On the subject of dated . . . keep or sell this coat?

I have a velvet blazer from Gap I am waffling on whether to keep or not. It's the exact same as the one in this eBay listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/140614.....644wt_1054
My hesitation is the basically straight cut and the rounded collar points. I do like the heavier velvet fabrication as a way to stay warm and still dress up a bit in winter. I might possibly try pairing it with my now skinny satin pants as a sort of faux tuxedo look. What do you think? Thanks!

It looks good and it really depends how it fits you.
It doesn't say dated to me but you better listen to other opinions.

Oh, it looks pretty good! Now that you're finally where there are plenty of cool months, I'd hang into it and try it with the satin pants you mentioned, and see what else comes to mind. . .

I like it's style - there's nothing dated to my eyes (although I'm certainly not the last work on that).

Actually what comes to mind is the eclectic potential it could have -- and that makes me think of Angie's client, Karen, and the unique jacket she wore. . .

I don't think it looks dated! It's looks like its on the shorter side though, so I'd be careful to mind proportions when styling it-- pair it with a longer shirt underneath, etc. (:

I would keep, love the fake tuxedo idea. It is something you might always find a sudden need for when you don't expect it. Life isn't always predictable!

It has a vintage vibe in my opinion and I like it. I don't think it's dated. Love the idea of wearing over the skinny satin pants. I could also see this over a pencil skirt or bootcut jeans! Keep.

I like it. I didn't wear my velvet blazer at all this winter but I still really like it, the fit is very nice and it still feels current. I'm holding on to mine.

I think it would work with the slim satin pant. It does depend on how you feel in it. Do you feel fab? If so, keep. If not, sell. How helpful is that?

What Rita said - I didn't wear mine, but hope to next year. It doesn't look dated, but hard to tell when it's not on you. It appears boxy in the photo, but might not be on your body. Can you try to style it and photo?

I think one piece doesn't make an entire outfit dated - I think an entire outfit has to be date, if you know what I mean? I'm sure you can dress this in many ways, if you feel good with it on.

Looks vintage to me, rather than dated. Whether that jives with your style is up to how you feel about it, but I definitely don't see dated.

Okey dokey, here it is. I just have on jeans and a tee but the jacket hits right at my hipbone, just about where my jeans meet. It is pretty thick, and straight cut, so not a nipped, tailored look. Maybe that's why I was hesitating on it? Also converts to a mandarin collar which is nice when it's 20 out.

After seeing the pictures on you, I think it's worth seeing if you can make some outfits with it. BUT, I'm skeptical about pairing them with the newly fab skinny pants. Velvet and satin together could go wrong quickly. I like the idea of having it be a dressy foil to a more casual outfit. Kind of like that you did in the pictures but with a little more intention.

Alecia, that makes sense, it could get very um, Vegas lady at a slot machine, pretty quickly, huh? I'm ashamed to say 4 years ago I wore it with my black velvet Editor pants. Like a velvet suit of sorts - yikes!!
Tanya, I actually have a cropped tuxedo jacket that fits more closely so I have that base covered. I would not spend the $$$ to tailor this, so it's as is or off to donation.

I'm curious to see this over a fitted dress, or over skinnies. Might help the boxiness. I really like it with the mandarin collar done up, too.

Hmmm, it seems it's not great just as is, but might need some help. I honestly don't think I want to invest anything in trying to tweak it. So perhaps it is time to move on. It's my only straight/boxy jacket I have; I have plenty of nipped and tailored jackets already. Guess this validates that boxy on a shorter hourglass isn't such a good look ha ha!

Boxy jackets look fab on short hourglasses - but they need to be *intentionally* boxy. This jacket is supposed to be tailored, yet it's not tailored enough. Hope that makes sense.

I think I get it . . l think. lol. There are no darts or seaming to tailor this in, so I assumed it was supposed to be a typical mandarin collar, straight look to it. So you're saying it's neither here nor there, not boxy or tailored but rather just in the middle?

I'm sorry to say that this jacket does not get my love. It is ok, but to my eye it seems a bit too roomy, and not intended roomy. And if you do not intend to get it tailored and you are covered up with other jackets, well - then this might be the time to say goodbye. But I'm no expert. On the other side I like the mandarine collar done up. And the view...*sigh*..

If you tried this on in a store today would you repurchase as is? I think on you it is not as flattering as it should be and if you have others that are then I would pass it on.

I'm in agreement with the other commenters that it's not tailored enough to highlight your pretty figure.

And... good gracious, is #5 your backyard? What a spectacular view you have! Wow!
