I loved My Octopus Teacher so much! I can't recommend it enough. Other than that, the only movies we've seen with nominations were Soul (also highly recommended - I love Jon Batiste, and thought he looked terrific!) and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which was so hard to watch, but outstanding. I'm very much looking forward to Minari and Nomadland.

I applaud Bella's comments. I am attaching my favourite outfits below. There were several others I really loved except for the see-through or overly cut-out bottom half. Oh, and with my only reference point being 1989 - 1990, Trent Reznor has... changed.

Shevia, me too. I love getting recommendations.

Rebekah, we typically go to the local university to see the movie shorts. One time we saw a couple we knew from when our kids were in HS band. Well, it turns out they go see all the Oscar nominated films! All of them. That’s kind of like visiting all of the national parks, or all the states, but every year.

Donna, thanks for the recommendation.

Sarah, we watched it last night. I can’t believe how attached I became to an octopus.

Echo, those are lovely. I don’t like the gowns that are so revealing. I guess the women think it will help their careers, which is sad.

More love for My Octopus Teacher! What a fabulous film. I think we watched it on Netflix last summer when theaters were closed. I want to see Soul.

Joy, we saw the Octopus Teacher last night. I hadn’t heard of it until Angie recommended it. I guess there is a cost to watching nothing but murder mysteries during the pandemic. I want to see Soul, too. Jon Batiste is an incredible musician.

I looked at the pictures of the outfits - so diverse this year. Difficult to say what would be called "hit" or "miss" in our pandemic world.
"Mank" was the movie I really enjoyed watching last year - glad it got some recognition.

I like many of the men's looks more this year, from what I've seen so far. Just algo with the gowns.
I don't watch movies, but think I'd like My Octopus Teacher!

Slim Cat, I’ll check out Mank. His grandson, Ben, hosts movies on TCM.

Suntiger, you don’t watch movies?!!! Well no wonder you’re able to have so many interests. My Octopus Teacher is very fresh in my mind since I watched it last night on Netflix. Very moving.

Joy and JAileen, YAY!!!! Soooo glad you watched The Octopus Teacher

Sarah!!! HIGH FIVE!!!

We enjoyed Soul too.

Jonesy, interesting that we can't watch things that are too close to home....albeit the subjects are different......you get it.

Echo, many of your faves were my faves!

Angie, thank you for The Octopus Teacher recommendation. I really enjoyed it, and cared about it, too. They’re so interesting.

I hope The Father is huge. Somehow I don’t think it will be. Society quickly turns its head.
Many of us here certainly don’t need to watch it-or can’t- but the masses of the unaware, maybe some will open their eyes.
Or are there any left who have not encountered the growing epidemic of dementia?

Ophelia, I don’t need to watch it. My father was developing dementia toward the end of his life, although he died of cancer.

Sarah, I forgot that I saw Ma Rainey's Black Bottom! We watched it when it was first released, and that seems like a long time ago--Covid time is weird :). I thought Viola Davis' performance was astonishing and mesmerizing--I couldn't take my eyes off of her whenever she was on-screen. Chadwick Boseman was great as well.

Angie, yes, exactly! Everyone has their own specific tolerance level, grounded in all sorts of factors.
