Quick Question about the '90s

Does anybody else remember it being as BEIGE as it was black?

I'm working through the 2019 Spring & Summer Ready-to-Wear collections - wading through hundreds of shows so that I can formulate my trends post - and there is SO MUCH BEIGE. I think it's a '90s throwback.

Hmm. This does not leave me thrilled, but we all know it's not exclusive . I was in my 30's in the 90's and definitely not dressing in beige - that I can tell you. I love a classic camel and cool beige though, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out at retail.

Oh, for sure. I'm pretty sure that's where the original soul sucking beige was born... I remember lots of horrid pleated front khakis in particular, and beige-toned ditsy floral baby tees, and that kind of thing. That's one aspect of the 90s that I am happy to leave behind, lol.
The epitome of 90s beige fashion will always be Seinfeld for me. Elaine wore a lot of beige and earth tones.

Lisa P, there are a billion shades of beige on the runways, so I'm sure your beige is covered!

I wore a lot of beige with white in the '90s (I was in my twenties). I remember it being the alternative to black, so I went with it. It was also a break from all the brights and neons of the '80s - (which I loved with all my heart).

Yes! I loved those long, flowing linen wide leg pants. I wore them with those chunky black platform sandals with huge soles!

I do remember beige chinos - I guess those are a classic though?
Beige pants were also more of a default for uniforms I think, both work and school. Now they are more likely black or navy. I do think it was more unavoidable in general, although I always hated it so I did manage! Except for wanting those classic chinos as promoted by the Gap, which just never ever fit me right.

When I think of 90s fashions I mostly think of:

- oversized linen shirts
- pleated linen pants (often in browns and creams and beiges)
- black chunky footwear
- slip dresses (sometimes worn with white tee under)
- lots of browns in the late 90s
- cargo pants (full length and three quarter)

In my wedding photos several of my trendy friends are wearing midi skirts and tops in dark browns, very modest and understated, and actually quite dowdy.

I like some colours in this range - but like with greys I have to be careful.

I had some designer outfits in the 90s. Most were black but I remember a pair of beige high rise Armani trousers and a Joan & David beige pant suit.

I had to think about this, but I do recall that in the early/mid-90s, I considered beige pleated trousers to be a staple in my wardrobe. I didn't like them, but it did seem like something that "everyone" had. By the late '90s I had moved to black for my main neutral.

I was in high school and college during the nineties, and while there was definitely a lot of black, I don’t remember much beige at all.

I remember beige. Linen trousers. With white. A raincoat. I married in a light beige trousersuit in 1994.
I would love to try beige again.

Definitely - I wore all kinds of beige. I guess it was a pendulum swing after the colorful eighties ... it recall being about the neutrals, but navy wasn't really in that I recall, and we seem not to have been familiar with gray ... so lots of black and beige/tan/taupe was in my closet and on my wishlist for sure.

what i remember was in the early 90s there was a recession (at least in the US) and coming so close to the 1987 Stock Market Crash, retail was hurting and clothing got more conservative.

Yes, absolutely. I remember so much of '90s clothing seeming dirty, and the beige was a big part of that. And actually, it was not only beige, but olive and taupe and all sorts of indeterminate neutrals. I much prefer sharper contrasts, so it doesn't thrill me if it is coming back!

Oh, and what about Banana Republic's "safari" branding? The safari trend was more 80s, no? I wonder if the colour palette stuck around for a while, even though the styles became more minimal. Didn't Gap buy out BR in the 90s and nix all the Jeeps and pith helmets? But they definitely hung onto the khaki.

I remember very fondly a little safari suit that I wore as a young child in the late 80s/early 90s. My parents were not fashion people *at all* so it must've been a pretty widespread trend if I had one.

I remember a lot of beige khaki specifically. Pants and skirts mostly. I was in college and my school was very preppy though (j. Crew as far as the eye could see) so it might have been more heavily represented than elsewhere.

I actually remember lots of greys, but that was in the late 90s. Grey and minimalism and Calvin Klein. I have just started college and for a couple of years there was nothing you can by other then grey.

Yeah, I remember having a beige pant suit in sort of a silk like material that had to be dry cleaned. I wore it a lot for work.

And wasn’t it in the nineties when everyone was painting the interiors of homes taupe with white trim?

The only beige I remember were in men’s khakis.
Beige would have never made its way into my wardrobe in any memorable way popular or not then...or now
