Shorts & New Boho Blouse - K/R?

I just found this top and am unsure about keeping it. I’ve been looking for a bell sleeve top in a very drapey fabric so the sleeves lie relatively flat, and I really like the red, blush, and black color. It’s a cotton/modal blend. I've been wanting to wear shorts in more polished outfits and this would do that. I’m on the fence about it for some reason and don’t know exactly why. The only find I located is a lighter color than the one I brought home.. Shorts are Liz Claiborne from a few years ago. I’m also not sure I like these sandals with it. I might like the gold ones better. (see finds), or sandals in a nude color, which I do not own.

Well, am not going to be of much help since I like both the top and the sandals. Lighter sandals would also work nicely, to bookend your hair. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

I think the top is perfect. I would keep and wear with the shorts. I like the shoes you have on but think the others would work also.

Get nude or gold sandals. Your black ones are classic to my eye and would be fab with dark crops. I like the top on you although not a fan of that type of floral, just a personal bias. What is most important is how you like it and your happiness factor wearing it.

I think the blouse and the black sandals look fine on you, and I imagine they would also look great with a skirt or crops. The other sandals will be fine, too.

Joy I think you are right that these sandals work better with slightly longer pants...they seem too harsh with shorts..too much contrast... and lighter ones would be better. What one likes in floral prints really is personal, isn't it?

Yes black shoes are difficult with shorts, I also prefer wearing less contrasting shoes.

Chris, I like the top for you. Its depth makes it somewhat tonal with black shorts (which fit your legs nicely, btw). Yes, gold or more neutral sandals would lengthen your leg line, but my eye has adjusted to everyone's dark shoes these days, especially with a lot of skin showing. I think you are doing a great job of learning to dress your body!

I did want to add that to my eye the length of the top is just right for the shorts. I think that is the trickiest part of this look, so "yay" for you!

Jill58 the sandals ARE super comfortable. And rather stylish for the Clark Brand IMHO. The straps are very soft lovely leather. I bought them last year from Nordstrom but just found that 6pm.com is selling them now and maybe they are available at other places. See find below

Love the top. Keep! I like the sandals but in this particular outfit I think gold sandals would add more of a wow factor.

I'm curious if your hesitation about the outfit might change if you try the top and shorts with the metallic (or other lighter neutral) sandal. I think the top looks great, and is nicely paired with your shorts, but your feeling about the outfit might be a stronger positive one if you see it with a lighter shoe. I really like the gold Macy's sandal in your finds link!

I love the blouse Chris, and I like the black sandals. I have a hesitation about those sandals with this particular outfit and I think it is the ankle strap not the colour. If you look at your photo straight on, there are many strong horizontal lines- the bottom of the top, the edge of the shorts, and then several horizontal lines of the sandals. I don't have a proper fashion term for describing what I mean, but when choosing some of my own shoes I don't like to do what I call "cut off my legs", which I think these do. Perhaps I mean that it is the opposite of lengthening the leg line. Angie might possibly weigh in on what I am trying ( badly) to express. I think there could be other configurations of straps that could flatter feet and legs more.

Brooklyn and Laurie I think you are right about lighter sandals.

Jenni NZ I think you explained the horizontal line thing EXTREMELY WELL! I generally prefer low contrast tops/bottoms because on my body shape a strong high contrast horizontal line across the hip area can be super unflattering. This top and bottom are relatively low contrast, but as you point out, my legs showing adds a LOT of contrast at the bottom of the shorts and the sandals have a lot of vertical lines at the ankle. So these sandals would be better with longer pants where the vertical line is further down the leg, like cropped or ankle length pants instead of shorts. What a great observation! ...something for me to experiment with in terms or proportion. And yes lighter sandals seem the way to go with shorts for all the reasons listed above. For someone taller the leg shortening effect of dark sandals is not so strong, for someone with dark hair the dark sandals would have a bookend effect, etc....but I am neither. Thanks for taking the time to analyze and write this!

I think the top and shorts look lovely on you. The colour of the top is a good one for you. A lighter colour sandal might work too. I wonder if the black and strappy sandal is a bit heavy for the floaty blouse.

Thanks Chris. I think our body shapes are similar. I might now manage to call the effect "leg shortening" rather than "cut off my legs" I once said that in a shoe shop "But I'm worried they cut off my legs" and the SA asked whatever did I mean! As I am short it is a significant issue to me.

Think this works heat to toe as it is-surely can work with other shoe options, but I actually think the dark sandals give this a good color and contrast balance on your fair self.
