Please Help Me Pick The Next Step In My Boot Makeover

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed so far. I've gotten through the stripping, colour selection, and re-dyeing of my Miss Sixty boots, and now it's time for the next step. From the votes and suggestions in previous threads, I've narrowed it down considerably. Some of you have expressed your opinions on the board, and just as many have done so using Private Messages.

As you can see there have been a number of votes in favour of cutting them down to ankle boots. Some Private Messages have been in favour of leaving them long and cuffed. I'm going to leave their fate in the expert hands of you YLFers.

The three popular ankle boot shaft styles are here in pictures 1,2,&3.

The original boots, along with their new red colour are pictures 4 & 5.

A last minute suggestion for an ankle boot shaft is #6

Please pick your favourite ankleboot shaft from those here, or vote to keep them long and cuffed

Hi, back, Angie;

I don't think I've posted any pictures of me wearing these boots yet. I have a couple of me wearing them with jeans from before the colour change, just showing how they work with the jeans, nothing too elaborate. As soon as this boot makeover is finished, I'm going to post a bunch and show everyone how their advice and voting worked out. What started out as a plan to maybe get more wear out of them, has turned into fun project. Rae has been helpful beyond all measure, and GirlX had some wild ideas that spurred me to going that extra step with it.

Julie, I would keep them as they are, only because I find short boots harder to wear. Having done so much customizing on these to realize your vision for them, seems a shame to hide them under pants.

A bit awkward trying to hold the camera up high enough for it to focus. And the flash makes them look so shiny. A friend's suggestion to shoot the pictures with a white sheet in the background is working well. Had to take several before I actually got one of the boots. LOL!!

As you can see, at this length, they are causing an unsightly bulge in the jeans up at the knee. Another excuse to cut them short, I guess. I'm going to try and get a friend to help me take some better pictures over the weekend.

Pretty! I vote keeping them as they are, at least until you are very sure of how you want to wear them. If they are too wide in the calf, you might have them narrowed.

That's a pretty spectacular red--good choice Julie!!!!

About cutting them down--if they bulge now at the knee--will they bulge mid-calf if you cut them down that far? That's my only question--other than that I'm eating popcorn and watching!!!

Wow these dyed beautifully. Such a strong bold color, I'm in favor of them peeking out under jeans. If you cut them down though, unless you also make them slimmer, you will still get a buldge. I had a similar bootie to #1 but returned, when I realized I wanted a pair of booties that worked well with jeans and they were too bulky to fit underneath mine. If you prefer to wear with skirts, dresses or skinnies tucked into them then a style such as #1 will work well. Another option is the keep them the current length, but wear a wider flare jean or maybe a trouser jean.

Thanks for the picture, Julie. At the risk of sounding obtuse (you may have answered this question before and I apologize), why don't you wear your smashing new boots with skirts, dresses and shorts?

I remember you saying you'd wear jeans under your dresses. I was *this* close to voting to leave them tall, until you mentioned the unsightly bulge. What height are your other boots that work well with jeans?

Thanks for the comments. No, I wouldn't consider you obtuse. Perfectly reasonable question. I'm a confirmed boots and jeans girl. I do wear dresses over the jeans a fair bit of the time. I used to do the skinny jeans in boots look all the time but realized the boots are always the focal point of my outfits. People weren't noticing my dresses. I switched to boot cut jeans, and that put the focus back to where I wanted it. I miss my skinny jeans, though, and for the initial showing of the new red colour, I struggled into them with the boots under. I think it provides just the right amount of pop without over powering the outfit. There's just the issue of the boot cuffs causing a bulge in the jeans near the knee. The boot makeover may cure that, though.

Ok, Julie, my official vote is for picture #2. I like the back tab/rivet detail on #1, too, but I think the very low foldover on #1 might interfere with how the hem of your skinnines would fall. If it were *me* I'd do #2, but swap out the contrasting strap for the tab/rivet detail of #1 (sorry if that sounds indecisive, lol, I can get so nitpicky about boots as they are my passion in life. :D)

My vote is for whatever will get the boots into regular rotation in your wardrobe. Whatever the length is that you feel will make it easiest for you to say 'Ooh - I'll wear my red boots with that!' - that's the length I'm voting for. The boots are already gorgeous, so you really can't go wrong with whatever you wind up doing - they'll look awesome!

Long! Long long long!!! (And not to throw a spanner in the works, but I might leave them long but not long enough to cuff.)

P.S. I have boot # 6 in gray, and I loved them until my best friend told me they looked like Robin Hood boots...

Wonderful series of postings you have here, Julie. You have done a magnificent job on your boots. I know the Miss Sixty Dance boots. Very nice boots to start with, but you've taken them up several notches. A true work of art. Took me a few minutes to figure out what all you meant by a boot makeover, but I get it now. You want to be able to wear them with as many pieces and to be as versatile as possible. I see you'll only be wearing them under jeans, also a look I really like myself. The red colour is just spectacular!! They look perfect peeking their toes out from under your dark skinny jeans, but I see what you mean by them bulging.

So, therefore, I'm going to vote that you cut them down. And cut them down as short as possible. Go all the way with them.

Regards a shaft style, well, nothing taller than the number 1 above, but with a folded down top, or cuff like number 2 only without the rope and tassel. The little detail in the back of number 1 is cute, too. You don't want anything to take away from the stitching detail over the top of the foot.

I think this is so cool and interesting. Please everyone get involved and help Julie out. Her efforts so far, and willingness to let the members here decide the fate of her gorgeous boots deserve our admiration.

You mentioned in your pm that you want to wear them with skinnies as well - so I guess my vote is for #1, since that's the shortest. You'll have to go as short as possible since very few shafts will go under a skinny jean.

Julie, I really cannot get past my "I love these boots long" filter...so while I've read all your reasoning for shortening the shaft, I am going to vote keep as is. Something about preserving the integrity of the beautiful boots. Sorry!

I am on Team keep the boots as is, but if you are desperate to crop them, style #1 gets my vote. I wonder if the width will be sufficiently narrowed with this style change though? The same bunching problem may occur under your jeans.

Julie, you tried the boots on as-is with your skinnies, right? ("I struggled into them with the boots under. I think it provides just the right amount of pop without over powering the outfit. There's just the issue of the boot cuffs causing a bulge in the jeans near the knee.") So no need to cut them shorter than you want in order to make sure they fit... you *know* they fit. You just have to pick a style that will not add cuff bulk to your ankles, as Angie mentioned above.

How would #1 be accomplished--could you turn it back up----> is it a cuff and you have to dye the inside or is the cuff part cut off inverted and sewn back on so it is fixed?
Do you know how to use Photoshop--maybe you can do a cut and paste sketch in the different styles for a better idea.

Add--I ask about #1 coz the shape of the boot reminds me of your boot---and I ask about the cuff being turn up-able only for thought of flexibility of a high and low boot in one. I did however not notice the detail on the back with the rivets--I am more thinking of the style.

Look-wise I vote for 1, but I am not sure how this will work with the leather. Can the lower inside be dyed the same way?

Further to your message; I would cut them down into #2 if it was my choice ... if the boots would go into that design; you would have to narrow the shaft too, I would imagine.

Hi Julie, I am chiming in to say that if you are going to cut them down, I vote for #1, IF it is feasible to flip the cuff like that and make it all look good. However, I love the boots long. Is there a photo of you wearing them in one of these threads, so I can see how tall they are on you?

I'll keep following here to see what is going on... and not to mess with your head, but did you already consider mid-calf? I'm finding my mid-calf cognac boots to be my go-to boots, surprisingly! I'm off to review the old threads again...

i think 6 is cool though i think it might be cool to keep them tall, below the knee and just get rid of the cuff to make them more usable for bootcut jeans.

Julie, in response to your PM question, I didn't pick style 1 because it was shortest. It just seems truest to the original style of the boots to me. Pic 6 for instance is a really pretty boot, but I think it works better with a more delicate heel. I must say though, I am wondering, if you plan to wear these boots mainly under jeans, then perhaps it would be better just to go for a well-fitting mid-calf length like AlaskaGirl says. I was thinking style 1 would probably have to be worn over skinnies and under bootcuts. I am not sure how those looks appeal to you. The photo you did post of your red boots peaking out under jeans looked really cute.

I vote to leave them as is, or at least leave them as tall boots even if you don't want them to be cuffed. They are *beautiful* boots, and while I was skeptical about changing them from their pretty original color, I love the hot red color they ended up as.
