In another thread Lyn requested help with an abbreviation so I thought I'd start a thread of commonly used abbreviations on the forum, hopefully this will make things a bit clearer to newcomers (and current members). Please add any others you use x

I'm usually pretty good with acronyms, but "ATL" had me stumped for a while. Until I recognised an item and it all fell into place.

I'd like to put in a vote for not using abbreviations or acronyms in the forum. I think it's much more welcoming to newcomers and outsiders to just write out the words. Using acronyms is kind of like using an inside joke, it's rather exclusive.

Personally I don't think it takes that much longer to type; if you really find that it takes too long there are special browser extensions you can get that automatically expand acronyms.

The relationship acronyms that Khris posted are really baffling to me - where did calling someone "Dear husband" or "Dear son?" come from - but I'm usually able to figure out who people are talking to when they use those acronyms.

FWIW is brand new to me - I guess I never knew what that meant when it was used on the forum previously.

I don't know Kari. I never heard of DH or DD until I started posting here, but I always assumed it was because we don't post on or read parenting forums. I don't know if the people who use those acronyms do, but that would be my guess. Wonder if anyone can confirm or deny.

I don't post on many forums, but whenever I do, all of them seem to have their own culture/lingo. It doesn't bother me or make me feel less welcome.

NaturallyCurly's forums seem to have an entire language developed. Again, it didn't bother me. If I want to be a part of a community, I'll take the time to learn, or I'll simply ask.

Yep, all the above abbreviations are familiar to me from other sites, except, of course, for NAS, but I figured that one out right away. LOL etc.

Hmm. Khris, I don't think I've seen those abbreviations anywhere else on the internet before. However, it didn't prevent me from grabbing the gist of the posts that use these abbreviations.

Other brand name abbreviations I've seen:

FS - Franco Sarto
SW - Stuart Weitzman
LC - La Canadienne

I'm sure there are others we use that I'm not thinking of.
