Surprisingly, after smiling over bright outfit after bright outfit on my favorites of 2012 roundup post, the first outfit I chose to put on was much more monochromatic. And unusually for me, it involved a fair bit of sparkle, too. I'm not usually a member of Team Magpie, but I dabbled with shimmer today:

Pewter cowl-neck knit top
Gray and white abstract scribble-patterned cardigan
Charcoal pencil skirt
Silver low-heeled penny loafers
Silver owl necklace, a Christmas gift from B.

I realize that this outfit probably would have looked more alluring if I'd paired it with heels instead; I think I might wear this to work with my burgundy patent pumps next time. But this suited me just fine for a day of errands today.

Bonus shot: After YEARS of drooling over them, I finally decided to spend some Nordstrom Notes towards the Haflinger "Doggy" Slippers since my old pair of house slippers are showing their wear and tear. I don't regret it one bit! My feet are oh-so-cozy, and I smile every time I look down at my feet.

There must not be a color in the universe that you can't wear! You look lovely in silver and grey. The slippers are adorable.

Nicole, sometimes when I feel like all I want to do is stay in sweats and curl up in a blanket on the couch but I HAVE to get out to run errands, I feel slightly more motivated to do so if I'm dressed in something fun. Does that make sense? Helps to get me out the door to work, too.

Make me smile! Gorgeous from head to toe and you shimmer in silver. Oh, I love the owl necklace and B is a very wise shopper. Such cute metallic loafers/flats for your day's activities and I think your burgundy choice is an excellent work alternative with these colors.

Now, those slippers! Yikes, do I love them and I'm afraid to ask if they had any kitty ones, because I'd scamper over and get myself a pair. So cute, Kari.

Vicki, they do and the kitty slippers are DARLING. They aren't cheap, though, which is why I waited 3 years before I got them!

Oh right, back to your outfit...love this monochromatic look on you just as much as I love all the colour. Lucky you can wear both beautifully! I think the outfit looks fab with the flats but you're right that your burgundy pumps would be great for work with this.

Shannon - it's MAC lipstick in "Ladybug". My favorite red!

Thanks Kari - I have the MAC lipstick is Brave Red and love it. This would be another shade - can never have too many reds IMO!

Oooh, I think that Brave Red may have been my close second when I was testing out lipstick shades at the MAC counter.

I NEVER wore red lipstick before this (I think I picked it up a year and a half ago?) The thing I love about MAC lipsticks is that the same shade looks very different, but still beautiful, with a light layer over chapstick or with a heavy matte lip. Very versatile!

Any time you see me with a red lip in a photo, Ladybug is what I have on. My only other shade, which is a much more natural pink, is Dior's Backstage.

Totally agree! I love my Body Shop lipsticks for their moisturizing properties but when I'm wanting a strong looking lip with fab colour choices, I turn to MAC.

Grey is one of my favourite colours and you've put it together in a way this is so interesting. The variety of pattern, sheen and shape adds great visual interest. You look just lovely! Adorable slippers too!

Kari: I think your coloring is a real asset -- your healthy skin and vibrant hair shine in neutrals, too. Again, you're pairing a big impact look -- harmonious, but strong, with little details (the owl necklace is fab). And, much as I like heels, the loafers are an excellent choice for running errands!

I think you don't need color when you have so much interesting eye candy in the way of texture, pattern and shine. I love this outfit and I can't live without color I think it's a very cute but practical errand running outfit. Look fabulous for you as well as when you go to work.

You're gorgeous as the lady in grey! This is a lesson in doing monochrome with attitude, with colour variations, shimmer and shine, texture (from the draping of the top) and pattern.

Personally, I'm not sure the burgundy pumps would look 'better' so much as 'dressier' --- I really enjoy the practicality and sheen of the loafers here.

And the slippers are deliciously ADORABLE! I'm so lucky they are nowhere near my time zone
