show me your converse outfits

I bought a pair of green converse this week and can't decide whether or not to keep them. I know that you all will be able to help me out by showing me how you style them.

Or, can you offer me an alternative for a closed shoe that isn't a ballet flat (they just don't work on my feet) or a boot for a very casual day? I have my 2 tone oxfords, but I want a more casual laid back alternative.

I don't wear my red ones very often, but here is the outfit I ended up with when I asked about them some months ago. This is casual, but I think it works because the button down keeps me from feeling too sporty.

Filling this need alluded me all last year. Here's the scenario... Saturday afternoon, I'm hanging around in bootcut jeans and a simple top. Need to go run an errand or 2. I throw on a jacket to pull things together but then am stumped at shoes. It seemed that my only option was my short boots,which were just more than I really wanted at times, especially if it was a day on the warmer side. WHAT do I put on my feet in times like this????

I love my Converse--they've become my new favorite MOTG shoe! I have two Converse in red and yellow and a pair of Kate Spade Tretorns in Japanese floral. I usually wear them with jeans but sometimes even with dresses and capri leggings.

I have had similar dilemmas and usually just put on flats. But this year I'm prepared! I just ordered these in the calf hair leopard print: http://www.aerosoles.com/eng/product/nu_day/nu-day

I also bought a pair of Frye brown oxfords and ordered the Naya lace-ups you linked to in black.

Keep posting outfits people! I like to see them, too. I have a pair of leather Ash high-tops that I never wear because I think the white toe-cap is so visually prominent; it bothers me. Seeing these Converse outfits helps adjust my eye.

That's the problem Anne.. I don't have any 'just flats" My winter shoe collection consists of...

cognac boots
black engineer boots
taupe short boots
heeled booties (grey)
black/white oxfords
black heeled booties
red/black dressy heels

So as you can see, I'm in dire need of something casual, simple and flat. Ballet flats are out. I do like some of the loafers you just linked to.

QM - so nice to see you posting again!

I'm not very good at taking pics of my casual outfits. Here's the only one I have with my cons and it's not a great one. But the scenario you are describing is exactly when I pull them out.

As far as alternatives, I'm looking for some other solutions also. I have these in my wish list, but haven't pulled the trigger yet:

These aren't anywhere near Cons, but they were my solution to the exact scenario you described. I used to throw on some blue suede mule/clogs that were decidedly unfab and knew they needed an upgrade. I decided on these because they could both fit under bootcuts or tuck skinnies into.

Green converse? My son wore them to his wedding with a cream coloured tux. His bride insisted, seeing as he was known for his converse. She wore green ballet flats to balance him out.

What? Not the look you were thinking of? Sheesh, a girl tries to be helpful...

QM, how about the "smoking slipper" for a bit more updated flat, instead of ballet flats? (I know what you mean about them. I like them on others and they are a classic, but they just don't scream "ME" when I put them on myself. I'm not sure why, but there you go!)

I *love* this style, and my preference is towards the lower vamped ones, I'm all over it this year when I can get to the States and get some serious discount shoe shopping done!

JR - my husband was in a wedding party (oh, so many years ago) where the groom and all the groomsmen wore red converse. He still has the red converse, but more as a souvenir of a wonderful memory, I think. I have never seen him wear 'em.

And thanks for the great suggestions everyone. I need to put together a few outfits this week and let you all help me decide if they are right for me. I love the idea of them, I just want to make sure I pull them off okay.

I do have Cons in a charcoal color, but I really only wear them for extremely casual activities, usually with bootcut jeans or with clamdigger shorts.

My other thought would be to look at these NAS Sofft "sneakers" http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/so.....sultback=0 I saw them in the store in the Anthracite color and thought they were much prettier than they look on the website. (They are on their way to me right now, so I can let you know how they look/feel when they arrive.)

I have some metallic loafers by BC (last year so cannot find a link). I think the metallic topsiders are good too, but Cons are classics (and there are so many styles and colors, but they really have zero support). I have a Cole Haan version in cream leather. I also have these Tom's knockoffs (but with cushy support) in gold metallic:

Somewhere on the blog is a MOTG post featuring me wearing cons. I have to be honest: I rarely wear the cons. Just too casual for me, I feel like a teenager wearing them.

I know you said no ballet flats but I'd like to recommend you give these a try:

Yes, they are outrageously expensive, but worth every penny. I have never had a more comfortable shoe. No blistering, no rubbing, and there is comfy cushioning. I tried these on in the store over a year ago, when they first came out. I balked at the price and waited for a sale. Finally bit the bullet this spring and paid full price since I never saw them come on sale. I love SW brand as they are very well made and hold up to lots of abuse.

April- I had actually seen those Borns yesterday and put them on my wish list for consideration.
Jeanne- those Toms knockoffs are cute too. If I could find something like those in a fun color that might work too.

Shiny- So good to see you back on the forum! I think you were one of the first ones' to welcome me when I arrived here a few years ago! I really am hesitant to try another pair of ballet flats. I have yet to find a pair that works. I found a pair last year that didn't dig into my bunion, but something about the flatness and the shape made them uncomfortable even just to really stand in, if that makes any sense. I think I need more shoe on top of my foot or something.

For those who do wear converse, do you wear socks with them?

I can't remember what I did in the winter, although I must have worn socks. In the summer I haven't been wearing them (with shorts, etc).

I wear no-show peds with mine when wearing shorts or crops. If I'm wearing full length jeans then I do wear a sock with them.

My laptop is in for repairs so I don't have any pics, sorry! I have grey Cons and I rarely wear mine. They look goofy with my skinny jeans (probably due to the size of my feet more than anything). I just got a pair of bootcut jeans so we'll see if I wear them more this fall/winter.

The only thing that's a pain is that you can't just "slip them on and go". They have to be tied, which slows you down a bit. I like the slipper flats and loafers that people have been linking to here. They might be a good, casual alternative.

I generally wear socks with my cons, but that's mostly because my feet sweat and not very comfortable without socks. I'm on Team Socks (unless I'm in sandals).

QM, I have given up wearing bootcuts in the summer for this reason (lack of suitable footwear). I stick to straightlegs on days where it's actually cool enough to wear long pants, and pair them with sandals. I do have a pair of black and white Cons, but it's not my favorite look. (I also don't find them that comfortable...guess I need to track down a gel insert of some kind.)

I don't have photos, but I do wear my charcoal grey cons with bootcut or straight leg jeans quite often. I don't wear them with skinnies as it looks a bit young to my eye. I have also worn them with wide leg pants - jeans and microchecks.

Are microchecks still in, I wonder? I haven't worn mine for awhile...

No photos but I always wear socks with my Cons. I wear the very low ankle socks since it's the only types of socks I like. I have grey cons and sometimes wear them with bootcut jeans but when I don't want to look like a teenager I wear them with leggings and and a slightly voluminous top. I've also worn them with shorter dresses to give me a more casual vibe.

ETA: I can't do ballet flats that often even though I like how they look on others. I tend to feel a little too precious and not very ME. I have one pair of black ballet flats that I used to wear at work when I worked in an office but I haven't pulled them out once since then.

I'll have to rummage around for pics, but to answer some of your other questions: I wear low socks with my Cons. I really like the look of a slipper flat, and Alterations Needed had some fun photos of her Gap ones (http://www.alterationsneeded.c.....afers.html). Two other casual shoes that crossed my path as Converse alternatives are Onitsuka Tiger's "Mexico 66" or "Tai Chi" -- I just love the history behind those shoes. The "Tai Chi" particularly tickles me; when else do you get to wear the brand that Bruce Lee made famous?
