A lot of work boots? Payless is closing all their stores, including the online one. Honestly, they sold the best shoes for the bakery I ever found. Waterproof too. I’m very sad

Rachy - I am sad for you and yes to stocking up on these. Finding footwear that is comfortable for a job like working in a bakery is likely to be hard and you are not likely to be wanting to make a fashion statement - so I don't think it is likely you will get sick of the style. However I would be unlikely to get more than what you need for the next 18 months as feet can change and get fussy... so only a couple of pairs is my recommendation.

Ok. Then I’m going to get at least two pairs, maybe at least three. I’ve been wearing them for rainy night dog walks too.

It’s really sad to me another brick and mortar store is going down. Now there are NO shoe stores near me, except for the funky-shoe shop. But nowhere for sneakers or other practical shoes. I’ll have to take a TRAIN to go shopping.

Yes great to get some. Now isn't this odd, I remember only a few months back Payless did that weird thing with the "influencers" where they pretended they were making high-end designer shoes? Do you think that stunt backfired on them? Or was that stunt an attempt to shore up an already- failing brand?
I agree with you it is sad to see the demise of B&M stores. But in NZ the recent ones that have failed just charged too much in my view for what the stuff was- you're making in China but you want how much for it? The shoe store was a bit different- it was a high-end one of about 30-40 years that imported from Europe but the owner was older and I think he had too much competition in recent years from newer more styly brands also doing that. I think he catered too much to the older elegant woman- who are a disappearing breed. I think they were mostly non-working wives who did charity work and lunched!

Jenni, I remember that stunt. I do think it was a last ditch effort... or more likely, the market arm continuing to soldier on a little in the dark. Corporate seems to have pulled the plug, and totally, without a lot of dithering. But they were already in bankruptcy.

It’s interesting, I wonder if Amazon is killing the importance of branding. I mean, I suppose I went to Payless because Payless meant shoes to me. That and I lived within walking distance of one once upon a time, and it was in the same place as a Pet Express.

If you liked them, then yes, buy a 2-3 pairs before they close.

Jenni NZ: I remember that stunt! I think it their marketing trying to shore up a failing company and make it attractive to buyers. But seems there were no takers?

Honestly, I don't / won't miss Payless. I just never liked plastic shoes unless they're fip-flops. And as I got older, it become more important to wear good fitting leather shoes and sandals. But I'm sure for parents with growing kids, Payless was great. Vegans too.

Gosh! What happened? That is where I got my silver Converse sneakers! What do you wear at the bakery, RL? DS#2 who works as a mixer (cakes!). wears workboots. The boot truck comes 'round and the company kits up eligible workers. He just got a new pair yesterday!

Stock up if your preferred footwear is hard to come by.

I wear workboots in winter, sneakers or clogs in summer. I tried Shoes for Crews through the bakery but they were expensive still even with the bakery paying half, not that comfortable and wore out in less than a month. Maybe I just picked the wrong style, but didn’t feel like it was worth the trouble to try again.

Rachy, it looks like Amazon sells the Antero safeTstep boot too, so at least you'll have a secondary source for your workplace footwear. Amazon's price is $49.99; don't know how that stacks up against Payless, but I agree re stocking up.
