Note to self, don’t buy......

-Fragile open weave sweaters because they always snag the first or second time I wear them!

Horizontal stripes! Ugh! I never wear anything with horizontal stripes so why do I keep trying to make myself join that party! I am not a stripe person, stripes make me look like I am wearing a prison jumpsuit. Just say NO!

My temporary don’t buy list includes white shirts, jeans and cocktail dresses. I am oversupplied, and might even have a lifetime supply of jeans!

On to you.........what shouldn’t you purchase.......

Wide leg pants. I love them hypothetically; however, when it comes time to pick something out of my closet, I rarely reach for them.

Socks. I don't need anywhere near as many as I own, and yet it's so easy to buy socks because socks are so much easier to fit.

Undergarments. I have more than I'll wear if I wore a different set every day for at least a few weeks. I do, however, need a couple of bralettes for sleeping.

Slippers. I have 2 pairs of actual slippers, my new dr scholl's slip-on shoes I'm wearing as slippers, and a pair of The Sak crochet & leather boots that make great slippers in colder months

Dressy dresses — always drawn to them but no occasion to wear them. If I can’t wear it to work OR as a weekend day dress it is ‘off limits’ for me.

Heels above 2”.

Jeans for summer. (Too hot!)

Temporarily: dresses... hard to resist with the current dress mania here ;). But I’d better start wearing the ones I have more often and upping my accessory game to prevent boredom. And blazers and cardis: again, wear the ones I have more often!

I also recently realized I should never buy a ‘seperate’ without knowing for sure that I will like it with one or preferably more items from my wardrobe - no more generic thinking ‘hmm this grey top will definitely work with some of my bottoms and toppers’

Other than that I have lots of self-imposed style, fit and fabric rules but will not get into that ...

Black high heels. In fact any heels higher than 7cms, but especially if they are black.

I do not need any more coats or jackets. My climate is not even particularly cold. I am on a strict one in one out policy when it comes to coats and jackets.

I don’t need to buy black tops. Once they were workhorses for me, but my tastes have changed and can make do with what I own.

I don’t like wearing cardigans. Something about them, the lack of structure on loose ones and the retro feel of fitted cardigans makes these instant orphans for me.

It is nice to reflect on these. I could probably add more to this list.

Staysfit, it is great to set your boundaries and helpful for me to read your post. My twin is arriving next week for a month and when shopping with her I have been known to purchase things that are amazing, but don’t work as well in my world. On my last shopping trip with her I stuck to my resolve, but that was only for 5 days. A month? I am going to need a lot of self discipline.
I do not need any sleeveless dresses, no matter how many amazing ones are on the market.
I have plenty of casual Maine coast classic style tops (stripes, solids, a nod towards nautical or preppy in all sleeve lengths and weights).
No cropped or BF style jeans! I have more than enough!

I will allow myself one piece that matches something my twin buys, but her dream item had better not be from the above categories!

i am making myself not buying any more sandals. i love them, and there are so many. also they are going on sale now. It has been a very cold spring and so far some days are too chilly for them in the morning hours. I really need more sneakers for my lifestyle, so buy sneakers not sandals!!!!!

So good to know what we don't need as well as what we do.

For me, it's weekend pants. Those straight leg pants made out of the same fabric as yoga pants. Yeah, I have enough of those for several years.

Wool coats. Even though I live in the frozen tundra that is the Midwest, I do not reach for those coats below 40F (1C ?). Instead I bundle myself into puffers that are at least knee length until spring when I switch to trenches for about a week then segue directly into short and a tee.

Also, trenches since i have plenty. Saving pennies for a killer Barbour coat.

Note to self: buy MORE full length puffers in cute shapes.

Hah, I like polls! Here we go.

High-heel shoes - it's many years now that I have learnt this lesson, after too many *very* expensive mistakes!

Shirts (I think you call them button-ups here on YLF). I like them visually but I feel them cold, stiff and I hate the feeling of a collar on my neck.

Jackets - useless in my climate (too cold and not insulating in Winter, useless in Summer) and after some weight gain also a bit difficult to fit, but I like them soooo much! Still today sometimes I have to make an effort to resist the temptation to buy one !

Black items. This is the most recent. I finally realized that black does not make me happy so I decided to keep it minimal in my wardrobe.

Shoes. I loves shoes, have a fairly easy time fitting them and really feel like they make or break a look. But I have lots, really don't need more. Oh who am I kidding - if I see some I love I'll buy them anyway!

I have too many casual summer pieces that I can’t wear to work. I don’t want more and am letting them die by attrition.
...

That said, I’m replacing some key ones that are too tight or have otherwise given up the ghost. These are things I don’t have other versions of. (Jersey skirt, romper - yes, romper.) I can’t add to the overall size of this capsule though. I also have plenty of tanks tops etc. and bathing suits (seriously).

White or Ivory blouses -- long sleeve short sleeve sleeveless. I have several of each type and while they work hard in my wardrobe they are just uninspired. I also probably would be better balanced wearing a softer or darker color on my top half

I am waiting for NAS to stock up on essentials and maybe a wild card. For now I need to wear the heck out of what I have.

Oh, gosh, I always keep a running do-not-buy list.

*jeans, unless they're black 501s (direct replacement)
*t-shirts
*jersey skirts
*jersey dresses (though I made an exception this summer and am very happy about it!)
*flannel, chambray, oxford shirts (these are essentials for me but I currently have three of each, which seems to be about perfect)
*breton tops (see above -- I'm not allowed to buy until I need a direct replacement for one of my current three)
*casual warm-weather footwear (the season is so short -- I have a perpetual imbalance between summer and winter footwear, but I have a much harder time finding winter footwear that makes me happy, and I'm less likely to compromise on winter shoes because boots are so expensive!)

Sigh. I am in the market for everything. No limits right now. It just has to fit into my micro-capsule scheme.

That's it!! Don't buy anything that does fit seamlessly into the micro-capsule. Period.

My weakness is lightweight waterproof jackets. I have every kind of windbreaker, raincoat, trench coat etc... which I could possibly use. It’s hard to cull them because they all have different styles and strengths. Definitely shouldn’t buy anything that is not a direct replacement.

I should probably stop buying dresses, but I don't want to. So I'm not going to. At least not yet. It's not often a great dress season comes around. Anyway, I'm still looking. It doesn't hurt to look, does it?

I am not allowed to buy any more dressy, non-waterproof booties. Not until I've worn the several perfectly decent pair I own more than 12 times each. Oh, unless I find a great pair in navy, that is. Then I can buy.

I am not allowed to buy cropped flares. I don't like how they look or feel on me, no matter how cute they look on others. Cropped wide legs/ culottes are a different story. I love those.
