Here we are already at Day 4. Where did the week go?
Today's inspiration is The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.

Okay I'll go first but full disclosure, I've never read any of Tolkien's books or seen any of the movies either because I'm not much into fantasy fiction.
However, I do love the colour combinations in this cover, totally my colour palette.

I started with this midi-length denim skirt that I bought second hand years ago, its slight fluted hem-line kind of echos the pattern of the mountain peaks. Added a green/white ditsy pattern top to represent the forest and a white cropped denim jacket like the white on the mountain tops.

Somehow I didn't even notice that little dot of red on the cover until now. Haha, perhaps I subconsciously didn't want to wear red again.

Ooh I get to be first?! A favourite book!

The Black Watch trousers with green and navy were the obvious choice.

On top: I do have a brighter green sweater, closer to the shade in the inspiration pic, but I'm saving that for tomorrow. Besides, it's Mirkwood, right? So dark and gloomy fits.

I wished I had a way to reference the sharp mountain peaks ... Then I opened my scarf drawer. This shibori scarf, created by my daughter, best matches the colour way (and the zigzags are sharper than maybe shows with how I tied it). But the other scarf is a close contender... I love the graphic white outlining, but overall I thought it too light and bright for the vibe.

Green striped socks, for the graphic element again, and because why not? But I'll be in boots all day, because snow is coming, so noone else will see them.

Hair worn straight and loose, the way I and everyone else wore it when I read it in middle school, and all through the 70s that followed. (Although I'll now tie it back for work and mask.)

Have fun, everyone! The road goes ever on and on....

I saw mountains right away and thought of the EBtee with snowcapped mountains and sun. I do not have any green footwear so wore black and white loafers to represent the water in the lower picture. I wore a red jacket to show the red sun. Would white or black in a jacket be better? White pearls represent the snow. Would snowflake earrings be better. They are silver and sparkly. The green pants represent the bottom of the trees. The small bag is black and white. Earrings are more pearls to look like snow. I will take a photo later after DH showers

Dee, well done! I like the midi skirt with the top and jacket. Nice proportions.

Two possibilities, really. Number one, Bilbo runs out the door without even a pocket handkerchief, and number two, Bilbo goes out to dinner at a nice Italian restaurant with a friend. I added a tiny bit of red since Dee and Joy noticed the red sun (I didn't see it AT ALL).

When I saw today's book cover I immediately thought of this jacket. It is not exactly similar colors, but I guess the mountains reminded me of the pattern on the jacket. Today was a very warm spring day here, lots of flowers everywhere, so I enjoyed supporting this springy jacket, which I hadn't worn in a while.

I was inspired by the colours, and angles and lines, and the characters of The Hobbit.

Despite chartreuse being my colour of the year, I own almost nothing green, and especially in my cool weather closet. And today is a very cool spring day. But dressing a bit like Bilbo and his mates, I have cropped trousers (which actually have aqua checks running through the grey), wooly socks (I think they must have worn sock and boots when bare feet became impossible, no?) with a triangular mountain-like pattern in grey, white, charcoal, and green, a white shirt and grey vest, whose neckline echoes all the angles. Red comes in via my boots, my puffer, and my jacket. The strap of the bag mimics the intricacy of the lines in the cover image.

Today was pretty easy for me since I love The Hobbit and everything Tolkien. Also, the weather was a lot easier to work with than earlier in the week, and suited my mood and the outfit I was leaning toward. Disclaimer: This outfit is a bit more "hobbit lass" than literal book cover.

I love green, so green was a natural to lean into. The linen circle skirt came first; the rustic texture of linen and shade of green is quite hobbity. With it I put a long sleeve blouse of textured cotton with blue and green embroidery. The embroidery is angular, reminiscent of the Dwarvish script on the cover border, and the lines of the trees and mountains.

I diverged from the strict color scheme by using a cognac leather belt instead of black or blue. Wide belts are my favorite with this outfit formula, which is one of my few "Warm But Not Too Hot" options. I like to get the wear in while I can! The belt suits the rustic hobbit feel, with its natural color and whipstitching.

To complete in the morning, I wore soft, lightweight green boots (we'll say they're Elvish, sort of) and a green cashmere wrap that was a brilliant estate sale find. When it warmed up, I ditched shawl, tights, and boots and added green sandals for a walk.

For jewelry, I wore my favorite silver hoops, which have a zigzag edge, and Galadriel's ring, Nenya. There is a large CZ stone encased under the silver flower.

Ginger, I had the ankle-height version of those same green boots but they left the building in a closet purge last fall. I was kicking myself this morning about it for sure! You look like the perfect Hobbit lass!

Okay, I have THREE versions!

1. I was faffing about in my dressing gown and realized I was already dressed for the challenge! I feel like the socks really capture the pattern on the border in the picture.
2. I didn't leave the house in this, but it's an outfit I wore all the time when I was working. The red backpack is for the sun in the picture, also because the Hobbit is going on a journey and will need to pack his stuff. Photo 4 is the accessories -- green earrings, and the etched gold bangle reminded me of the One Ring in the later books.
3. This is what I'm actually wearing today. You can't see it but the sneakers are Addidas with three black stripes, to continue the black-white theme.

This is such a fun day! When I first saw the pic I didn't think I'd be able to put together even one outfit, and look what happened!

I am not knocking it out of the park on fashion but I think I deserve extra credit for going out for a trudge in the Lonely Mountains today. Color wise I went more with the bleaker Smaug-ridden cover of my edition of the Hobbit, which I realized that I have owned for 50 years and paid £0.60 for at some bookshop in London when I was seven.

Thank you, Angie! My liner is just a single thin line at the base of the lashes. Maybe the shape of my hooded lids makes it look 60s? I’m definitely helping my bangs curl out and away, though! It gives the curl something to do and keeps them mostly out of my eyes.

Serendipitously, today I kind of match the theme. The dark gray top is not super warm, but it’s not exactly a pullover sweater either. So to add an extra layer, I put on a new Old Navy shortsleeved tee of dark green and black print. I didn’t even think the neckline would show, but since it did, I have the requisite green, gray, and white accent on shoes.

I'm back with two outfits, for my fantasy day and real day. I chose a green and gray theme. I wanted to throw some white in there, but didn't figure out that part. I used dark olive or forest green corduroys and a medium gray merino turtleneck as the base. I added a blazer, which this cover made me think of because of the peaks: translated into wardrobe-speak, I thought of peaked lapels. I would wear the blazer if I were going out this evening. But as much as I wish I didn't "save the good stuff for special occasions," I just don't sit around the house in a blazer. So my second version is with a dark green puffer vest.

So, I was in a rush this morning, got the photos but no time to post.
Fun fact, I won my copy of The Hobbit in a poetry competition run by the local library when I was 10. Mine has the same cover as UmmLila’s but is more battered! It started a lifelong love of Tolkien, so much so that my first car, a Riley Elf, was given the name Luthien Tinuviel Elf, Luth for short. Number plate was EW718 which stood for Elfwoman in my 21-year-old mind.
It’s now lunchtime, here are the pics. No mountains but some hills on my tunic and dark green duster coat over. It’s a bit cold for the sandals today but oh well.

Oh wow, I love everyone's fabulous outfits and wish I was awake enough to comment on each one. I went with a chevron patterned top which reminded me of the mountain tops. I picked the sneaker shoes because the soles are dark green, as are my earrings. Sorry for the absolutely terrible condition of the mirror in the thrift shop!

Hey all. I was looking forward to this Challenge (specifically Days 1 & 2), but it's taken me all the way to Day 4 to get organized enough to take photos. My take on The Hobbit book cover. I read the Lord of the Rings series, then went back and read The Hobbit--it's been awhile though. Thanks for taking a peek.

The color and texture of my self-made lantern pants reminds me of the textured mountains on the cover. My t-shirt from the Ft. Worth Stockyards, also has peek and star designs... Oh, also, like the ankle boots with the length of the pants. Have a great day!
