You know how I say I don't like ankle boots with rolled skinnies (for me)?

Well. I shoved my burgundy ankle boots on with my gray skinny jeans to go get the mail today because they were handy, and...I think I like it?

To me the keys are:
- the socks are thick (mitigates the chilly impracticality of this look for me)
-also the socks are patterned/decorative which makes it feel more intentional
-the jeans are slightly cropped to begin with and have a split hem -- I like the insouciance vs the tight, narrow rolls you get with standard skinnies

Not sure why this also feels less stumpifying than previous iterations I've tried. Maybe, paradoxically, because of the longer length of the top?

Anyway I will take it-- I'm only, what, five years late to this look?

I like it too! And I also have trouble wearing cropped pants in even cool weather, unless have complete coverage as you show here, and really, I hadn’t organized my higher- shaft ankle boots for wearing all day at home with cozy socks- except slipper- boots.
I plan to think about that for next winter.

It’s very cute, and I agree patterned, but also chunkier knit, aka ‘wooly’ looking socks are key. Your skinnies are also perfect here with the split hem and contrasting colour. Most of my skinnies are really more like jeggings and aren’t finished with any contrast and I don’t find they fold or roll up well. I did have one pair that was ink blue with black underside and those were cute for rolling at the time.

What makes the look here to my eye, is how well the boots fit around your ankles. Tailored and luxe. That's why the skinnies work any way with them.

Thinking more about the socks which several people called out as making the look: I had SUCH a frustrating time last year trying to find warm, non-itchy socks in the patterns and colorways I wanted! But, I finally did, and this really seems to be a case of putting in the work and now I am reaping the rewards.

Angie great point about the fit of the boots. You are reminding me that because gray jeans are so inherently casual and workmanlike I tend to prefer them styled in a way that involves a juxtaposition with some kind of dressy or luxe element. The boots provide the dressy/luxe element here. Will keep that in mind when putting together outfits with these jeans in the future. (Actually I suspect the fact that these and my black patent boots are *themselves* both stompy and luxe is what makes them such workhorses.)
