Problem with the flared crops look...

Hubs told me today he is not a fan. Even with heeled sandals. Oops. I was wearing the BR ones this morning and ended up rolling them a bit to wear with slip-on sneakers to take the big dogs to the beach for a little playtime.

So I'll probably mostly wait to wear them until times when he's not around, but this insures I won't invest any more in that look! He says they remind him too much of "mom capris."

It's not very often he doesn't care for a style that I try, so I do take his opinion into account. Doesn't mean I'll abandon it altogether, but I will pick and choose when and how to wear those styles he doesn't love.

I don't have much to say here other than " hmmm, interesting. " I can actually see how it may not appeal to men. Let's face it, it's not the sexiest and most sophisticated cut. I think it runs "cute" more than anything .

Mr. Suz is also not a fan. Oddly, he was a fan of boyfriend jeans from the start. And he has come to accept the slim straight or skinny version of crops. But he is still a bit mystified by the kick crop flare. I do think it's not the best look for me, personally, so that is probably part of it.

Mr. Joy is also not on board, although I tell him that these are my version of shorts for hot weather. He understands that, I think. It also helps if I use old jeans that I would be donating for a DIY project rather than spending for a designer version

I kind of agree - I am trying to decide if they are a kind of "emperor's new clothes" situation, where everyone is afraid to say "these are just your old capris on everyone who isn't Blake Lively." It's like everything I've learned about PPL is now irrelevant. All the same, I've seen all of you look pretty amazing in them when styled properly. I also realized I don't wear heels casually, so having these are a casual item doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think they are a style with a few caveats.

They can look great and be a fun change from skinny or long denim, and lets face it capri/cropped/ three quarter/pedal pusher pants are always going to be popular in one form or another for women in summer. Since I was 12 I have so many different shaped pairs of pants ending from under the knee to above the ankle, in jeans/cargo/trouser/chino/silky/sweatshirt fabrics. They are the latest version of that trend with the advantage that they are also trendy with ankle boots in cooler weather.

When I did a quick google search on cropped flare denim I came up with lots of images all of tall thin model shaped women who have dressed them in a fashion/quirky/cool way.

I am not sure what my point is now:)

That you take your husband into consideration when you wear certain styles is a very caring thing to do. I starting to become used to this look because of YLF I never thought of flared crops.

I doubt the longevity of the trend because it's a tricky look for someone who doesn't live, or work, in a fashion-oriented environment. Personally, I'm not crazy about investing a lot of time and energy trying to pull off a JFE outfit that engenders a lukewarm reaction from those around me.

So it's not just my husband! Well, I was feeling ok about this style when done with very deliberate styling, and only certain shoes or boots. It's not as effortless or as versatile as I would like. I have bought a few pairs of pants/jeans in this cut (and cut off an old pair of boot cuts) but the good thing is, if the style really doesn't work for me, I can cut any of those off further into clamdiggers (or even shorter above-knee shorts if the heat of summer really dictates), which is a style that is more foolproof for me.

DH calls them my "short pants". ha! I don't know if he likes them or not, only that he has noticed them Generally speaking though he seems to like more trendy or stylish looks -- I'm always surprised when he gives me the thumbs up on something I think is a bit "out there". I have told him I think it's because he grew up in Europe in the 70s...they wore some really amazing, groovy clothes!!

That heel comment IS interesting. I absolutely wear heels casually. I still think kick crops are cute, but that's it - and I bet the style all but disappears from the stores by this time next year.

I kept my kick flares but am still having doubts about them. I have worn them once and, oddly enough, my DH really likes them. Better than I do! He doesn't really like skinnies and also wants me to cut my hair really short. So he's kind of unusual. For a bloke.

One time during last winter my SO said why are your pants so short and I just laughed. But if he said he didn't like them I would definitely take that into account.

Confession time, I never stopped wearing my old crop 'flares' in summer that I purchased at least 15 years ago. I have a pair of black light weight jean style and a crazy zebra print pair that have survived over the years. So I guess when cropped flares started trending again I was excited because I've neve stopped liking them. Wearing them in fall/winter with booties was new to me and gave me a much needed change from rolled skinnies all the time. But I've been trying to figure out exactly what Una said, how are these different than my old capris? The fabric and rise is updated but other than that, I can't find a difference. I know they are not my most flattering jeans ever but crops along with skinny jeans are the most practical for my lifestyle.

I'm hesitating about adding more crops than the one pair of BR resin wash which I like. Getting used the idea of shorter pants and waiting to see if this trend lasts before I jump in.

I haven't invested in any of the shorter or cropped pants. I did order a pair of C of H cropped jeans and DH vetoed them. He took a pic and when I saw it I agreed. The only way I could wear them was to wear heels. I only wear heels for special occasions.
For me pants generally work best if they are narrow and ankle length, wide and very long, or short and mid thigh.

I wore my first pair of obviously flared crops (all my others are straights) and I felt a bit funny to be honest. I went with it, but I'm sure there were people who did not get it. DH did not comment.

Mine weren't a hit with DH either. It doesn't bother me. I'll continue to wear them but not when I'm with him.

This *is* interesting. My own DH rarely dislikes clothing items, but when he does I usually pass them on -- or don't buy in the first place as he shops with me. (The exception is my EF harems, which have grown on him.) My motto is, he's the one who actually looks at me all day. I'm not dressing to please, but I also don't want to engage in full-on visual assault.

He thinks the 3 pairs of crops I own look very 60s gamine and is fine with them. I don't yet have kick flares, though, as still have to find a pair where flare placement works for my short legs. Petites are too low in the rise, and cutting off regulars means i lose the flare. If enough people think this is a flash trend, it may not be worth the hunt.

I am a bit behind the curve having only started wearing cropped pants of any kind a year or two ago and not the flared ones. DH has no interest in fashion but will make jokes carefully crafted to avoid saying what he really thinks...I rarely get a straightforward thumbs up or thumbs down on anything. I've been playing with rolled slim/boyfriend jeans lately and he has been saying "are you expecting a flood"?

When I rolled up the hems of the BR jeans so they just looked like regular rolled jeans, my husband liked it much better. I guess I know how I'll be wearing them while he's around. I mean, I get it. They do look more flattering and less stumpifying that way. I wore flared crops many years ago and thought they looked kind of cute (well, as cute as anything can look on me, at least), but I was a size or two smaller back then. My husband is way too tactful (and smart) to comment when I've gained weight, although he always "notices" when I lose.

I personally don't care for this trend. I think they look great on most everyone else but totally goofy on long-legged me. I love the straight legged version (capris, clamdiggers, etc.) but not the flares. It will be interesting to see if this trend sticks, and if my eyes (and the eyes of others) adjust to it.

I would think the long-legged people would ace this trend, as opposed to me with the assumed stumpifying effect.

I am not enamored of this flared crop trend either, though sometimes I like the individual looks. For me, I really doubt it would look good--and I'm not invested or curious enough to run out and try a pair. Maybe my mind will change.

Funny how one of the husbands made that remark. When I was a kid in the 70's, "floodwater pants" would get you ruthlessly mocked. I can't think of a worse grade-school fashion faux pas. So maybe your husband shares that influence.

My DH is not a fan either, especially of the cropped flares with raw released hems. But I take what he says with a grain of salt. He is Mr. Normcore and has worn the same style jeans ("Dad jeans") since I met him 30 years ago… and I love him just as he is. He doesn't "get" trends or my desire to mix it up. I do not think he is greatly bothered by them, he just doesn't understand them. And I definitely think he has that "flood pants" aversion thing in his head. (We are both very tall, so we had to deal with this issue growing up.) Like you, Janet, I tend to wear these trendier pieces simply for my own enjoyment on days when I am not hanging out with hubs. As jeans are a part of my near-daily uniform, I like having different options. I am not a huge fan of shorts, so these cropped styles will get a lot of wear come summer. And I do think Mochi has a good point... I am very long legged, so I have never had to worry about cropped styles being stumpifying. I embraced the cropped flares and culottes trends right away and have not given it a second thought. But I can definitely see why these styles could be problematic or unappealing for others.

I can relate - I don't like wearing things DH doesn't like either. I haven't invested in this particular trend and didn't plan on it because it's not something I really like either - but there have been other things I have tried and ended up ditching later.

There is a difference between the old Mom capris and flared crops though ......
Our older capris tended to be one length from thigh down to mid calf, whereas the true flared crop is fitted on the thigh and flares out to a small kick , again mid calf. Anyways - my DH knows better than to comment , so I have no idea what he thinks. He is not really interested in "fashion" per se, especially trend driven things, so only comments on the broader picture.

My DH doesn't say much, and rarely discourages me from wearing whatever I want. But I confess I still haven't shown him the EF harems

I am really enjoying the kick crops. I think it's the first time in my life I've embraced a trend right out the door. I wear a lot of clamdiggers/capris in the summer, they are SO practical for my climate, that I love having another option to mix things up a bit. And I like that they work with booties as well, as capri's are strictly summer in my book. They extend the ankle baring season, when the toes aren't ready to be out.

Although I do think the rolled look is more flattering, and will have more longevity, at least for me. I think the two pairs I have (light and dark wash) will be enough. I hacked some white ones to a roll, and will likely leave them there.

I also think yours look great on you Janet. Hopefully you can sneak them out of the hose unrolled every once and a while

I've not taken part in this trend (or at least, I don't think I have: I find it difficult to understand all the nuances of ankle-pants), but I can see how there might be a certain silliness associated with flared pants that are quite cropped.

That said, there has not been a single person on this board who has not successfully worn this trend, as far as I know. It is odd that people seem to like the look less on themselves than on others.

For my part, I do enjoy straight ankle pants and culotte styles, and prefer them with flats and flip-flop style of sandals. Wearing them with heels doesn't work for me because they are more of a weekend look.

I love cropped pants but am still not sure about the flares, they do look a bit like flooding to me. My husband is pretty stylish but I think I would get some raised eyebrows from him with this look. But he's an artist so isn't really concerned with whether it is in style or not but whether is looks good to his eye. He wouldn't say anything unless I asked though, so if I try some and love them I just won't ask his opinion
