Hello all, I am wondering if I can possibly get any fashion advice from nice ladies here?

As you can see I am a crossdresser so I hope that doesn't offend anyone. I am however a nice person and like I say really would like some advice.

Basically I have never ventured out as Katie but am hoping to in the coming months. I gradually want to build up my outfit for my big night and have already bought a really nice skirt however I am really struggling to find a nice top to go with it. I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me with ideas on tops (and shoes, accessories etc)? I would really appreciate it.

Of course if anyone is willing to help me you would need to see a picture of the skirt I have so if it's OK would love to chat on msn, yahoo, skype, email etc.

The skirt is beautiful! I don't know why, but the skirt immediately made me think of Eva Marie-Saint, and the ballet-neck blouses and dresses she wore in North by Northwest.

I picture something in a silky jersey fabric, ivory color, with that ballet neck, longer sleeves, and then a lovely black belt to cinch the waist. A single strand of pearls.

But I don't know your size, shape, or style preferences at all, so I may be way off the mark with what you might love

That's a really pretty skirt. It looks as if you will be dressing up! Will you belt it at the waist? I can see it finished off in so many ways. What colours do you like near your face? That will be something to consider.

If you want to dress it down a bit, Angie's blog post today might be helpful.

I am not sure if it helps I am 5'7" with size 7 feet. I am relatively slim (size 12) and do a lot of running/gym work.

I really like the skirt and want the best top to go with it. I think if I could choose colours I would be looking at red/black/navy blue etc.

Also, you can't really see it in the picture but the skirt has a 2 inch black silk belt at the top so may not need a belt as such. If you click on the link the skirt has quite a good description.

I just kind of picture myself in the skirt with a nice top, nice shoes and bag and other accessories but definitely need some help!!! AARRGGHHH

I'm going to make some assumptions here, but-- you are probably a T-shape (due to your shoulders), and I would read Angie's advice about how to dress that body type. Especially as it sounds like you are going for "modern classic with a touch of fim noir heroine". Stay away from sharp shoulders. If you want to go sleeveless, then wider straps. As for shoes-- get some you can walk-in! I'd go with a lower wedge unless you are already comfortable in heels. Angie's reccomendations shoe reccomendations are awesome, so I'd look as some of those.

I love the skirt, too. When you debut, what type of event do you plan on attending ? If it is somewhat casual , I also think that a boatneck , striped T shirt with 3/4 sleeves and a bracelet would look fantastic. Keeping more of the volume on the bottom.

And I agree with Robin, get some nice walking shoes. There are some great looking comfy ones now a days.

I suppose I am more of a T shape but my shoulders aren't massive. Obviously a little larger than your average girl but not massive.

When I go out it will be to a restaurant than a couple of bars. So am I right to think about building my look around the skirt as it is so nice? Though obviously I still want a nice top with or without a cardigan etc?

I will probably wear some sort of feminine bosy shaper too just to give me that little extra womanly shape.

I think it's fine to build your outfit around the skirt. Like Ceit suggested, check out Angie's post on banded tops and skirts.

Gorgeous skirt!

Here is the link to the article everyone is mentioning. For a restaurant and bar outing, I think a navy or ink blue top would be really nice. I think those colors look really elegant together and seem more fashionable and creative than all-black.

That top would be lovely with the skirt. That shape is very much what Angie has been featuring with full skirts.

I like your top! But I wonder if the cut-outs will emphasize your shoulders which you may want to play down.....

I agree that the top looks like it would be a gorgeous colour for you. You look like you would do well in most jewel tones, given your hair and eyes. Depending on your natural shoulder line it might emphasize your shoulders, but then again the skirt has some volume which could help balance the look. I think it's a beautiful look, and something that you will likely be able to feel confident in.

If you lived in my town, I would invite you over to try things on. I am responsible for one of my friends first exploration into the world of crossdressing. Since then, he has embraced it enthusiastically, and always looks fantastic.

We were going to an AIDS fundraiser one evening years ago, and of course the ladies in our party offered to dress up the guys and do their makeup. In years past there had always been crossdressing/drag contests involving the audience members. Not that we anticipated that when we were getting dressed, but my friend is an exhibitionist, so of course he has to get on stage. He won the "most heinous" award in one of my old matching knit skirt and top combos. Hooray for him, but maybe that was a sign that I should get rid of that outfit!

In any event, I wish you a wonderful "first night out" as your feminine self. Now I'm going to look at that skirt and let you know if I have any ideas.

OK, I love that skirt. That is something I would totally buy for myself.

Since the skirt is flowy and has some volume, I would pair it with something more fitted on top. I would either go all black, or pair a jewel tone with a black fitted jacket or sweater on top. Look for a smooth, dressy knit with a bit of spandex. I'm thinking of the sweaters I've bought for myself at Ann Taylor Loft. Seems like they always have an assortment of stretchy, dressy knits. For shoes, either black boots or booties, or else a shoe with a bit of an edge. Textured tights would look good with this look. Either go with black, or if you pick a color for your top, see if you can find something that harmonizes with that color. Don't go with a thick texture, though! I'm thinking of something that allows your legs to show through.

Hahaha....after writing all that, I decided to read the comments above and I see you are going with a fuller blouse. It's lovely! But maybe my advice will still be useful, since I'm sure you will want different options to go with that skirt.

Do you have a posse' of friends to go with you? Maybe you could start the evening by getting ready with them. Getting dressed up with girlfriends can be as much fun as the night out itself. And having them there to help you fine tune your look will make you feel more confident.

Oh, I missed that your shoulders aren't so broad. You are lucky in that your feet aren't that big and will fit into women's shoes.
