Red sweater, part 2

People gave me various suggestions about "saving" this sweater, which I feel might be going out of date. It is a tunic length with an odd, tapered bottom. Here are some things I tried...

1. with wider legged pants
2. tucked in
3. with belt--I liked this, though the belt is a little too small. I like the napkin-bottom effect it creates.
4. new moto boots I got
5. missed the photo with my moto boots, so here with ankle boots
6. with black culottes and ankle boots, and a sweater underneath with leopard/red trim
7. side view
8. with tights, bike shorts and ankle boots, and leopard trim
9. with tights, bikes shorts and moto boots, and leopard trim

I think 6-7 works the best. Takes advantage of the hemline in the best way, and looks a little avant-garde.

Oh I quite like it with the rolled jeans although my eye is looking for a chunkier shoe to balance out the volume higher up in the outfit. Maybe try that combo with the moto boots?

I dig the layered look too -- clever!

SarahD8--thank you! I think I did have a belted pic with the moto boots that I lost. I will have to try that belted and unbelted.

Val--thanks. I do like the tights look. Don't know where I'd be going with it, but it's fun.

So I suggested the wide leg pants but I think they must not be rolled. I visualize full length, kind of slouchy jeans with this top. I do love the last two pics and the look on your face says maybe you do too.

Star--thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the modern, slouchy pants yet--we'll see if I get them. The two I have are these wide, straight ones--jeans and black culottes. I also feel like volume on volume has been going on awhile now, and I'm not sure I love it. But maybe a pair of army green cargos...

Yes, try the army green cargos. I like the sound of that. I too am not doing volume over volume, as my legs are my best asset and if I hide them I am a blob. Btw, I thrifted a grey knit in January, and I think it is very similar to your red sweater and I love it. I never thought of it as a tunic, just a long-ish knit.

I think 6/7 is my favorite. You could wear it with your new boots too.

I like #5 best, the ankle boots. I think I would also like the ankle boots too. To my eye the tunic looks best with something substantial.

6, 7, 8 & 9 are my favourites, with the bike shorts looks winning for me!

I really like 6 and 7. Agree with Star that it would be fun to see you try the cargos.

My favourite is the last version. I would omit the leopard trim. Substitute fishnets for the tights (for some edge) and throw a knee length (or maxi length) coat over the top to reduce the seasonal confusion and make the layering more interesting.

I like 6/7 too but would omit the trim.

Do you have black tall shaft ankle boots (or knee high boots) that would close the gap between shoe and pants in 6/7? I think that would look good too.

I would like to see the jumper over full length flares. Not strictly a volume on volume look because flares are usually fitted at the thigh. Kind of a Rachel Zoe 70s glam bohemian look, which is very cool IMO.

Yes Brooklyn that is the vision I had too. Flares that are fitted at the thigh, not full on volume on volume.

Star--yes, volume on volume is tricky to pull off, for a lot of people, I think.

ChristelJ--thanks. I don't know if I'll get cargos, but I bet I'd wear them a lot if I did.

Brooklyn--bold assertions, but you're right--the leopard does stick out a bit. I wish I found a different way to make it work, but I was just playing, anyway. I love the idea of a long coat (I think I have a knee-length one). I also have patterned fishnets coming in the mail. So maybe I'll give it a try! Would love some of those flared pants you mentioned, but probably won't get them until there is more of a need.

Carol, it’s just my opinion of course. Sorry if I was too assertive!

This photo from Anthropologie kind of shows what I think you could do with the last outfit (substituting bike shorts and long sweater for the skirt and sweater in the photo). I think, recalling your initial post about the sweater, you were worried that it was dated? This is a very current silhouette.

I like the same ones as April. I think it is too bulky a sweater to tuck. I think the culottes work and I find it flattering on you.

So fun to experiment - why not! The bike shorts look is fun.

I would wear this with leggings and sneakers too as a really easy weekend or casual look.

Brooklyn--nice photo. I can see how that's current. Also, a mini with a long coat is timeless. I do have a white jean mini that is a bit too small on me right now, but if it fits, I will try it with that, and maybe no tights.

Sal--yes, the last 4 seem to be the most popular. Good point about tucking...that is always a challenge for me! I never know how influencers are always doing that with sweaters.

I like 1, 3 & 6

1) The looser bottoms feel more trendy, but do you have a similar silhouette in a darker colour (like black)? That could work too.

3) I like the belted shape but this may not read as modern, which sounds like your aim (I remember belting knitwear was a 'thing' in the 2000s)

6) I like the concept of fabric peeking out, & the leopard print contrasts more against the black for a more 'graphic' (edgy) integrity. Maybe a different print against the denim? Though I like @Brooklyn's suggestion - perhaps a darker coat on top could balance?

Oooh, fun! I like 1 and 6/7 best but the bike shorts also work. The colour is fab on you, as we all agreed before, and the sweater is versatile.

My absolute favourite is # 8/9. I like the fresh, unexpected vibe given by the shorts. I agree that this outfit would look fabulous with a longish coat as suggested by Brooklyn .
