Pixie, specs and earrings? ETA Update at the end

I have a bit of an earring situation (that sounds ridiculous). With the short hair and new specs I don't like how most of my earrings look on me. I definitely don't like anything dangly and most studs look very "square" to my eye. At the moment I'm wearing small titanium piercing labrets as the everday choice. I can sleep with them and don't even notice I'm wearing them. I also have a second hole in each lobe, but I can't comfortably wear anything in those. Unfortunately I didn't have them pierced professionally and unlike the first ones the second ones are a bit scarred. I got the first ones with six and the second ones with fourteen btw.

So these small studs are fine I guess, but also a bit boring. But anything bigger (something like my pearl studs) makes me feel too classic - just waiting for someone to say ma'am, I guess. Any ideas? I definitely don't want to go with completely bare ears. Two friends suggested getting my cartilage pierced, but I'm not sure about that...

My ear is red in the pic because I tried to get a stud through that second hole - ouch.

I just went on an Etsy earring binge as part of filling out some of my color capsules. I don't like heavy earrings, but I wear a lot of short drops. Nothing boho, just a bit of glass or metal on a short drop.

What about a small hoop? Most of those are really mounted on a post like a stud. I got a pair from a maker in Israel.

I also saw a lot of seaglass studs that had a more organic, not round pearl shape, as I was shopping. use "beach glass" or "seaglass" or "recycled glass" in the search. I got a pair made from a recycled Skyy vodka bottle that are dang cool and only $8.

With similar hair to yours, and a sometimes-glasses wearer, I totally agree with not wearing big earrings with glasses . Right now, I am loving the trend in mis-matched studs, funny little shapes in gold and silver (right now I'm wearing a pair of an X and an 0 gold studs) ear cuffs, and "crawlers" or whatever they're called. There are lots of really interesting options out there at every price point and I'm finding it a really easy way to add some trend to my look.

I can totally relate to this Astrid - I no longer wear earrings at all with my short hair and glasses. I have a narrow face and I just find the earrings coupled with glasses that are a bit of a focal point, it's too much going on, you know?

I do like the look of the small studs - very pretty. I'm afraid I have no other advice though - I find jewelry choices to be so incredibly personal.

Astrid, I love small studs with a pixie - it looks so feminine and pretty to me. Perhaps you could try small studs with a little more animation or detail to them ... Or else a very small, dainty drop?

Thanks Rambling Ann! I do like hoops only if they're basically hugging the ear, I don't think anything bigger suits me... Glass and an organic shape sounds great, but I definitely need high quality earrings. I can't wear cheap earrings at all, I definitely need titanium or better quality silver or gold. I'm a bit sensitive, also with my skin in general.

Lisa, that sounds lovely! I agree, mismatched is good. I wouldn't wear two earrings on each side anymore either...

Thanks Shannon - yes I totally understand. I'd be tempted to just leave them out too, but I already wear so little jewelry that I feel like I need something there. And I'm used to it I guess.

Thanks Torontogirl! Yes, I'd definitely like some ear adornment with the pixie... I do think that something like your picks would be too classic, though.

I wouldn't get your cartilage pierced, and I wouldn't bother opening up the second holes, but obviously, that is totally just my personal preference for a clean earlobe look.

What about some messy-ball-of-yarn silver or gold earrings?

Thanks Smittie. I could see the cartilage piercing with a very pared down style or with something more special and then nothing else. I like the look when it's the only thing you're wearing, like in the picture below. But I'm not a fan of the multiple piercing look either. I don't think I want the second holes back, although they're still rather visible. I do like the earrings you linked to, for someone with long hair. With the short hair they remind me too much of those Tiffany knot earrings my Oma used to wear...

Don't get me wrong, I like them! I could totally see myself with a necklace with that silvery ball of yarn as pendant. But I guess for earrings the assocciations are the wrong ones, for me personally. Oh and I just grabbed the first pic that hadn't a helix plus a lot of other stuff going on...

Hi Astrid. How about the type that goes up your ear? They have a little more presence but with out being too "blingy". I have a pair with little pearls connected. Attached a find just as a representation of the style. There are all kinds of options to pick from if you like it.

These are the hoops I bought, which are just over a half inch/maybe 1.5 cm across.

And a vast array of seaglass studs on sterling silver.

I also discovered a number of nice earrings labeled as "men's earrings" on Etsy which weren't dangly or huge. Like these triangle earrings. I wouldn't say they weren't for girls

I really wanted these but had already ordered plenty.

Astrid, I am a 60 yr old. I like to think my style is classic, with an artistic bent. I guess I am a little rate. I have (had) numerous ear type piercings.
I totally get what you are saying.
I think you should get small tunnels. Not those gaping holes lots of men with dreds get. Just the smallest ones. They have some really cute tunnel earings. I think it would take your classic style up a notch into "the danger zone".
Also, when they are small they do shrink back, so, should you have any remorse, you have recourse... lol .. sorry ...

Totally understand! With my sporty life, constantly changing earrings was becoming a chore. And I've lost a few delicate pieces down the drain, when I wasn't being careful. With mid length hair, I put in a small gold ring that circled just below my earlobe. Had it for a year+, but it didn't look right with my current 'pixie' style cut 'round the ear. I picked up a pair of studs with sleeper backs (the kind that don't pull off easily) that look like small diamonds, but are really fakes...cubic zirconia, I think.

I've had them in since just before Christmas. Some folks noticed, but thought DH Had given me diamonds! LOL! I actually have grown to like the little bit of bling, and wouldn't want to go bare eared.

60. Classic preppy casual style. Short dark hair (not as short as yours, but it's been that short in the past.) I wear glasses. Every single day for the past 18 years I have worn the same pair of earrings: 1/2 inch platinum hoops with channel-set diamonds. My husband gave them to me as a wedding gift. I am not kidding that I wear them with everything, to do anything. I wore them to work at a university PR office, to kayak in the ocean in Alaska, to hike the Grand Canyon, to my wedding, to football games, to run 1/2 marathons. They are my signature look. I have lots of other earrings, collected before I got married. These, however, fit me and my life. I think if you ever land on the perfect pair, you will know it.

I have always had very short hair and my earrings of choice are tiny hoops or ear hugger hoops, which are my daily earring. A good quality pair of tiny hoops are relatively inexpensive and can be left in comfortably forever! I never remove mine I personally prefer gold, but I collected an example for you!

Reading with great interest. After years of just wearing studs, I am on a big earrings kick. But I only wear glasses while reading (since the lasik). I love the idea of some of the newer small styles as linked above such as front back, and creepers or whatever you call them. I would not pierce more body parts, but perhaps I am just a wimp.

I have stopped wearing earrings for the most part when I switched to wearing glasses nearly full time. My ears have grown so reactive to any metal that I court infection when I wear earrings. When I do, I have to be very careful, and I think that they look best when I'm wearing contacts instead. On me, I feel like dangly earrings and glasses are too much. (I can't wear studs-I find them painful-but I like yours.)

Rambling Ann, thanks! I agree that there is lovely stuff on Etsy, but even sterling silver doesn't always work for me. I have phases where even those irritate my ears. I think I'll keep looking for something in titanium. I'm doing very well with my current studs, absolutely no problems so far.

Donnat, thanks! I have to say I'm not a fan of big tunnels, you see a lot of those here in Berlin, same as other piercings and tattoos. I've read that the biggest you schould go if you definitely want them to close up again is 6mm. Not sure that makes much of a difference to normal earrings...

Carla, that sounds lovely! I've gotten used to wearing the labrets which are so comfortable, not sure I want to go back to normal studs with the usual back closures. I always found those irritating, I definitely couldn't wear them all the time!

Missey, I have similar ones to the ones you posted in silver, but they are too big for my taste. Maybe if they were truly hugging... I'm not tall and have small ears so rings need to be quite tiny to be snug.

Thanks Shevia. The idea of piercing doesn't worry me much - we are in Berlin after all and you can have it done professionally by people who have a lot of experience, unlike in the backwaters at home. One of the first names you stumble across when you google is actually just a short walk away from home. But I worry it's just a belated impulse - catching up on my teenage years so to speak. I remember I always wanted to have my cartilage pierced and my parents didn't allow it. My friends who suggested it both are thinking about their first tattoo right about now, for them a piercing is kind of kindergarten. I wouldn't get a tattoo myself btw, even though I admire a lot of the art that you can get in the studios.

Thanks Kari! Yes I can definitely relate. I often find normal studs painful as well. Have you tried piercing studs instead? With flat back and made in titanium, I love mine. I think what to do about the earrings wouldn't bother me so much if I wouldn't wear specs all the time. But I'm definitely not starting with contact lenses, I can't stand them.

I stopped wearing earrings for several years, then worked to redo my piercing last year. Then I cut my hair shorter and stopped wearing earrings for a few months. I tried studs a couple of days ago and the piercing had started to close. I'd like to maintain the piercing and option to wear earrings, so I found this post super helpful in considering different options.

This is interesting. Since I cut my hair, I've been wearing my bigger earrings MORE, not less. I love that they now show, and become more prominent in my outfit. It really IS a matter of personal preference isn't it.
And my weekend/vacation/I don't feel like wearing earrings, earrings are small silver hoops. Comfortable and they stay in.

I have never seen earrings that go up your ear like Donna posted. Very cool.

I've been browsing piercing shops mostly so far, for comfort reasons... I've found the mismatched but matching studs below in the store where I got the helix picture above from. They're small, less than a centimetre diameter. Not sure if they might be too colorful IRL? The butterfly might be a bit juvenile. They're the same length/thickness as my current studs.
(Oh and I saw that they have the piercing I posted above with grapes... love it.)

Most stuff in those stores isn't my thing at all btw - heaps of skulls and vodoo dolls and zombie cats and fluorescent spikes... And the christian cross.
