I had to stop coloring my hair about a year ago due to increasing issues with allergic contact dermatitis. Apparently it's impossible to make hair dye without fragrance and other things I can't tolerate. So it wasn't really a choice, but I was also kind of considering stopping the color anyway.
I only ever used semi-permanent, so I didn't have to go through that long grow out phase or do a super-chop, it just faded out and has been gone for at least half a year. That part was easy. And at first the grey was easy too. I didn't mind it and kind of even liked it...but that was when I was about 20% grey. Now the grey is longer and more is coming in...I'd say I'm about 30% grey and 70% brown now. I'm 66 so this is only going in one direction.
I have always like the look of grey mixed with dark hair when it hits half and half or more and looks kind of pewter. My mother had that and I was hoping mine would be. But part of the change has also been that my brown is lighter than it used to be, or lighter than I was coloring it anyway. More of a medium brown instead of dark brown. And medium brown mixed with grey = kind of mousey. That was even my hairdresser's term so it's not just me being hard on myself.
So, all that preamble for a question: If you've gone grey and stayed the course, (since I have no choice about that!), can you share your experience and steps along the way? Was there a point where you doubted you'd ever like it? And did you like it better as it tipped towards more grey than original? That's what I'm hoping...that the mousey look will actually lessen when it tips to half and half or more.
