Should I go back for this?

I took a quick cruise through a boutique yesterday where I have found some nice items in recent years. Almost nothing appealed to me — this year continues to offer little that works for my style. Everything was smocked, spaghetti strapped, or short. Either shapeless or bodycon, almost nothing with a bit of structure.

This top was an exception. I like that the sleeves are more architectural/sculptural than puffy. And the color palette works for me — the blue would work nicely with denim. I was in a hurry and not sure of it, so left it behind.

I wonder how the sleeves would fare after laundering. Didn’t have a chance to look at fabric content or care instructions — as a summer piece I’d want it to be easy care. It felt like cotton.

The sleeves button at the bottom — and that is a little tight on my big arms but I can unbutton or move the button over. I love the collar style and the cropped length is perfect for me.

What does the YLF hive mind think? Worth returning for?

I'd go back, at least to check care/laundering, and perhaps bring a couple bottoms that you might pair with it. The neckline is perfect on you, though I'm not sure about the sleeves. They look a bit wide, but might balance perfectly depending on the bottoms you choose and footwear.

Thanks, Khris and Kathie! I think it may be worth a second look. I don’t mind some shoulder emphasis — I like that it minimizes my bust and can make my hips look smaller in comparison, LOL. As long as it doesn’t emphasize how small my head is — that can be a drawback of an exaggerated shoulder for me.

It is worth a second look, especially if you are still thinking about it. Will the sleeves need to be ironed? That can be difficult with big sleeves.

Looks great on you, Janet. It definitely has a contemporary shape and would work beautifully with your wardrobe.

If it is cotton or a cotton mix fabric then it can be washed and dried on a hanger to avoid ironing.

It's an interesting piece and the print is wonderful ( tired of sweet floral or cottage core inspired tops ) - go back to try it again.

I say grab the cropped length tops while they are out there! It’s an interesting pattern and eye catching sleeves.

I like the top but worry it may be tricky to style. I can see it with full length wide leg jeans in blue or white but I'm struggling to picture anything further which gives me pause.

Ooo,this is a very interesting top isn’t it.l can see the appeal.l d ont think it worked with the bottoms you had on so l agree that you should go back with the bottoms you think might work and try it again.l would go for something that balanced out the wide shoulders on the bottom then l think it could be very flattering and make your waist look smaller.

yes! I bought a dress with sleeves like this in a whim and I love it. It might not have a lot of longevity but it’s fun and perfect for transitional weather (at least when I don’t need or want a light topper.) it’s super cute on you!

It looks like I am in the minority, but I don’t think the shoulder volume is very flattering. The fabric is a bit crisp.

I’d have to see it styled with the bottoms you’d wear, but I do think it has potential. BTW, I don’t think you have a small head!

I find it sometimes helpful to have that “it wasn’t meant to be” mentality about things I have quite liked but have not been totally sure of. It helps me to feel as if the universe is involved somehow!
I do find the shoulders very obvious on you giving an almost IT look which I have never noticed on you before? (Not sure what you think your body shape is, will have to check your profile). So personally I am not so excited about this top but like cat2 am in a minority.

I like the look of this top, but the fabric looks like it would need ironing and
I would not be sure how to iron the pleated sleeve. If the fabric is viscose, I would leave it, as it will only look good if dry cleaned and professionally pressed. As someone with bigger hips, I like how a puff sleeve (this is an architectural puff) visually slims down my bottom half and makes my waist look smaller.

I love the sleeves! If they are really well designed the architecture is made of folds that should hold up through laundering - definitely worth a second look.

I like this on you, it would be especially good with denim I think. I do like puffed sleeves to balance my hips. I think this is a fun mix up if you want a new shape of top.

If you need to press the sleeve, roll up a bath towel and slide the sleeve over that, you can then manipulate the pleats / tucks quite easily to press with the point of the iron. HTH. Best wishes to all.

I forgot to ask if you like the 1/2 sleeve length? I find it an odd length, either going for 3/4, full length or short sleeve or sleeveless. I think 3/4 is my favorite.

Lana, I’m kind of neutral on this sleeve length — I neither seek it out or avoid it. I kind of like the coverage on my arms but hate tight buttons on sleeves because my upper arms are not toned or attractive. Oddly enough I think sometimes sleeveless calls less attention to them than short sleeves, maybe because the emphasis is more on the shoulder.

I’m not crazy about 3/4 sleeves unless they are on a very lightweight woven top that’s definitely only for summer wear and doesn’t get layered over. Fitted 3/4 sleeves feel awkward to me.

I’m not feeling motivated enough to make a trip and return to the store today so I may not be as enamored as I should be. I’ve acquired a decent little collection of summer tops between last summer and this spring (finds below show most of them, plus I have some older ones that are still ok) so maybe it’s just as well.

I notice in your short sleeve tops they have a diagonal looser sleeve. So much more flattering than a tight horizontal to me. I think that’s part of the reason why I like to wear a third piece over graphic tees.

I love the print - great geometric instead of a floral- but in this photo I think the exaggerated shoulder is a bit much. That’s just according to how I “ see” you and I have same reaction to some others things that fabbers like on themselves so of course don’t want to keep anyone in a fashion box from which they cannot explore new things. I could see this top more balanced with a skirt.
I am also leery of fabric contents when I look at woven pieces— since many are treated with sizing and pressed for retail and so may never have same crispness unless fully ironed. So the cotton drip- dry may work best with more casual pieces, or I’d also risk having to professionally clean/ iron for something that is a HEWI or occasion- maker and will iron up easily AND will not become terribly re- wrinkled with how I’d wear it.
But often you can’t really tell until putting it through it’s paces. So basically it always drives me crazy deciding whether to try some things.

Not sure. My first reaction was a resounding yesss! But looking again, I think it’s wearing you. The sleeves are great and I love the print, but the overall effect is somewhat overwhelming. I think it will be hard to match.

I think I’m with approprio, the combo of print and shape is iffy for me. I would love the architectural sleeve in black for you but in combination with the print I’m a bit meh. That said I think it’s partially the lack of styling, I bet you could figure it out. Would it be a piece with longevity? Not so sure.
