Quick BR K/R -ETA shirt styling fail

Those shirt and pants just arrived. Fabric is great for the heat and I got both things on huge discount. But how does it look? Will probably not wear it together, this is just to try it on quickly. Too tired for styling. What do you think? Worth keeping?

Both? I like pants a lot, but worried that they will stretch out. And not sure about shirt, does it look somewhat masculine?

Sounds like you're worried about them. They don't look bad, but I'm used to seeing you in more vibrant colors. How about a try on how you'd style them, since you said you wouldn't wear together.

I like the shirt, but am on the fence about the pants. Seems like you could sub that shirt in place of any chambray-type shirt - do you have one of those?

Shirts have a harder and stricter edge to them for sure. But in soft fabrics, they SOFTEN. I have the boxy red linen version. I think it's soft and pretty. The white buttons help.

I can't reassure you about stretch. But what I see now I like!

suntiger - I always prefer buying colorful items when in reality I need neutrals to ground all the colored items I already have. I will try styling them tomorrow, hopefully that will help me to assess better.
nemosmom - I ordered this shirt because I wanted to replace my only ancient chambray shirt that has some ruffles on the front and I am off ruffles at the moment and don’t like to wear it any more.
Angie - the color makes your shirt much prettier. I like it better than mine, but unfortunately I don’t need another red shirt, have very similar silk one, now I need more neutrals. How do you wear yours - tucked or untucked?

Another really nice outfit on you. What shoes will you wear? I have an unloved pair of cropped wide leg twill pants, and looking at your photo I think mine need to be shortened. Yours are a very flattering length.

They look like they fit fine. I like them on you and I imagine you will style them so they look great. I have similar pants (not so wide but same fabrication) from BR and they do stretch out some, especially in the butt. I am trying to make peace with it.

I like the pants a lot (for the record, I'm a wide leg crops fan). I think they'll look great with your bright welted pullovers.

Pants are off the table, I already wore them this morning groceries shopping.
Aquamarine, I am more worried that they will stretch at the waist since they don’t have a belt loops. I don’t want them sliding down.
I am very unsure about the shirt and leaning towards returning. But maybe I change my mind when I try them with my colored pants - great suggestions SarahDB.

I love how you styled the pants. I'm thinking of adding some yellow to my summer wardrobe. I like the shirt too! I would wear it also opened instead of a jacket on summer evenings.

My opinion is that every wardrobe needs those stylish quiet pieces, well fitted but not statements. Your instincts seem to be telling you the same thing. Plus you have a beautiful feminine figure, lovely hair.... you don't need to worry about a buttondown making you look masculine! But if it makes YOU feel that way, that's what matters. You might not feel drawn to wearing it?

After quickly trying shirt with my yellow pants and red jeans, I think it should go back. For comparison I am also showing my ancient chambray shirt that I would like to replace because of the ruffles at front. But somehow I think old one looks better. Do you agree?

I agree, Archie. The pants are SUPER fab as you have styled them but the shirt is a little meh. Yes, I like the old shirt better too. I sympathize with the wish for no ruffles. Can you look for something with a similar smooth texture? Somehow it stands up better to the bright pants. I like the more fitted cut better for your style, too.

The shirts are cut very differently. The chambray cuts in to show your shape and the other skims it. The second might be cooler in heat. You would need to punch up the outfit with something else traditionally feminine to have a similar net effect.
I think it could work but it is not a replacement.

Interesting about the shirt. I like the new one better but clearly it hides your waist in a way the older shirt does not. I see it more in terms of being flattering to your face and "effortless". Love the wide pants with yellow top!

I think the shirt, because of the natural creasing and the faded colours, reads very casual. Like wear over linen pants or distressed jeans to garden or walk in the beach kind of causal. So it doesn’t work with the slacks which are crisper.

I am late but I love the pants with the yellow top. I agree about returning the shirt. It is okay but I think not great on you. I think either more shaped or a softer blouse. Your old one is nicer on you.

I do agree with Bennett - we do need quiet classy pieces to make the stars shine!

Hmm, I really like the shirt but then again I prefer a tomboyish style. Fwiw, it definitely looks effortless and the fit and drape are great. But better follow your gut: if you want something more feminine or fitted, then this one needs to go back.
Loved the trousers too!

Anchie, I love the pants, especially with your yellow top and sandals - so polished and cool for summer.

The shirt is interesting. I can see how your old chambray shirt is more tailored, being cut into the body and thus more conventionally flattering. However, this more boxy shirt will be cooler to wear in the heat and I like it particularly semi tucked. It works beautifully with your colourful trousers. Whether this tomboy style is right for you, well only you can judge that because it is a change from your usual and very flattering silhouette that is shown with the knit top. Perhaps you need to follow Angie's lead and for a boxy tomboy style shirt, get it in a pretty colour and for a neutral shirt, get a more tailored fit.
