My beautiful new closets are full and my bank account is empty. I have more clothes than I can wear, and I am tired of shopping and re-arranging my budget to accommodate the latest "must have." I am officially on SYC at least through October, and I am really shooting for the rest of the year

Anybody care to join me?

PLUS, I am also going to up my personal ante, commit to dropping the peri-menopausal weight I've let creep on, and not end my SYC until my clothes are all too big on me and must be replaced.

*kicks rock* Uh, without saying too much, I've been bad. REALLY bad. Fall always gets me. Honestly, my biggest issue is I really need to clear out the clothes I have designated as resell. All the giveaway and donation clothes always make it out the door quickly, but these resell items are hanging around. I really should get them out of here before I move so I don't disrupt the feng shui of the new pad.

I think forcing myself to shop with the proceeds of reselling would be the perfect motivating factor.

I just deleted my ebay watch list (with the exception of items for my daughter, that doesn't count). I'm selling lots of stuff in the next week or so, and if I don't make any money, I'm not spending it! (Grits teeth)

I really ought to join you on SYC but I have all these gaping wardrobe holes that still need to be filled. The per month spending has been kind of crazy and I know that the pre-xmas/fall sales are going to tempt me further.

I've realized that I am socially and physically inequipped to SYC. I'm married to a man who buys and sells. I enjoy buying and selling. Shopping is my *one* life's passion (next to cat psychology, but that doesn't really fill the weekends).

BUT, that doesn't mean I can just buy everything, willy nilly. I think I'll join on a SYB basis, the budget being my sales proceeds, and the #1 caveat being the 1-in-1-out policy.

I really should be shopping for Christmas presents, anyway... o_0

Mary, I am knee deep in SYC and am partically giddy at the though tof you goind SYC. It is so hard not to shop when all of my style inspirations (that's you, and QueenMum, and Kari among others) are showcasing new purchases. It will be interesting to see how you rework your wardrobe (I am sure it will be killer) and who else joins in.

MK, this will be so simple for you as the pieces in your closet are super fab and can be remixed with ease. Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a round of applause as this moment is what everyone strives to achieve--A COHESIVE CLOSET.

Now perhaps the hard part will be NOT shopping, but you are strong and can do it!

I wonder how we can make SYC more fun - more gamelike. Perhaps that will provide a new stimulation to fill any void left by browsing sites or shopping on foot.

Here's an idea! I forget what site it was, but the idea was, out of every outfit, you take one item and then create a whole new outfit with that item. Everything else can be different, but one item remains the same. Then you select one item from *that* outfit, and create a new one, and so on. Underwear doesn't count, but prominent accessories do.

Whoever does this the longest wins; whoever does it with the most flair wins; whoever can make the same item look utterly different wins.

Note: We'll have to figure out the rules for laundry day, because (for example) no way in this heat can I wear the same shirt two days in a row. Maybe we claim a Laundry Day Exception - but only once a week.

If this sounds like fun, we need a name for it. Like, Pass it Forward or something. And of course, document!

MaryK...I am so with you (on both the "I have enough clothes" and the "I've emptied my bank account" and also the "I'm just tired of shopping")

I've got a couple of keep or return items to deal with this week, but as of October 1 I am also on SYC...going to try for 3-6 months. Look for my official announcement next week.

I am on extreme SYB ($25 per month!) till the end of the year at the very least, so I will be with you in the spirit of SYC. I also have some weight loss goals to keep me from "straying" and buying something now that may or may not fit properly later. That said, our first H&M is due to open in the next few months so it will most definitely be an uphill battle!

I'm a fairly newbie here -- have followed this blog for a month.

However, I cannot for the life of me, figure some of the acronyms in the posts.
After several days, I understood the meaning of W.I.W.

What does SYC and SYB stand for please?

If only a select group understands the spoken code here, it excludes all others.

Am I missing a link on this blog that explains some of terms used here?

SYC = Shop Your Closet, that is, not purchasing new items but making what you own work.

SYB = Shop Your Budget.

I believe there is a link to these somewhere on the site.

I understand the shorthand can get confusing to a new member. Just like anytime you start a new job or learn a new skill, acronyms and jargon are very common on internet message boards. A glossary is definitely something we have discussed to make the transition for new posters easier.

Well, I spent my fall/winter budget and am now in saving for Christmas mode. With the tiny exception of one pair of tennies I still plan to buy. I haven't bought sneakers in three plus years!

Woohoo! Go Mary--- I really think you will enjoy the chance to just luxuriate and experiment with all the beautiful things you already own. Plus, I don't think there should be any shortage of interesting WIWs.

I'm in purchase mode right now, but I like to do a shop near the beginning of the season and then SYC the rest of the season, with a few allowances for finding lucky pieces that are on my long-term search list or a love affair. If neither of these come up, sometimes I will save/allow myself a little money for an inexpensive scarf, top, or accessory or two toward the middle to end of the season (especially during our very long winters here). Also, I always try to allow enough money for replacement jeans, shoes, and tees when the need crops up. On my current rotation schedule end up buying non-premium bootcuts about once a year, new tees once every year or two (depending on summer or winter Ts), and shoes every 6 months (although as I expand my variety I won't have to replace as often). My pattern is shop during late August/Sept./early Oct. then not again until April and May.
