I actually rather like these sandals here. Not cheap, but in a wide fit and they recommend sizing down if you're between sizes so they might just work out.

Hm, I see the problem. You'd need to find the right top, which could be just as hard as shoes. I was thinking a plain and simple crepe de chine tee in black or navy. Am I right in thinking the skirt has a bit of sparkle?

Yes, I agree. No it hasn't, it's just patterned. The fabric is nice because it's floaty (wool and silk mix) but it's definitely flat. Now I do think Gaylene is right and it wouldn't be dressy enough after all.

And I just realized that while I really like the sandals above I would like my dressy shoes to be closed so I can wear them barefoot in summer and with hose in winter. So if I buy dressy shoes, then no sandals.

I like those sandals, but, more importantly, you are drawn to them, so I think you ought to try them. I can see them with the borrowed navy dress because navy and black is a sophisticated combination. It might not be the outfit of your dreams, but it is a perfectly adequate fallback.

But, to my mind, here is where the fun starts. What would YOU put with those shoes for a dressy event? A long velvet skirt with an leather-trimmed top? A mid-length swishy silk skirt with an interesting banded top? If you can start thinking of possibilities that could work with these shoes, then those shoes could be the start of something. Once you have some images and silhouettes in mind, you are in a better position to look for YOUR items knowing you have the shoes waiting for their companion pieces. And, in the interval, you can also start figuring out how to use the shoes to turn some of your current pieces into dressy-casual outfits.

ETA: i just saw your thoughts about preferring a closed shoe. Perfect. Try the sandals anyway while checking out closed options. Think of those potential outfits. Would your oxfords with ribbon ties work with a velvet skirt and leather-trimmed top? How would the interesting banded top look with one of your summer skirts and the sandals? I guess my point is that the sandals can still be a smart buy if they work with other pieces in your current wardrobe and you have a possible closed shoe or boot that would work with your dressy capsule in fall and winter.

You may have good luck finding a long skirt on eBay or thrifting or a clearance rack. I have picked up a couple of black ones for just-in-case in velvet and in a light weight wool. If you are wearing some of the jewelry, a very simple dark top would work. Shoes with a long dress or skirt are usually not very noticeable. With your beautiful hair and smile, no one will be looking closely at your feet.

Thanks Mander! Those Josef Seibel links don't work for me, they just take me to the main page. Must be an IP issue.

Gaylene, I like how you're thinking. I'm not ordering the sandals however - they're still 70€ plus shipping costs plus potential return costs and I don't want to be tempted to keep them. I guess I can understand the argument of wearing the sandals with my more casual things, but fact is that we haven't had a lot of sandal weather over the past few years. I just don't think they would get enough wear to justify the price right now, with my budget.

Joy, thanks! Yes I will probably wear some of their jewelry, but I won't know until the day what range of stuff my friend will have with her. So I can't plan that. Last time I wore rather small and simple pieces, anything else wouldn't have worked with my outfit. I agree that a long skirt hides the shoes, last time they weren't very noticeable either.

Back to the dress, I think it has an appealing Audrey Hepburn vibe with that ballet neckline. Have you considered a ballet wedge shoe?

Enjoy the gala, it sounds wonderful!

I just looked at the earlier post, having missed it before, and I must say that the outfit you put together last time was inspired. You looked adorable, and I love your curls! Your sister's dress is classically pretty and should do very nicely for you this time. As for shoes, the fact that this is a Summer event makes sandals the obvious choice to me. And you're in luck with so many fashionable lower-heeled strappy styles out there. I wouldn't go too flat, but an inch or two can still make for a comfortably dressy shoe, and if it's real leather, the straps should stretch to accommodate a wider foot. Have a wonderful time!

Sandy, thanks! Not sure I want heels, even if they're wedges. Also ballet flat styles are tricky...

Tulle, thanks! It's not just a case of getting straps to stretch a bit with sandals for me - I wear a 37.5 and with a lot of brands I'd really need the width of a size 39. I wear a normal width (not narrow) in Birkenstocks and they're just wide enough.

And I have found a dress on Ebay that I really like - graphit colored silk. It would be knee length on me. I'm really considering it, it could be my LGD. Not really less dressy than the first one, but much more my thing. What do you think?

I think that dress is gorgeous, but you're now spending money on a dress that you really don't need, and still need shoes. Not sure you're further ahead!

Thanks Elizabeth. Yes, it sounds ridiculous right? Although I think this one would be wearable on different occasions: theatre, Christmas, maybe even on special occasion days. Since it's silk it doesn't read "evening dress only" to me. Also I could maybe see myself pairing my old black oxfords with it - I wanted to ask a local cobbler if it's possible to fix them up and how much it be anyway.

No, not ridiculous... I know how it is when you start thinking "dressy capsule" and all of a sudden a new door opens... Just trying to keep you focused! I can see this dress being more versatile, for you, for sure,

Thanks Elizabeth - you're right.

Gaah, I even went to the EU version of the website! But now when I click on it all I get is the homepage. I hate that.

Anyway the ones I was looking at are all around 80 Euros, which would be way too much for my budget but could be worth it, perhaps. The styles are called:

- Kira 09 (black sandal with cork sole, a bit of a wedge/platform)
- Mokassetta 287 (black cage style sandal, bit of a heel)
- Fiona 04 (black flat with laces on top, very much like those Irish dancing shoes! but 99 Euros!)

Thanks Mander! I would buy shoes for that price, if they were the right ones and comfortable. I always have very few shoes but try to get quality. I went on the Josef Seibel website for Germany, but I found only the Fiona - the other two don't seem to be available here.

Just got the measurements for the dress and it sounds like it would be a perfect fit... mmh.

Dilemmas!!!

I think both your sisters dress and the new dress are very pretty. I have been in similar situations in the past and I have tended to make do.. It sounds like you are an easier fit for clothing then shoes ( I am the opposite).

It often does come together quite quickly, I have borrowed dresses or jewelry or even shoes from friends at times due to budget, or travel or even time,. If my outfit is not my perfect one I make sure I love my hair and makeup!!

Ooh, could be a winner! I forgot to say earlier that I really like that silk dress on eBay.

That dress you posted, the second one, is so beautiful. If it comes down to dress vs. Shoes, I'd be looking to purchase some black flip flops at the dollar store to snap up that dress.

Thanks Kiwigal, Mander and Smittie - I did buy the dress!!! I just couldn't resist. And the price wasn't over the top. Keep you're fingers crossed that it fits just like I think it will. Smittie, no flip flops needed, I think I'm going to wear my taupe Oxfords if I don't find the right shoe in time and will invest in some fancy laces, like Approprio suggested. I think it would work with this dress.

Well done! That dress looks absolutely perfect. Crossing fingers that it works out for you.

Thanks Approprio.

Sweet! Excited for you!

I like that dress because you can style it in so many different ways. It has aspects that could go a little bit boho, or feminine, or elegant, etc, depending on what you wear with it.

I love the eBay dress. Much more sophisticated IMO. I picture it with some pointed toe ankle strap flats, or delicate oxfords.

Oh, yes, now THAT is an Astrid dress! Crossing my fingers it works out since it's exactly the kind of dress on which you could build a small, but very functional, dressy capsule.

That dress does look more like you, and a very useful, dress-up-or-down type of thing to have in your wardrobe. Is it possible that a pair of flats you might already have would work with it? Metallic silver or pewter would be beautiful. And if not, have you learned from experience that certain brands tend always to fit your feet? (My husband has very wide feet, too, and has stopped buying from all but 3 companies, because only those fit reliably.) If so, I would just look at their sites, and pick whatever suits the dress best for formal wear. Then you'll have your dressy "uniform" waiting in your closet, ready to be worn with different accessories for many occasions. On the other hand, it's not always a bad thing to dress outside your usual style for a special event, and it's possible that borrowing your sister's dress might give you an unexpected lift. So I'd say, buy the LGD, keep it for its beauty & practicality, but try the black one on again before you decide what to wear that night!
One last thought: I have the opposite fitting problem (narrow feet) and have found that shoes & sandals with multiple buckled straps can be very helpful: I just make extra holes in the straps to tighten the fit. Have you tried punching extra holes to loosen straps, or are most straps just too short?
