We’re watching right now and Chloe Zhao just won for best director. Earlier I looked at the NYT’s red (pink) carpet fashion and I was impressed by her sensible footwear and statement hair.

We were just admiring her outfit, footwear choice and no make up look.
always great to see an individual style that disregards the norms of the such events.

I think the only nominated movie we saw was Nomadland. It was filmed in our area (Empire). Boy was it ever depressing.

Actually that’s not true. Friday night we went to a small party (three couples, all vaccinated) to watch nominated shorts - live action and animated. I was very disappointed Opera (Korea) didn’t win. It was so very interesting. I could watch it over and over.

Soo... ok, I’ve gone and had a look at what people wore... and is it ok to say I feel there were a lot of odd dresses? Or maybe it’s that folks didn’t have the full battalion of dressers?

I have seen Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago Seven....

I will definitely catch up on the fashion.

There were some nominated films that I am sure would be wonderful but I chose not to watch as they were too grim....

Rachy, I think in years past, they looked fab because someone helped them with every little detail.

Sal, the little party we went to, we were going to watch the nominated short documentaries, but it got too late. My friend tried to watch them the next day, but they were too grim.

Unfortunately, I have no interest in watching Nomadland. Too grim. And The Father is too close to home.

Liked Judas and the Black Messiah, and The Trial of the Chicago Seven.

A Promising Young Woman was disappointing.

Want to see Minari, and The Sound of Metal,

Best Win of the Night: The Octopus Story. YOU MUST SEE IT. Greg's stomping ground, and where he grew up. It's absolutely mesmerizing, and I am elated for South Africa!

Second best wins: Tyler Perry for humanitarian efforts, and the organization too - name escapes me.

Outfits I liked:

I don't mind grim. It's a shot of reality and humility I feel I benefit from in many ways. We have Nomadland teed up to watch next - probably Tuesday night .

Kkards, yes to the little boy!!! The others are very good as well. I loved the acceptance speech of the actress who won supporting actress. I wonder if her speech is online. Dry humor.

Angie, I’d like to see the Octopus. If you get the chance, watch the animated short Opera, from Korea. It’s AMAZING. Nomadland was soooo depressing. Not grim, but sad and depressing. I only watched it because a lot was filmed in our area. The scenery is beautiful, though. Tyler Perry - what a great guy! He lives his beliefs. I’m not interested in the Madea films, unfortunately.

I liked Regina King’s gown. I thought the cape-let looked like a butterfly’s wings.

I don't recognize 90% of the people, but the diversity in terms of age, body shape, personal style is refreshing. Not 100% micro-managed images, but lots of talented people dressed up in their best for a special occasion. Lots of sensible shoes, dresses with sleeves. I like it. I hope this trend continues as far as award ceremonies go and that we are not immediately back to business as usual after the pandemic.

It looks like two trends are cutouts and massive wing things. Neither is to my taste. For the second year in a row, to my great surprise I liked the Chanel looks. I also think the Dior shoulder has to go, no one looks good in it.

Bella, Angie, in the old days, people wore their own clothes to the ceremony. I liked it better than them coming as walking advertisements. But that was in the days when people dressed up for ordinary occasions. People only wore jeans for horseback riding or panning for gold, I guess.

I loved Chloe Zhao's look, and of course Alan Kim in Thom Browne! I felt like Olivia Colman's dress wasn't properly tailored through the shoulders and bust. I was underwhelmed by most of the women's fashion, sadly, though it was delightful to see many men breaking free from the traditional black tux.

We have seen Nomadland (I didn't find it depressing, relatively speaking, i.e., relative to what's actually reality in the US right now; it was powerful, bittersweet, beautiful, touching), Judas and the Black Messiah (excellent performances by the two male leads in service to a brutal, painful period in US history), Sound of Metal (also excellent), and Another Round (Danish, won best foreign feature, also excellent!). Looking forward to watching Minari and The Father and The Octopus Story :). A Promising Young Woman is too close to my work--I study interpersonal violence--so I won't be watching.

Jonesy, it’s funny how we can watch some things but not others. Nomadland was sad to me. F McD and I are about the same age. So for her character to be forced to live in a van was sad to me. And I’m very glad I don’t have to. The Octopus documentary is on Netflix, I think.

Carla, I’m going to watch her film after hearing her speak last night. Apparently Brad Pitt was a producer, and she said where were you when we were filming?

I’m not familiar with Peter Francis, but he looks great in his outfit. It’s beautifully tailored. Jon Batiste also looked fab. I always enjoy him on Stephen Colbert’s show.

so many big sleeves-- I loved all the color, and several daring dresses I imagined were heavily in use with fashion tape (Amanda Seyfried's red gown)

we typically have an oscar party and try to watch as many films as possible, and vote for prizes. This year did watched most of them, (just our little party of 2) but I only got 5 correct on the ballot! so bad.

loved: Nomadland, the octopus teacher, Another Round, The White Tiger. The Sound of Metal--especially in that film we appreciated the diverse cast and the fact it was just normal people living their lives. The Father is on my list, by like others its close to home right now so that one is going to be tough

so many really strong documentaries--Crip Camp was really good. And the documentary shorts were intense, but I think so important to see. "A love song for Latasha" is beautiful and heartbreaking. "Burrow" is sweet and "Opera" is a visual feast--need to watch that one again as there are so many things going on simultaneously--

Crip Camp documentary on Netflix is a film to see. Judy Heumann is one of my sheroes. Her co-director had his tux custom made but I don’t know if he made it on the broadcast.
