Thanks everyone for all your styling ideas for that black burnout velvet top that we were discussing earlier this week! I had a chance to play in my closet for a while tonight and here are the results.
My apologies for the photos -- I know they are dark! Unfortunately I just don't have a great setup for outfit photos. I cranked up the exposure on some of them and also provided closeups for some -- hopefully that will help illustrate the mixes of pattern and texture.
These are more-or-less everyday or elevated-everyday outfits. I didn't really investigate markedly dressy possibilities since my lifestyle is casual. You can see that I am basically treating this top as a patterned/textured jersey, even though it is made of woven material. Lots of dark romance, some cottagecore and equestrienne, a little bit of 90s.
I really like some of these options and really don't care for others at all. I will try to keep my descriptions rather neutral as I am curious about your reactions!
1-3: This is how I've worn this piece in the past: tall boots, skinny pants (here ponte leggings, though I think I've worn it with jeans as well), layered over a silk jersey (the velvet top is quite cropped), cardi. I know the cardi looks gray in the pics -- it's a really interesting dusty lavender shade IRL.
4-5: tall boots, midaxi skirt (this is linen in an ink blue + black plaid), pattern mixed with a flowered cardi.
6: same base but with a solid black cardi with a kind of longer blazer-like cut.
7-9: same base but with a navy Aran cardi and blue/white jewelry. I have a thing for navy+black at the moment, so I was trying to milk that here.
10-11: playing with texture. with black corduroy pants, patent stompy boots, nordic patterned cardi
12: my idea here was to try to lean into the desaturated-ness of the top by pairing it with a charcoal cardi, gray jeans, and bone ankle boots
13-14: with loose jeans and a black watch plaid tunic worn open as a duster.
15: can I dress it wayyyyyy down? The olive midaxi skirt here is made of sweatshirt fleece!
16-17: double velvet: with plaid velvet pants and the same black cardi from #6.
18-20: layered under a pullover two ways: with either loose jeans and ankle boots, or skinnies and tall boots.
21-23: with a fair isle skirt, burgundy ankle boots, big black cardi for drama, amber jewelry to pick up the yellow in the skirt.
BONUS:
24: two black cats decided to be matchy-matchy with the clothes scattered on the bed.
25: tortie thought some pattern was needed!
26: ahhh magic, the clothes have been whisked away but the cats remain.
Thanks for looking! Grateful for any observations you have to share or remixes you care to suggest.
