I just had to cull 3 cotton knit tops (t-shirt weight) from my closet because they developed holes. They hadn't been worn more than 3 or 4 times, so this is ridiculous. This keeps happening, no matter the brand, no matter the price.

I hate ironing and love soft fabrics, so I'm sticking with my poly tops--except for winter sweaters, which are must haves. I can't keep sinking $ into poor quality, no matter the style. Ugh!!!

That's too bad. It's so frustrating when shirts develop holes like that.

I wonder what is going on there? I have cotton tops I've had for years and nary a hole.

I don't rightly know. It never happens to my DH's shirts; only mine. I wash in cold water on delicate cycle and dry on lie heat (except for the ones that aren't supposed to go in the dryer). I'm not in the mood to keep buying and keep trying to figure this out. Grrr!!!

If you have any remaining that don't have holes, I'd take care not to wash them with items that have zippers. That could be the culprit.Your knits might be more delicate than your husband's.

I also find knit tops of varying quality, and it is hard to know which ones to choose. I have almost given up on knit tees, but I still get knit layering tops for winter.

I wonder if it is the zips - I will look out for this Firecracker!!

Like Firecracker, I wash knits separate from zippers and also Velcro.

Are the holes in the same spot or randomly placed? I've heard of kitchen counters causing holes, too, such as leaning against the counter when washing dishes, or peeling carrots, etc.

ETA: I don't have this hole problem. I wear an apron in the kitchen in addition to isolating zippers and velcro in laundry loads.

Ugh. My AG knit top has a hole and I'm so disgusted. I'm sure it caught on my belt or something. Normally I don't have much trouble with my knots, and knots are my friends because they're very forgiving on my arms. But yeah, I'm going to have to be more careful from now on. Sorry you're having issues.

I share your frustration. Most of my fave knits have holes as well. No clue why but maybe belts, counters and possibly seat belts.

That is frustrating. If they have had so little wear, I personally would be trying to get my money back. Plenty of retailers will refund in that instance.

The holes are always in the front, so it might be kitchen countertops; but if they're so delicate that this happens to them after just a few wears, I don't want more knits. If it were zippers, it would be mighty odd for the holes to always be in the same area. I don't belt those tops, so it's not that, but I should be able to belt them if I want to without worrying that they'll develop holes. Like I said, I'm fed up with this. I do have two left, and will wash them separately, but I won't buy any more of them because this is too much trouble for a simple basic t-shirt knit fabric. It should be easy care, but it's not.

This happened in a Madewell knit merino sweater after just a single wear. I was so peeved I haven't bought from Madewell since. A single wear and the hole was on the front shoulder. Not a belt buckle or countertop in sight. It's frustrating. Usually holes emerge at the waistline for me. If I love the top, I salvage it by a repair. An EF top I repaired looks great three years later. That was the only EF top I've had do that. Cheaper tops, though, just get tossed. Those knits are often so thin repairs look like crap anyway.

I get the same problem, but I can't stand the feel of poly. I've been looking for linen and silk tops but haven't had much luck.

I am so sorry to hear this, BC. It would drive me crazy with frustration. I want to second Firecracker's comment about not washing with zippers or bras. Those seem the be culprit in my household.

Very strange, I have not had that happen. I would be bummed because I love wearing knits and with hot flashes some polyesters are very uncomfortable. I wonder if it would happen with other delicate fabrics?

If it's always in the front, it might be a belt buckle issue, too. Maybe the top sandwiched between the kitchen counter and a belt buckle.

For me it's the kitchen counters and sometimes belts. I semi tuck nearly always (or wear an apron) to try and avoid the issue and have for the most part been able to stop it. The holes that form most often now seem to be by the tag sewn in or near a pocket if there is one.

Yup. I am much more careful, now, about bellying up to the kitchen counters. The shirt gets pinched between the counter and the pant button. One Eddie Bauer shirt got a hole after just a single wearing. Also, I started semi-tucking and that alleviates the problem as well. After the Eddie Bauer shirt bit the dust, I spoke with the E/B sales associate about it because I thought it was a quality control issue and she mentioned that it happens to them often when working at the register. I wish I could remember to start wearing an apron around the house--a lot of shirts get damaged in the kitchen.

I don't wear belts, so the kitchen counter is the only other thing. I don't want to have to be that careful, though. I mean, really. It's a quality issue with the fabric, and I'm just going to avoid buying that stuff from now on. Those tops were for weekend wear, so at least I haven't lost anything needed for the office.

I must have long arms or my height relative to the counter is different because I have never had this issue with kitchen counters.

I haven't had this problem, unless my items are washed with clothes that have hook and eye closures, zippers, snaps, etc.

Well, last week I found a few knit tops at Sam's Club that look nice for the beach, and were around $12 each. One was only $9. At those prices, I won't worry if they don't last that long. Knowing my luck, though, they'll go some distance. They look nicer than the more expensive ones (around $60 each) that I purged.

I used to have this frustrating problem. I changed a bunch of things all at once (not very scientific) and now it's a lot better. 1. Like others said, I wash jeans and zipper-items separately from everything else. 2. Since I hate tucking, i wear a flat no-show belt (beltaway) to prevent the corner of my jeans waistband from rubbing up against my shirts (this helps with the counter/seatbelt issue). 3. I wear a camisole under most knit tops to prevent rubbing on bra straps/jeans etc.
