Today we are returning home from our first airplane travel in at least two years, and I’m thinking about what I’d forgotten about dressing for travel and what I got right on this trip.

Successes included packing lightly enough that my bags weren’t inconvenient, having comfortable shoes, and my extremely functional travel outfit!! (More below). Failures included packing jeans that were uncomfortably tight and forgetting to pack a pair of joggers for hanging around the house.

BUT my travel outfit was incredible. The first pic is day one, arriving in Maine. The second pic is our last day, which we unexpectedly spent in Boston. When we got up Saturday morning, we planned to drive ten minutes to return the rental car, then fly home to Florida. BUT our flight was canceled. The airline sent us by taxi to a Portland bus terminal, and we had a 2.5 hour ride to Boston, then an Uber to a hotel, and then an unexpected day and a half to sightsee in Boston. We ended up walking for hours! It was a delightful detour, and this outfit kept me comfortable and presentable through all the changes of plans. And attendant surprises including staunching blood with the hem of my dress when my son cut his finger on a metal display sign. Yay to me for looking the same eight days- and many adventures- later!

Black isn’t my favorite, but it feels streamlined and fits in anywhere- if needed I could wear the dress to a formal-ish event I didn’t plan on.

So I’m keeping this as my designated travel outfit. It’s not exactly my daily-life look, but it’s a home run for travel. Wish I’d topped it with my denim jacket instead of the sweatshirt tied around my waist. I’d like a pop of color, but I don’t wear scarves. Maybe red tennis shoes next time?
