This post is for anyone who's ever worried about being age-inappropriate. The title is taken from Beth Ann's comment on my "dress to offset" post--I thought it summed up something a lot of us are aiming for!
Really great bloggers such as Angie, Imogen, and Sally have written comprehensively about this, and it's not my aim to delineate guidelines for being stylish without being MDAL (mutton dressed as lamb).
I'm more trying to get at our experience of trying to dress stylishly without "trying too hard" or "looking like a kid" or any of the various phrases including MDAL that loom up inside our heads as we contemplate injecting novelty into our fashion routines.
I think a lot of the worry is misplaced. Denise, may I use you as an example? (I sure hope so.) I've heard Denise (CocoLion) both in person and in the forum express concern about being age-inappropriate. Yet I have never seen her in a stitch of clothing that wasn't beautiful, elegant, and 100% appropriate. So I want to tell her to quit worrying. She could respond that the reason she looks appropriate is because she worries about it!
I remember once a younger colleague called me "hip." My whole body froze, my eyes opened wide, and I said, "But am I--am I--" and then my colleague took pity on me and assured me that I was age appropriate.
This is what I want to ask:
1. Do you worry about dressing in an age-inappropriate fashion?
2. Have you ever worn an item or outfit that ended up making you feel you were dressed age-inappropriately? What was it?
3. What has worked *for you* to feel that you are projecting the right kind of youthfulness, that is, current but age appropriate? This could be specific items or styles, or it could be general guidelines.
I can't wait to hear!
