Please help choose DD's dress

I thought I had a hard time with dress shopping. Gah, shopping for DD is a nightmare. We hit Macy's and H&M and found two possibilities. I've looked at so many that I can't see straight. We brought one home and put one on 24 hour hold. Is there a hands down winner? Deets: She's 13 and it's the winter formal. Everyone wears short dresses.

I like how the red color looks on her skin. I am no help with the appropriateness of this dress for the event (have boys and never been to anything formal myself) but it looks very cute on her.

The red color looks great but I like the style of #2 a lot more.

From what we can see of her, DD is adorable in both dresses. I like the red best.

Both dresses are gorgeous, but particularly given her age I think the red is lovely and youthful.

I like the red one and my 15 yr old DD concurs. The ruffles are very flattering; they seem to give her more curves IMHO. The mom in me likes that it might be a teensy bit longer than the black one. At any rate, she is Bee-you-te-ful and would look like a model even in a Hefty garbage bag. She takes after you proud Mama!

The ruching plus the ruffles in #1 seem ALGO to me, FWIW.

#2 seems more sophisticated and charming.

However, she is young and ALGO might be right up her alley!

I vote #2 as well. #1 just seems a bit much with all the ruffles and such.

I think they are both cute but perhaps the red one is a bit cuter. I would be a touch concerned that the black/grey is a bit shorter if you ignore the netting. Sometimes girls that young aren't as comfortable in a shorter skirt and don't remember to sit properly.

You are all awesome! We came home with the black dress but I wasn't 100% sure about it. She has very square shoulders with a tiny waist and no hips--the red dress gave her curves but she is SO not a ruffle-y or fussy type. She likes edgy and urban so when she saw the H&M dress she decided it was much more her style. I just couldn't decide if it was flattering or not. It's very cute on and she will wear it with sliders so I'm not worried about the length. She's also figured out how to wear it layered over a tee; with leggings and her biker jacket, and with boots--"you know, mom, like for everyday." LOL! She picked out a leather bracelet with rhinestones to wear with it too : )

Thanks for your reassurance that it looks good. It's great to have so many GF's to give us a second opinion!

What fun, Kelly! I'm no expert (my DD is only 5), but I love that black dress on her! She'll be a knockout! I can't wait to see her post her "everyday" outfit LOL ; )

She's adorable in either dress, and I have this funny feeling she takes after her mom!

She will look great at the formal!

Hmmm...thinking ahead to when my daughter is 13 and needs to go to a formal; she will be wanting to go androgynous. Hope I can find her a nice tux.

Both are lovely on your DD! If I was forced to choose, though, I would go with the black. You mentioned your daughter likes "edgy", and I think that one edges out the pretty red satin one!

I think the red one is very pretty, but if your daughter's style is edgy -- well, it's the black dress, hands down. They are both lovely and she needs to wear what feels most like herself. So, have you made a decision about shoes?? And a handbag?

I chose #2 straight off. After hearing her ideas for everyday, I am even more convinced.

Your daughter is beautiful...I can't wait to go dress shopping with my girls. My oldest, though, probably won't be caught dead in a dress. Anyway, I like #2 better. She looks more comfortable in it, somehow, in the pictures.

#2 was the perfect choice. Your daughter is so cute. My dd is 9, and I can't imagine her at a school formal. How fun!

@Suz: They had some great tux pieces at H&M. DD was eyeing those furiously too!
@Jenava: Sorry--It’s the term they use for bike shorts--they wear them under their shorts to protect their thighs when they slide or to add coverage to a too short skirt (eyeroll--I know.)
