ongoing quest for wedding outfits

Too many weddings this summer, and too many choices to make...

Recently I came across this glorious Halston Heritage tunic. There's no local NM for me to check the fit, but by the numbers I should be able to wear the XL. I'm considering ordering it to see..... the trouble is that it's not bra-friendly, and bras are a must for me.

Could it perhaps be layered over a tight-fitting top? I'm wondering if I can go column-of-black underneath, or column-of-ink?

Hi Jacquez --

Would a bandeau top (aka strapless bralette aka tube top) over your bra be enough coverage for you in the back?

That seems like a sleeker, easier option to me. You could try solid or lace that matches/tones in with your strapless bra color.

I would take the dress with you to a Nordstroms or other department store lingerie department and see what they would suggest. There are all sorts of things out there. You might even call or have an on-line chat with NM to find out what they are suggesting. You are not the only one who wants some support with this dress

Joy & Vix -- I wish with all my heart I could do those things. I'm VERY busty, with a small band size for my weight (despite being borderline-plus sized, my band size is 34).

The local Nordstrom does not carry any bras that fit me. There's a specialty shop about an hour away that might, but I mostly order bras from the UK and Poland to get a good fit. I could call that shop about their strapless selection and see how it goes, though! Worth a try.

My other option, which I've used in the past for bra-unfriendly stuff, is some kind of cover-up. I have a black cashmere bolero....... hm.

My girlfriend (a former model) swears by a duct tape bra for skimpy fashions like this. She's seriously done it at several fancy events. I've never tried it, just passing along information

I love this look!!

I wear a strapless bra and am relatively busty (34 or 36D) sized. I have a couple of tops of this shape and it works well as long as the top is not too tight...I see this might not work at the back, hard to tell, it might do so.

I think putting something over the top might be a challenge - the beauty of this is the line of the top.

When I first read this I thought it was *backless* -- hence the bandeau-over-bra rec -- but now see you don't mention the back.

Even if there's a racerback or something I don't see how you can make it work without at least a strapless unless you're comfortable with a lot less support than I am -- and since you're ordering the "good bras" I take it shape + support is on your mind!

Agree that the halter neckline is what you want to show.

Sometimes one has to admit defeat with a style. HH is tough for busty types...that braless small-bosom'd 70s muse is in their design DNA.

I love the top and think that to cover it up with a jacket would take away from the lovely lines of the top. I would try it with a strapless bra. As someone who is relatively flat chested, I don't even like going braless. I can totally understand why you want support.

I question if even a strapless bra will work, as the arm holes appear to be quite low cut.

It an amazing outfit, but my gut is saying it's going to be too difficult or impossible to make work, and am inclined to suggest keep looking.

hmmmm...between the bra issue and the color, i'm still in the camp of avoiding wearing white or cream to a wedding, unless of course, you are the bride.....i'd keep looking. sorry.

Its a very striking top (I really like it a lot) but I can see why you have questions about a bra. If I were to attempt it, I'd wear a strapless and backless long line bra. And yet, I'm not sure that would be a workable solution because of the draped style--it would be a shame to see lumps and bumps and ripples caused by the bra edges. And also--those bras are NOT comfortable IMO. Maybe you can try-on bras of this style at a local bridal shop. FWIW, I wear 30/32 DDD+, so I know where you are coming from...

Also, I think it's worth trying the cardigan and black pants combo. Although it would be a shame to lose some of the detail in the top, I think the right cardigan MIGHT work.

I think I'm going to give up on this tunic, sadly. I did some math with probable dimensions and coverage, and there's not enough across the front to look anything but weird on my chest.

Does leave me still in the middle of nowhere with wedding outfits!
