Am I the only one quite underwhelmed and uninspired by this photo? I want women in these positions to be aspirational and better than the average person - not looking like they are dressed to go grocery shopping . I don’t get it .

Interesting question. I quite like the woman in the suit to the left of EA and the woman in the far right with the long wide trousers. The woman next to her bookends her hair and her boots perfectly - as a matter of fact there is a lot of matchy, matchy stuff going on that still manages to look just thrown on. In short, they certainly look better than the grocery shoppers in my area !

I like the wide leg pant suit too - but most of these outfits look deliberately unpolished , which is curious . I don’t get a professional vibe at all , which you do see from the American crew .

It doesn't bother me. I don't know which one is Emmanuelle Alt anyway, though I have heard of her. Aren't they just women dressed to do a job which involves showcasing others not themselves?
And I agree with Shevia, they look better than grocery shoppers near here.

All the women wearing black strike me as professional. I wish all the women wearing blue denim had chosen a darker wash. I wish the woman wearing chucks chose a more refined shoe (and better posture.) I sort of wish they had done more with their hair and makeup, but maybe because I’m American and it was literally front page news when Alicia Keyes went to events without makeup on.

Lisa I 100% agree with you. I find this predictable and think given the amazing clothing at these ladies disposal, not to mention their stunning looks, that they could have much more fun in styling themselves.

I love how Anna Wintour (immaculately polished), Carine Roitfeld (rock and roll) and Anna Delio Russo (maximal Euro) always look styled, which added to the mystique of Vogue.

Well, I like Emmanuelle Alt’s outfit, the coat on the far left, and think the women in black have some style... but I do think they are way underdressed for fashion week. The shows are a chance to have some fun without looking like you’re dressed up with nowhere to go. I’d be a bit more excited than jeans and Uggs.

On the other hand, I suppose it’s a bit of a palette cleanser. The styling at the shows this past decade have seemed a little desperate, if I’m to be honest and perhaps a little catty...

I guess It fits with the image of "French girl" which has been portrayed in the last years. The no-makeup makeup. Hair like they Just rolled out of bed. Outfit which looks like it was just composed of things scattered on the floor, but which was in reality well thought out (Shevia notice the matchy parts).
I actually think it's refreshing after years of people choosing improbable outfits only to be noticed at FW. And this girls are there to work. Plus, I like the idea of being a neutral background to showcase other's work.

On the one hand, I like that they look like normal people BUT representing Vogue, I feel like they should've and could've done better.

As far as grocery shopping goes, they look like Publix shoppers to me. Too young for Ingles, too cool for Kroger, and too normal for the Walmart.

But I think they did intend to appear aspirational and better than the average person - in a Ralf Lauren magazine's back page kinda way! I think it's the matchy matchy shevia pointed out that makes it feel so generic. Each outfit individually shows some level of ingenuity but it's the group pic that looks like variations of the same collection at your local superstore.

I definitely see what you mean. The plaid belted cape-jacket jumped out at me because everything else was so neutral in color and style. All the looks are perfectly fine but I wouldn’t necessarily think of them as aspirational either.

Perhaps this is intended as a counterpoint to the increasingly look-at-me crazy stylings of some fashion blogger and wannabe-insider types attending past fashion week events? I’m sure this was all quite deliberate styling. It does sort of look like someone circulated a memo beforehand.

I think it’s the lightwash denim and tan boots thing that looks casual.
And it’s also that I think of “ business casual ” and even “ fashion “ as more formal than , haha, real fashion types do! And of course there’s the French bed- head thing. And that reall, they can wear whatever they want.

What I winder is, do they intend to send any message at all and if so, what is it? Meaning, does there attire and the new photo ops ( Instagram, etc) help sell magazines or their advertising clients clothing or get new client? Or are they truly just doing their own thing?

I don't really follow the Paris Vogue scene so I'm wondering what they have worn to previous fashion weeks. But it does seem like they are dressed for a 'normal' work day. Interesting for sure.

or it was a deliberate 'nothing to see here' way of dressing...given that A) they are working in an industry that is contracting more and more very day...B)they are working in an industry that is under a lot of scrutiny from the MeTo movement...C)they are generally all thin white women in an industry that is being called out for its lack of presentation of people of color and size.....

I feel they should show more individuality. They don’t seem to ever show any. It is always these group outfits where everyone is coordinated with everyone else.

I saw that photo on Instagram yesterday, too, and at first I thought, well, it's kind of nice to see that the editorial team of French Vogue looks no better than the rest of us. But, then, I did wonder -- if magazine editors can't dress in high style for fashion week, why even bother to have fashion?

Lisa - exactly. Sarah Harris from British Vogue is one of my favourites, and she dresses and looks far , far different/better than this crew. God, I sound like my mother. "comb your hair and put on some lipstick for crying out loud ".

Interesting how straggly most of them look - hair, posture. But they are certainly advocating for what's trending: lighter wash, Western look. I like the look of lighter wash denim, myself (though don't own any) but I there's hardly any way to make them part of a polished look. Maybe accompanied by same shade luxe items in a monochrome outfit. This is a very taking-a-backseat bunch of looks. And I wouldn't be able to tell they were French without the caption.

I remember reading a long time ago, when the "street style" was a big thing, and how the fashion press and industry people went to so many shows that they had to dress somewhat practically. They didn't stand around outside the shows preening.

There's a NPR program called Hidden Brain. It's almost an hour, but this is a good episode because it talks about the Aspirational Class. Where they don't show their class status by their dress (eg handbags), but what they do and have the luxury of time to do.
