Seeing yourself on your Ring camera

Ever look at yourself as recorded in your own Ring camera? And did you decide, as you watched your image move around, unconcerned, that you didn't like your dress?

Two years ago I bought this Boden dress and wore it a lot. It has a self-fabric belt that you can't see well. It's always bothered me a bit because Boden dresses are a bit short waisted for me and ride up. Today I wore it but it was really bothering me--every time I raise my arms it rides up. Nice fabric, pockets, and fits fine.

I thought about just cutting off the bottom and making a skirt out of it.

Then I looked at the front door video of myself moving around, watering some plants. Ugh, I don't like the length on my legs and it just seems to hang unattractively. Well, I could shorten the skirt . . . but that's going to mean a lot of sewing for me--by hand, or wait for the local shop where I get alterations gets going again.

Anyone ever had this happen? Change your mind when you see an unposed photo?

Since I don't have a defined waist - I usually tie the sash/soft belt on the back ( slightly loose ). That way it gives my body some shape without having to deal with belt sitting in uncomfortable position .
The dress looks very nice on you - I like the length, the slit and the neckline. The sandals are perfect match in color and casual vibe.
I hope you'll find a way to keep wearing that dress or modify it into skirt
( should be lovely too ).
P.S. I hate seeing myself on video - awkward and such...

I wouldn't be too jarred by a random photo image - the camera does, in fact, "lie".

If I went by all my candid shots I would not have any clothes left. You look great and I am sure you look much better than what you "saw" on film.

I agree with Shevia. I am quite frequently a bit horrified by my photos and lately how I look on Zoom on the iPhone. But then I try to remember that I’m always hard on myself, yada yada yada, and after all I am well into middle age, nearly 60, and so what I look it!
I think you look great in this dress and it would be a shame to ditch it.

Well, I think it's a fab dress and I liked it from the first time I saw you in it. Agreeing with the others on candid shots. Sometimes I hardly recognize myself.

Ms Maven, please don’t be hard on yourself. You are beautiful and I like this dress on you. The length is flattering and gives you a long leg line. However, if you are not enjoying wearing this, pass it on. You have lots of beautiful clothes and accessories to enjoy and there is no point keeping something that you no longer like.

For work, I sometimes have to do training videos. I cringe when I see them. Is that how I really sound and look? Which alas the answer is both yes and no. Yes, that is how I looked and sounded then, but the mere fact that I am presenting and being filmed, means that I am not 100% comfortable and not really being entirely myself. It is easier for me to see this with my work colleagues who also do presentations. I think it is natural to have an aversion to seeing ourselves on film, so I do sympathise.

Cameras are the worst! I think (hope) I look ok irl, but am the least photogenic person on earth :/
I think the dress looks fine as is, and love the sandals so :p to Ring!

It is a super dress though! I wouldn't be especially concerned. Thing is photos are static and we move, so if it is a little bit less than flattering it will only be for a fleeting second. I really like the sandals.

My sweet teenage daughter was excited about my outfit the other day and took some photos ‘for youlookfab, Mom!’. I was... less than thrilled with the results. I try to see it through her less judgmental eyes.

I wouldn’t take too much notice of details in photos. The light and angle can distort an image terribly.

Thank you all for your comments. I have learned much from you, especially in the last almost 2 months.

1. I am my own harshest critic, as I suspect many of us are. In photos my eyes zoom in on details that go unnoticed in the mirror. I forget that photos are 2-D and can distort proportions, color, and shapes.

2. I've gotten used to Ring cameras (not allowed on in house unless we are going on a trip or will be away many hours. However, outdoors I forget the cameras watch me at the doorways and I'm often surprised at how I look. I've been known to delete particularly unflattering videos, just in case.

3. I've learned from many Fabber's comments about your own photos that you also see details that the rest of the world would never notice.

I had a jump suit several years ago in the early 1980’s that I thought looked good on me until I saw photos of my parents anniversary when I was wearing it. Yuk. I could not get rid of it fast enough. The worst part was how baggy it looked, especially in back.
I don’t think your dress looks bad. Maybe wait and see what your alterations person says can be done. If you don’t think you will wear it, pass it on.

Joy, I'm going to keep it for now. I think it could be altered to add an extension to give me more length in the upper body. It is such a nice fabric. I might have it taken up at the hem as well.

Maybe I just need to get used to wearing dresses again!

The dress looks nice. Boden often cut their dresses with very short torsos - so many are like this that it must be a deliberate styling?!?

Hahah, I have the same comment as Shevia - I look so bad in candid photos; I'd be fully in despair if I took much notice of them!

I love this dress - it looks great! BUT as always, if it doesn't feel good, then it doesn't deserve you
