Carol you have already received much better advice than I could offer. Definitely consider two pairs - one dark to cover your bases and one lighter one that will be your surprise workhorse .

Thanks, Jaime! Now to find the legitimate contenders....

These are the Olive Fly’s I though might work in your wardrobe . No idea what your foot issues are though so can’t comment on fit etc .

Thanks, Lisa! I like that colour a lot! I need quite a bit of width in the forefoot and many fashion brands are a bit skimpy in that department. But, ya never know until you try...

I’m just throwing this out because I had such good luck with the Denver Hayes Quad Comfort combat boots I bought in 2019 and wore through F/W ‘19, ‘20, and ‘21. Comfortable out of the box, and worn for urban rambles and lots of other occasions, until they just wore out! I liked that they were very light weight.

They come in wide, and their wide round toe box was very accommodating of my wide forefoot with bunions. They are leather, and the lace up style has a zipper for easy on/off. They are not thick or fleece lined, but I used an alpaca footbed and wool socks for cold days, and extra comfort.

Might be worth checking out, and the price won’t break the bank.

More spendy, but definitely able to handle cold Canadian winters are boots by bulle. I have a pair of red ones (see finds) that I found at an independent shoe boutique in town. (Not refined enough to wear with a skirt, but check the threads linked to my finds to see how I’ve styled them with a variety of bottoms.] The toe box is slightly narrower than the Denver Hayes, but you might see if the brand is carried by an Indy boutique in your city?

Thanks for the suggestions, Carla! I do like your red boots. And I always forget about Mark's so I appreciate the recommendation.

ooh -- this is interesting. Little Burgundy exclusive colour in the Blundstone women's boot called 'oat' -- which sounds much less pinky to me than the Pearl. Might be worth a look.

I haven’t read all the responses but, if you want to wear the boots with skirts or dresses, I really think a high shaft lace up boot is that way to go. I like the Ecco Nouvelles in both colours.

Blundstone and similar styles (which I do wear with jeans) can make me feel self conscious about the size of my feet when wearing a skirt. Having big feet, I feel laces give the boot a better fit around my foot and leg and also create a vertical line which kind of negates the wideness of my foot.

Ooh those “oat” Blundstones are pretty ! I’ve had good customer service with Little Burgundy on line ordering .

Another pair in your colour

Nice! Thanks, Lisa!!

I agree, Brooklyn -- and of course, finding a boot that my foot likes AND that has a higher shaft is going to require nothing short of a miracle...

I have yet to wear the first boots due to weather, but they are Kork-Eaze, a comfort brand and apparently come in taupe if you click on the Find. Maybe since I’m short, really thick soled stompy boots can overwhelm me in certain outfits, particularly dresses. The second pair are Miz Mooz in green. That style comes in many different colors. The leather is quite soft.

So many great choices! If you can I would get 2 boots....Dark and light, as they are so different. I go round and round thinking I can have "One boot to rule them all" but in reality I wear boots almost daily, and have multiple pairs in the closet. But I do sometimes get in a rut and wear the same pair over and over (Black 550 Blundstones, talking about you)

I have the Doc Pascals in black, and can attest they are very soft leather and work with my fussy feet, so maybe they would work for you. and also the Uggs and Kenneth Coles from last year.

I too have been thinking about the Blundstones in Cream and the waterproofing is a bonus.

I came across these Vionic boots which I have no experience with, but the style is cool so thought Id share.

No great advice to offer, only my sincere thanks. Following this post has convinced me that I do not need a new pair of boots this winter.

(For what it’s worth, I think you should go for the pearl Blundstones. Again.)

How about dark and light, but the "dark" is not black?

Donna -- ooh - I like the shaft height of that Miz Mooz boot (and the colour). Kork-Eaze is new to me -- haven't seen it locally, but will be on the lookout now. I know what you mean about some boots just feeling overwhelming. I feel that way in my yellow Doc Martens. I love the colour, but they are so BIG and awkward.

Rebekah -- Yeah, it's a lot to ask of ONE poor boot, isn't it (although i am like you and often have a 'default' pair.) I like that Vionic boot! Will keep an eye out for anyone locally who might carry it... I hadn't really thought about UGG, either, but I see at least one story locally has a couple of options....

Approprio -- LOL!! As embarrassing as a repurchase could be, it's not out of the question. However, the "oat' colour option I just found looks like it might solve the colour dilemma by being a bit less pink... so in the running.

Stag -- I'd be open to that. I think much depends on what I can actually find. I think it's probably that I need one boot a bit dressier but not precious and one boot that can be a bit more casual/rugged.

I just want you to know that your headline about one boot to rule them all is hilarious, and I have been in a similar search (for a tan ankle boot that could look great in fall/spring but also have a realistic sole for winter) and I LOVE this group of enablers telling us that MORE BOOTS is the answer, because I am about to own not one but 3 pairs of tan ankle boots!

On that note, I have had these Blackstones for years for cozy winter walks:

and have these coming to me for everyday "throw them on on the way out the door"-wear:

and THESE to answer all the demands I laid out just now:

I'm delighted to have given you a laugh, Lesley! And it really is lovely having this community of enablers, isn't it?! Your three tan boots seem perfectly reasonable to me. That last pair with the light-coloured sole is very special! Would love to see how you style them!

Ack, finding comfy but stylish brown boots is surprisingly much harder than it should be, isn't it? Gotta try on a lot of frogs before you find your prince, lol!

Here's hoping the 'Oats' work out for you

You said it, Zaeobi! I used to adore shoe shopping but it has become more of an ordeal now. I hate the disappointment of seeing a style I love and knowing just by looking that it will cause me nothing but pain.

This brown pair from Free People might also warrant a try on... While I know Blundstones will work for my foot, I'd really prefer a higher shaft for cropped pant lengths. Hope springs eternal.

Someone's been to Shelmerdine

lol -- Just the website. Might trek out there today, though!

Love that free people pair!!!!
Definitely worth a try

Good luck with your boot search! Finding comfortable footwear that goes the distance and meets sartorial needs is very challenging.

And with lack of options both in-store and online in Canada can further frustrate!

I have short wide feet - not easy to fit - and a right foot prone to plantar fasciitis. I’m also on my feet all day. Fortunately my footwear needs are few and casual items fill almost all holes.

So I’m no help really! But I wanted to thank you for this post. I had decided this fall I was going to try Blundstones again (I had them several years ago and never got them 100% comfortable) but thought this time if I got leather-lined ones, I’d be in business. But the discussion of shaft height and ankle fit here has made me realize that higher and closer would be much more useful. Mostly so I can wear wide crops for a longer season. Those Ecco Nouvelles are now on my radar so thank you. Planning to go and try them this afternoon!

The Free People boots are gorgeous. Shaft height is perfect for crops and skirts. They have a side zipper. The colour is a beautiful brown bordering on burgundy, which I think would be very versatile.

But they're too narrow. At almost $300 and exchange-only, I couldn't even bring them home to see how they felt after wearing a bit...

So, to quote Angie -- onward.

I tried the Blundstone in the Oat colour today too -- the colour is less pinky than Pearl. But for some reason I am still not fully convinced they are "the ones".

The Miz Mooz are too narrow. Hopefully tomorrow I will try the Eccos.

Kerry --- look forward to hearing how the Eccos work for you!!

Aren’t they beautiful ? I was seriously eyeing them last year but their very non- customer friendly return policy kept me from buying them . FP footwear is an odd fit for me too .
