Olympic uniform controversy

I’m surprised the Olympics are even happening. Anyway, there’s a bit of controversy (tempest in a teapot) over the Canadian closing ceremony kit - some love it, some hate it. I think I have it hanging in my closet!

I like Canadian street style denim jacket a bit more than astronaut style all white look for American team . Casual approach feels right for me.

Hmm. Not really a fan of the denim as performance material for athletes’ uniforms. I think it would be hard to get comfortable fit and aesthetics across a wide range of body builds. Plus laundering seems more difficult.

Why on earth does Ralph Lauren still get to design the US uniforms after the debacle with his logo on the last ones being as big as the Maple leaf on the new Canadian ones? More importantly, there has been a push to get the industry to be more inclusive, and they chose the old white guy? Ugh. Sorry, Carla, I know this thread is supposed to be about Canada & your uniforms, but from what I see, you’ve got little to complain about compared to your neighbors to the south (us).

I like the US design better this round; last round they all looked like tennis players. Plus most of the closing kit is actually made in the U.S.

It’s a cute jacket but doesn’t look like an Olympic uniform. Not to me anyway.

IMO, nothing will compare to the fantastic gloves Team USA had from a few years ago.

I am sure the biggest objection is that that Maple Leaf is in Bruins colors!

I was supposed to go to the Olympics, but that ain't happening. SIGH. I can't believe it's going forward at all, either.

Yuck. And can we not find another sponsor ? The Bay and their logo are - well, yuck. I remember entering a design competition for the Canada Summer Games uniforms a million years ago. That was fun - and why I didn't win remains a mystery to me

I actually like a casual take on the Olympic uniform. The US uniform is like a country club uniform I don’t get the space reference.

Angie's right on on this one - I like it all.

FYI Fashintern, I googled around a bit and found out that Ralph Lauren has had a multi-year contract from 2008 thru 2020. So maybe next cycle there will be another designer.

Having worn a disappointingly blah sports team uniform. https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....rt-capsule I would happily wear either country’s outfit! I like the cheekiness of the Canadian kit, and the preppie glamour of the US outfits.

There were so many complaints about our outfit in 2017, everyone was sent a different (equally blah) jacket a couple months later. I kept the t-shirt and competition suit, but donated the rest, including the second jacket

I love the denim jacket. My guess is that the Bay designed it with sales to the Canadian public in mind. They always carry items from the olympic uniform in their stores for sale, and It is the type of jacket they can easily sell to anyone. They are thinking of their business plan!

FI, I would parse the diversity question differently; Ralph Lauren built a successful brand based on reinterpreting preppy and Western wear, while wading through a sea of anti-Semitism. The current myopic focus on race ignores religion and class barriers to success.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I feel like neither of these collections is anything particularly new. I'm pretty sure Canada has done denim jackets in the past, and Ralph Lauren still looks like... Ralph Lauren. This is what we get for holding the 2020 Olympics in 2021. We're going to end up trapped in a time loop! (I will not be surprised if it gets cancelled/postponed again.)

I like the Canadian uniforms. The denim jacket is perfect for the closing ceremony and the after party. It’s different enough to stand out. The USA uniform seems so preppy....meh.
