My new rubric/style moniker

I've mulling over lately how my style has had both subtle and more obvious shifts in the last two years. My old rubric involved structure, color, retro, etc. There have been comments lately in my WIW posts (thank you always for the feedback!) that have me thinking it's time to revisit my rubric and redefine as needed.

So I've come up with the following definition for my style direction:

Easy elegance with edge.

Easy - not a fussy outfit; doesn't require constant adjusting; feels comfortable on and moves easily with me; looks like "me".

Elegance - perhaps a little like chic; I'm wearing the clothes, they're not wearing me; there is a bit of softness in the outfit; fabrics and how they move/feel are of utmost importance; not body con - more fluid but not over sized.

Edge - a little something in each outfit that keeps it from being too "ladies who lunch" or overly corporate; can be something as small as a chunky cuff or my footwear; provides some juxtaposition.

So what do you think? Does it makes sense with what you're seeing lately? Would love your thoughts and feedback

I think that describes what I see in your photos very well. It describes colour, silhouette and fabric - and is a great checklist while getting dressed. Nice!

This sounds like you and your outfits lately. Like Peri, I'm tempted to steal it. I'm glad that you explained what you mean by "edge". I think that you also have a fun, approachable factor.

This seems like it will be super helpful as you're shopping and trying on clothes, as well as when you're putting together outfits. I especially like the "edge" part, which will remind you to add some contrast to your outfits. The most important thing, of course, is that it makes sense to you!

*Actually I could stand to do some more thinking about my style. But I always admire your style and feel like I want to steal most of your wardrobe. So your style thoughts are a good starting place for me!

Sounds like a good fit for you, Shannon! I think your outfits have been great recently. While you're less obvious in the retro element than in the recent past, there is something rather "Martha Graham" and "Georgia O'Keefe" about EF designs. Perhaps there's such a thing as "arty classic," much like there is a "modern classsic" that I associate with a more updated sportswear look. I think your use of "elegance" alludes to this quality in your EF inspired looks.

I think your new moniker is a good fit. The words need to have the right connotation for you though, not so much for us.

You know, the edge part is definitely the thing I notice in your outfits. (I don't comment much on your outfits, but I do pay attention to your posts.) It's either a shoe or a bag or a cuff that is a little surprising.

I love these words for you, Shannon; mostly because they make such intuitive sense. They feel like how you dress. Just spot on.

Like Firecracker, I could stand to do a little more thinking about my style. I have sensed a shift in my own style and before I start flailing out of control I'd love to find my own terms to use for guidance. Could be a good weekend project as I review my closet.

EEE resonates with me as well. I think these words are a good description of what seems like your natural style. I guess you've mastered the Easy and Elegant part, and you do have that kind of chic edge that takes it away from the ladies who lunch.

This is very concise and it seems like something that will guide you well! When I read it, I couldn't help but wonder the "background" on why you chose each thing. That might also be helpful to reflect on?

For example, when I listed "comfortable but feminine" and "modest" as mine, I realized that it was because I wanted my clothes to empower me. I didn't want to give up on looking like a woman, but I wanted to look feminine in a way that was comfortable and functional because I feel empowered when I wear clothes like this, rather than either restricted in clothes that are too revealing or tight (for me) or less female because my clothes don't reflect my femininity.

I guess underlying this is an observation that feminine and comfortable are often placed in a juxtaposition, which to me does women a disservice, so requiring that my clothes give me both feels very feminist to me, which is why it's important to me and reflects my values and personality.

Describes what I have been seeing lately very nicely. I have been thinking about the elegance vs. edge factor lately. Or maybe it is the funky factor in my case. I like how you own them both.

Yes..that sounds pretty perfect. I love the new style moniker! The slight edge in your outfit is why they look so 'effortless'....not like you tried too hard to look perfect. But you look perfect anyways!

Late to this party, but in full agreement here -- this moniker seems well suited to what I see.

I also really appreciate Beth Ann's comment and wonder if she is right -- is there such a thing as "classic arty" (similar to modern classic, an offshoot of modern classic, if you will)? I think of gallery goers in NYC. Feminine,yet no nonsense. Edge, but not exactly hard edge. Something else.
