Hello Everyone!

Following my little "freak out" threads over the past few weeks, I thought that it only fitting (pardon the pun), to show you the bridesmaid dress that was selected last weekend for my future SIL and brother's wedding.

I was surprised that the bride actually decided to go with ruby red. This was absolutely fine with me as I LOVE wearing red.

On the day, I was very brave as we tried on dresses and as per some of your wise advice, (mostly) kept my opinions very much to myself. In fact, when we got to the shop I told her to go and look at the dresses, choose the ones she liked and we would then try them on for her to see what she thought.

I was (inwardly) amused that given my angst and frustration which I vented on here, that I ended up being the "mature" and supportive bridesmaid as the other (very tall) bridesmaid made snippy little "I'll wear it if I you tell me that I HAVE to" type comments (please imagine surly voice and 'attitood') when the bride suggested that she may actually like us to wear red instead of blue.

(Reality was that the red dress colour really suited her, but it turns out that *many* years ago, her sister had told her she couldn't wear red. Of course bride and I could not be possibly right about this matter, hence the bad attitude. At this point I must confess I got a tad snippy myself and told the other bridesmaid outright that her sister was WRONG about this matter and to pull her head in! Yes, it is an Aussie expression, we can be a forthright bunch on occasion! I thought the bride to be would kiss me. Likewise, I just ignored temporary death stares from other bridesmaid - hey I have kids - I'm used to them being cranky with me!)

So, without further ado, here it is - It is dress number #4 on the screen (Mr K 4552). Sadly, there won't be any of me in it until early/mid September when the dress comes in and it is altered to fit properly.

Opinions, thoughts?

I will be seeking your advice in the future about silver high-heels, so if any come straight to mind as a suggestion that could work they would be most welcome!

Even if you all hate the dress, I just wanted to say thanks very much for your help in making me (and hopefully the bride) feel good about this day and helping me to accept whatever dress she decided on!

Whew that must be a relief to get to this side of the dress decision! It's a lovely dress, I'm sure you will look beautiful and elegant in it. Is it the same red as K4733?

I think the dress itself is stunning. How did you feel in it? I bet you look fabulous in red.

Re: silver shoes. I think strappy sandals would be nice, Betts and Novo almost always have affordable stuff suitable for bridesmaids.

I really like that dress, and the color is rich and lovely. I'm glad that it didn't end up being a dress that you hated. I'm sure it feels good to have that part of the wedding done!

It's a lovely dress for a bridesmaid. (or any formal event!) I'd love to be able to show you what I had to wear to my sisters wedding as the maid of honor, but thankfully there's no pictures on the internet of that! Think cocktail length pink satin with a *huge* bum bow in the back and a pink hat with a little veil...

My sis and I *both* shudder when we think about it, but hey at the time (25 years ago) it was all the rage! LOL Fashion changes, love and friendship last a lot longer than the latest trend.

So good of you to "suck it up" and be a wonderful help to the (probably very overwhelmed) bride!

Oh my gosh, Kim, I was in a friend's wedding in '85 (I think) and we bridesmaids wore BRIGHT purple satin dresses with HUGE butt bows AND almost huge shoulder bows What on earth were those dress designers thinking?

So, Katiepea, I think you actually have a dress that you will never regret wearing!!

Echoing Stringy, the dress looks beautiful in the picture ~ and how did you feel with it on? I can imagine you looking lovely in it. And lots of possibilities for using it after the wedding with a bit of shortening, no?

Looks like a great dress! Lovely colour and the style looks like it will be flattering. I think you would be able to have it shortened afterwards very easily, if you'd like to be able to wear it to dressy but not "floor-length formal" events in the future.

I really like the dress, actually. It looks like it would be suitable on several different bodies as well. Well done on being a good shopping companion. But what does it mean to pull your head in? Is that like 'get with the program'?

I help to plan weddings and am always surprised how often brides choose the color red. Here (USA) it is more often used as the accent color with black dresses and tuxedos but gray is now becoming popular (for female and male attendants) and red is still used. It shows up well in pictures and makes the reception tables "pop".
As far as the dress - it is a modern but classic look and is flattering on many shapes. I am always happy to see brides choose this style because it makes the pictures more timeless. Unlike the 80s big bow look where anyone viewing those photos today could identify the era they were taken in, classic looks remain forever elegant and tasteful.

YAY!!!! Oh my goodness, I went to bed early last night and got up to so many wonderful comments. I feel SO good inside my heart right now, you have no idea (or maybe you do). Thank you VERY much everyone! <tee-hee :-)>

I did actually feel REALLY good in the dress and was secretly so excited when the bride decided on this style of dress and in the colour red. I couldn't believe my luck!

The bride was a tad indecisive about whether to choose a red or blue dress, but when I asked questions like "what colour are the flowers you've chosen?" (Red for her, white for us); table decorations (red, white and silver) etc, it suddenly became very clear, that she had a secret preference for red all along. The only reason she hadn't mentioned it earlier was that miss tall bridesmaid had been so adament about her dislike for wearing the colour (which as stated before is not based on reality), that she had discarded the notion. It was only when she saw us in the dress colour (realised that miss tall actually looked LOVELY in the colour), that she realised that SHE really liked it and just needed some support to go with it.

With it being red, I definately see myself having the ability to wear it again as a formal dress somewhere in the future, should there be a reason.

The only thing I'm a tad worried about is that I ordered a size 8 Aussie dress (so that would be, say... a 4 US?) rather than the size 10 (size 6). The 10 was quite biggish around the bust area and required work on the shoulders and on the website it stated that a size 8 was exactly my measurements (except for my waist, which is currently 1" over). So, guess who is now watching her weight? Still, I don't mind, I'm not happy that I've put on a couple of kgs anyway and would like to be in shape for our summer, so the timing and extra motivation suits me! (I have 11 weeks, not that I'm counting or anything.)

(PS - Scarlet, I giggled so much over your "get with the program" comment as a translation for my "pull your head in" - I wasn't sure if it was an international saying or an Aussie (crass) slang - now I know! <giggle> I'd say it's exactly that (ie, get your act together and stop being such a pain in the b*tt))

Katie - sounds like a great call on the size. another term is use for get with the program often is "log on!!"

I'm very used to bridesmaid dress being utterly HIDEOUS. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that this one is a beautiful dress!

Good job for being such a supportive bridesmaid. Weddings are absolute nightmares as far as I'm concerned and anyone who can get through one without throwing a temper tantrum deserves a medal.

Katiepea, it sounds like it worked out well because you're going to look lovely in that dress! But the best thing is that you were able to put your ego aside for the bride and be the voice of maturity. That's probably the greatest gift you could possibly give her, as I'm sure she has a million other worries on her mind right now. I really admire how you behaved--this is what it means to be gracious. Good for you!
