Thanks everyone, and I really appreciate the comments about the photos. I said before, it's really my only creative outlet.
I can't believe I let my camera collect dust for one whole year and I give 100% of the credit to my terrific 19 year old son, Danny, who is a self-taught photographer (some of his work is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/drosenbergphoto/).
Literally he gave me a 45 minute crash course in what to do, I took notes, and now I'm practicing. I have always loved photography, and I really love photography plus words (like Humans of New York? How about that great guy, and all he is doing). Which is what we are doing here!
I talk about getting started here, and my subsequent posts in January also refer to how I'm taking the shots.
As a reminder:
- Camera : Canon eOS Rebel SLI
- Lens: 85mm (because Danny told me to use it...I have no sense for focal length yet)
- Weather/light: cloudy day, the sun was going in and out while I was shooting.
- Settings: f 1.8 (very open shutter), ISO 100 (for outside shots), shutter speed - 1) 800 2) 640 3) 1250 4) 640 (due to sun in and out).
- Remote - this is a wired remote that plugs into the camera. I had bad luck trying to use wireless remotes, but this one is great. I push the button and have 10 seconds to get to my spot, and then it takes 6 shots, 3 seconds apart (you can set that any way you want).
- Focus - the camera is on auto-focus. In this post I discovered the problem with autofocus in the woods where the camera was focusing on lots of different branches and leaves instead of me, and I should have manually focused. When you are shooting into a fairly open space, then you are the subject and the camera will auto focus on you. Danny likes to take shots with the subject in the middle of the street, for example.
I would love to take a class from Greg someday. My dream - a style session with Angie, and a photo lesson from Greg!
Hugs to everyone, needed a boost today.
