Skorting the issue..(& other things)

It has to be hot for me to wear shorts. And when it’s really hot I don’t want anything really tight. The past few summers have been on the cooler side, but this year....heatwave. It was 90F last weekend & will be 90F most of this week.
So now I’m looking to up my hot weather non work wear.
1st up...skort from athleta. Super comfy.. I’m keeping unless the overwhelming YLF opinion is negative
2nd...shorts, also from athleta. Need/want honest thoughts on the length...too short for Saturday errands? I love the way these fit...but...and I hate that I’m asking this, are they age appropriate? I’m turning 55 next week...and feeling it. When I turned 50 (coincidentally the last time I remember it being 90F on my Bday) I remember also buying shorter shorts...I think to “prove” that I could. So please be honest...I’m really on the fence with these.

I would keep both for this hot summer and see how you feel about wearing them. You will know better after this stretch of hot weather if you will reach for the shorts. They look ok to my eye, especially for the beach or around the house.

I think the shorts look good on you. Maybe even more flattering than the skort because they’re so slimming. I’m not thinking you would need more than a pair for the hottest days, but in this pic I think they work fine.

What are you worried about? You have great legs - go for it! I think they both look great on you . In fact, you've inspired me to put on my skirt today for some running around .

I think the shorts would be great for errands if you paired them with a different top - maybe something woven or something with a short sleeve. In the photo,the shorts with the tank look somewhat like gym wear but that could be the photo. Can't see the fabrication of the top.

what’s running thru my head is my youngest sister, when I turned 50 telling me, about a pair of jcrew 4 inch inseam chino shorts that it was time for me to start dressing my age. So here I am 5 yrs later with another pair short shorts... and I just needed an objective set of eyes.

I like the shorts equally if not better than the skort. They are super flattering and quite modest if you ask me. I'd wear a floaty tank--like something in cotton to dress them up and make the overall vibe less gearish. It would also be cooler but that's just me. YLF!

ETA: I picked up this Gap blouse in the teal color way and have worn it weekly. It was cooler that a cotton tank on the 90+ days because it's so floaty.

You have a great shape, and the shorts are fine! I have a slight preference for the shorts actually. FWIW, I'm a confirmed shorts wearer and equal opportunity inseam (short to long) and 57 YO.

ETA: I work near a Gap outlet and those tops are available in navy and a teal floral. I'm not sure it will last more than a couple seasons but I'm at half a dozen wears/washes already. (I don't dry it--it dries in a flash.)

I think you look fantastic and very age appropriate, but it’s how you feel (not your sister) that should determine if you think these appropriate (I have 3 opinionated younger sisters - I feel ya.)

i gave up Athleta shorts and skorts because I felt them too short for my 5’10” 59 year old body. Not saying anyone else should - just feel the need to be more covered up as the years go by. FYI, i love Duluth Trading skorts - they are super comfy and run a little longer.

You look good in both pieces. I think that the skort outfit is nicely balanced just as it is. I feel like with the shorts, my personal preference would be covered shoulders T-shirt and dark sneakers, just to balance out the look a bit, but it’s already very reasonable looking. Judging by my neighborhood, whether women wear shorts or not seems to have more to do with sun sensitivity or lack thereof, than anything strictly with age.

I think that you can wear both no problem ,you have good legs.I know how you feel though about starting to query whether things are age appropriate but as women I think that we can be too hard on ourselves.If you go on holiday in Southern Europe in the summer when it’s really hot you see all shapes ,sizes and ages wearing whatever and no one bats an eyelid because it’s too hot to care!Maybe we should take a leaf out of their book.

thanks for the the postitive reinforcement...i will try to vanish my sisters voice in my head...or at least think twice about wearing the shorts when i'm with her...will cut the tags and wear tomorrow as its going to be another hot one.

You look amazing. I like the shorts better than the skort actually, more cool and casual. I think you have great legs and you are slim, great figure for shorts. I still own two pairs at 2 y older than you and wear them on very hot days in our summer, blow other people's opinions! Sisters can be very hurtful- my younger sister has hurt me so many times over the years with clothes criticism even if she didn't say anything, the disapproving glances said it all! And I don't like some of her stuff either- I try to compliment as often as possible when I do as our styles are quite different. So unfortunately, quite often I suspect we don't actually like what each other wear. Not much we can do about that.

I think these are more than appropriate but I understand how if you feel less than confident, you won't ever be comfortable in them and they will orphan. I am 63 and my beef with almost all brands is "why are shorts and skorts so short?" I want a 19- to 20-inch skirt, not 17- or 18-inches. Athleta had a great swing skort a couple years ago that I purchased in "tall" to get the longer skirt. I love these skorts and wear them constantly. Of course, they no longer make them and they sold out almost instantly, which one would think might give them the hint that these were popular. The on-line comments often said, "I love these and purchased in talls so they would be longer." Why retailers think everyone wants short-short-short shorts and sleeveless tops escapes me.

Nebraskim--i thought a lot about these shorts and making sure they wouldn't be orphans....my plan was to post here because i eally like the way these shorts fit...so as long as there weren't negative response here among the people whose fashion, style and advice i really admire, then i feel that i'm going to be empowered to wear them...
Re the skorts---don't know if you've visited the Athleta site recently, but i saw quite a few styles/colors available in tall. --this find has an 18.5inch inseasm

I’m 5’4” but with a shorter torso compared to my legs so I often get a tall in Athleta items just for that extra inch or two.

Let's get real. There is no expiration date, and I'm sick of magazines telling me I can't wear something because I'm past a certain age. I think both options look good on you; they're weather appropriate, they're not immodest at all, and if they're physically/emotionally comfortable then who cares what some magazine editor says is age appropriate? Nice job finding cute things to wear when the weather is miserable
