that it is all very real.

You look great - my special favourite is the last one- it's very active and stylish and practical but has the gamine air I love on you.

Suz -- It's heating up now for sure! The weather has done its typical spring 180, and it looks like shorts and sandals are the order of the day now. Always sneaks up on me. I started out with a skirt + tights + boots today (put together a very cute outfit for DS's school's Medieval Festival), and had to switch over to bare legs and sandals by the afternoon.

Runcarla -- Thank you. A hard year for sure, but the bright side is that it's brought a lot of my old friends closer together.

Sal -- Thanks, yes, I think you're absolutely right. Outfits with a little something active/dynamic to them, without being outright sporty, are definitely my happy place.

suntiger -- Those warm/cool contrasts! I love 'em too.

Firecracker -- Thanks! The high bun is remarkably practical, a new discovery for me because my hair never used to be long enough to do it.

missvee -- I'm glad it comes across as cohesive! Shopping mostly secondhand and end of season clearance, it can feel like a bit of a hodgepodge at times, but I've gotten good at saying no to the things I don't absolutely love, and that makes a difference.
