Picture Perfect Challenge - Winter 2013 - Day 1

I took these shots out in the country on my walk yesterday. As you can see it was beautiful in Leicestershire. I am wearing my staple black leggings and T. Simple, comfortable and easy to go from a walk to daywear with a change of jacket.

I took my cue from Abbey Road, literally. I mulled over tonal dressing and zebra stripes... but blocky shapes are much too mod for my overall style, so I softened the 'stripes'. As for the suits, this is as dressy as my very small wardrobe gets for a trip to the hairdresser. At least I got in the asphaalt grey.

My hair is still wet and I'm pretty exhausted, but I'm determined to do all the days, so here's my outfit. I started with my bootcuts and combined them with the striped top because of the zebra stripes. The white scarf is new and was sent to me by Ornella, I added it for a more tonal look. I thought about going simply with the striped shirt on its own, but then I layered the green cardigan over it for warmth (I think it echoes the green of the trees nicely). Last addition was my flower ring to pick up that beautiful blue of the sky.

Wow, these are already exciting! Carter, a family connection! Moni, you look positively elegant (and so great to see you, by the way). And VenusCow, I love your walking shots! Great idea.

Here's my interpretation. Like ManidipaM, I let the zebra stripes guide me, and pulled this skirt out of storage to wear with tights. Denim shirt as my tribute to George (the one I had a crush on). Also wearing my "blackbird" necklace and my beloved Beatle booties.

I think the Beatles are my biggest style crush ever.

(And, I wore this yesterday, so it's a slight cheat. I think I'll do a second version inspired by this album cover today.)

Here's mine (with text from my wiw post)

I was inspired by the colors: blue sky, black road, with white stripes, as well as by the attire: flared pants, bare feet and white shoes.

So I wore a light blue shirt (new to me) and black flared jeans with off-white sparkly flats that felt just a little festive and are almost my "nude". I topped it off with my black/white striped bag and white coat.

These are great outfits! So many of us seem to be inspired by the stripes of the crosswalk.

Amiable - that is a great coat!

I also wore black and white stripes. The wide black and white stripes of this top reminded me of the cross-walk in the foreground of the photo.

What I saw was: black, white, denim, stripes. Easy

They all come together in an outfit which is exactly the same one as what I wore the day before in my Flavia series, except that I swapped the black turtleneck for the white one and I chose the striped scarf to echo the crossing.

Putting this outfit was so much fun and I actually ended up playing with my wardrobe and exploring the power of a formula. More about that in separate post.

I saw that fabulous white suit on John! I don't have a white jacket that's appropriate for December, so I substituted a denim-blue jacket as an homage to George over there on the other end. And of course I had to wear my white shoes even though it might be a little seasonally confused. They're winter white: That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Bella, these are such fun challenges and everyone looks wonderful.
I saw an opportunity to do tonal white inspired by John's suit, but also wanted to incorporate the crossing stripes. I'm not sure that this is working as well as I'd hoped.

The outfit I had originally intended had the shape of their suits - fitted pants with flares, swingy jacket. But the pants and jacket are spring colors, silky fabrics, and it is a rainy day.

So here is what I wound up with. I thought the skirt sort of echoes the crosswalk and the road behind it. And the (wrinkled, yikes!) trench is a nod to the swingy jacket. Not pictured are gloves and a scarf, tbd.

Bella, can I just thank you again for doing this? And Ornella for getting on Bella's case so she did? You lovely ladies totally short-circuited my plans to slob around in sweatpants on our 10th wedding anniversary. The old ball-and-chain claims he doesn't notice but I suspect he thanks you too.

This is SO much fun. Everyone looks so fab and happy. I was hoping to see the flares and Beatle boots come out, and some tonal (pseudo)suits. But my, you ladies are leaving my expectations in the dust. And am amused--and reassured--that so many people went zebra crossing stripey as well!

Astrid, you don't mind me singling you out for the sheer detail and poetic lightness of your outfit, do you?

MaryK, LOVE the bookending of the Beatles in one outfit. And ha, yes, the pose. Hubby wanted me to walk too, heh--waving to Venus Cow as well--but I was too chicken!

Such fun to see Ceit and Joy one after the other. So similar and so emphatically different and individual! Great retro-contemporary renditions both.

Carter, you are totally rocking the retro silhouette. WOW!

And such fun to see my fellow stripers wearing them each a different way: Suz (yay, those boots, like I hoped!), Amiable (FAB coat and atta'bag!), Ornella (wow, the accessories have it!).

When I saw this cover, I immediately took notice of three things: the painted stripes on the pavement, the colors, and the easy flares the guys are wearing. I love stripes and knew I wanted to feature them in my outfit. I originally planned a nod to the flared pants with my bootcut jeans, but with the navy sweater it was way too much dark blue. Instead, I opted for my new olive skinnies to echo the green of the trees. The outfit needed a feminine detail of some sort to make it "me" and I figured my ruffled yellow handbag ought to do the trick. I'm batting for Team Wear today, as this outfit features three Thanksgiving weekend purchases.

I took my inspiration from the zebra stripes too - nothing terribly original there. But what was funny was that I landed up unintentionally wearing two different tops with stripes. I woke up really early on my first unemployed day to take the kids to school and I grabbed this very oversize and stretched and creased top. Don't worry - I wasn't planning on getting out my car!

Then I met some girlfriends for breakfast at a very hipster spot and I wore the same pants but with the black and white stripey high low top.

I just love The Beatles and this was probably the day I was looking most forward to... Because I love stripes

Another addition to the stripe parade! What struck me most was: the relaxed menswear all in neutrals, all of the linear elements in the pic, and the almost sepia tinted feel to the colours thanks to the film used.

Sadly, it was too hot here for a jacket, and I don't own any flares, so for menswear I went with pleated trousers. I added a striped top (for the linear bit) with a sepia colour background, semitucked for a bit of interest, and kept everything else streamlined a la their suits. I can already tell this is going to be a bit of a challenge for me! I'll be back to comment on everyone else's pics soon, just need to strike some stuff off my to-do list first.

Great interpretations. The walking photos are fun so I did one too, but I was walking the wrong way so I flipped it.
I was drawn to the long jackets, the flared trousers and the high contrast. I would have worn white boot cuts and a white jacket but It didn't feel right for the weather.

I dressed up if I had been a pedestrian across the road in 1969 A geometric "mod" dress from Zara, navy tights, brown Shooties and my retro-inspired Guess bag. I probably should have worn booties but I don't have brown ones.
