My New Year's closet purge

I had a fantastic New Year with my BFF while my hubby was working out of town (he's back now and we're going on a cruise tomorrow -- squee!!). One of the fun things we did was go through my closet and have her try on a bunch of stuff I was planning to give away. A lot of it fit and looked great on her, and she went out of here with a carload of new-to-her clothes.

I was particularly happy that a consignment dress that never quite clicked with me (here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ency-scarf) looked absolutely amazing on her! It made my waist look thick, and it makes hers look tiny! Go figure!!

Anybody else do a New Year's purge?

How Fabulous you are able to give so freely to others. I wish people would do that more!

I haven't purged yet, but i am trying to get some time to do so!

Not yet but I did find some things for my sister and for a possible future DIL from my closet. I've got a couple of other items that may head out west to our wonderful Sandy if she wants them. Isn't it fun to find a great new home for the things you don't wear?

I'm purging now - I've given some stuff to my mom and swapped other things with a similarly-sized friend, sold a few things on eBay, and sent a few things off to the thrift store.

Have a wonderful cruise! (Did you buy that Stop Staring bathing suit we were all drooling over a week or two ago??)

Mary, I was happy to see both the skirt I sent you and the wrap dress that I sent to Debbie live on in other's closets. I try and donate as much as I can and I always love seeing a piece get a second life on one of my friends! I have a few things set aside now that I plan on bringing back to Tahoe for the cute young gals at work there when I come back for a visit - short shorts, skimpy bikini's etc. I find purging hard because I've been about the same size give or take 10 pounds most of my life. Clothing can accumulate before you realize and there staring at you is a 20 year old dress!

I've filled another bag of things to take to the thrift store, but considering the major flooding in my state at the moment, I'm going to hold on to see if I can donate it to the flood victims...

It's nice to give clothes a good home. My friends and I often swap and most of my stuff looks better on them anyway

I did a purge a few weeks ago but I think I need to go through and be more brutal. Lots of good stuff is getting lost among the not-so-good-stuff.

Sounds like you and your BFF had a wonderful time and I'm sure she will appreciate her new wardrobe. What a good friend you are! I have no plans to purge my closet for now - still recovering from the holidays. Have a wonderful time on your cruise and be sure to get some pics of your cruise-wear for us!

Congrats on your purge. When I do stick to purging a good friend of mine who has multiple siblings and/or my sister make out very well with my stuff. And the items ALWAYS look better on them too!

I also did a New Year's purge. But it was mostly knits that are on the older (but still intact) side...so I wouldn't give them to friends, I think. I've got another suitcase ready to roll down to Goodwill.

That is so great! I am planning a *major* purge, starting tomorrow when DH goes back to work...otherwise he always says 'keep that, or why are you getting rid of this'? to everything I am trying to get rid of! lol...never mind it doesnt fit correctly or Im beyond tired of it! What a lovely way to bring in the new year, Mary! Has your friend booked the date for next year, too ? I'd love to pass on unused things to a good home but I usually end up giving them to the charity store as my friends are different colouring/size/shape....

Every new year I do a major ruthless purge of my whole life: clothes, households, cosmetics, books, paperwork, etc. It is one of my New Year's traditions. Each year I am amazed at how much stuff I accumulate over the year! I'm like Tricia and give some to friends, sell some on ebay and some I donate to my favorite charity thrift store where 100% of the profits goes to a home for women and children affected by AIDS in India. I always feel so "cleansed" and "free" afterwards.

I did a major purge of my closest on Friday. The husband and I went thru each and every item in my closet, eliminating those that did not fit properly, that did not flatter, or that I just did not love. Then we compiled a least of my wardrobe gaps. On New Year's day, we went shopping and I was able to fill in several of those gaps. I still have a few items I need to purchase....but I feel like I can "shop my closet" for the next few months.

Congrats! Ridding clutter is good for the soul

I've put a bunch of things on a "hold" pile, and I'm trying to wear each one to see how it feels. So far, one piece has gone back on the hangar, and another has gone back in the pile. I tend to be the kind of person who gets rid of so many things that I regret it later!

BTW, should I save my items for a YLF swap? Did I hear mention of that somewhere?

Very nice! Like # 2! I did a little purge right before Christmas. Just a few things since I'm pretty good a purging all year round. Love making room in my closet for better stuff! Have a great time on your trip!
