My hair. Is there anything I can do?

I'm itching to try something different with my hair, but I can't figure out what. Today I'm having what I consider a good hair day, but it looks a bit boring to me. I want something fun and different, though with very short, curly hair, I'm a bit limited. I don't like it straightened, so I want to work with the curls/waves. Is color my only option? Any other ideas? I'd love to look Hollywood chic. Or something other than MOTG.

Have you ever considered a curly pixie cut? Google it and get some ideas. I think it would look great on you!

I forgot to mention that I had a pixie for years, and did it twice! My hair is completely straight as a pixie. I missed my curls, so I grew it out.

Someone -- was it IronKurtin? mentioned InStyle the other day, and as I browsed around there I found that they have a Hollywood Makeover applet. You can upload a photo of your face, and try on all kinds of hair styles and colors. (You can try on Jared Leto, and Bride of Frankenstein but mostly, real celebs' looks).

It might give you a new idea. I tried one of Amy Adams' that looked good on me, and another was a Jennifer Lawrence look from a while back (which surprised me!).

Here's a photo of a pixie and when it started growing out. I don't think I pull off Audrey Tautou's look. I just look dorky when it's short and starts to curl.

And a 6-year-old photo from the longest style I had, which I think looks so blah. I don't like how flat the top gets when I have it longer, but maybe I just need a new shape if I grow it long? My problem is that I get impatient during the in-between stages and grab the scissors! I should have my husband lock them up...

I'd thought about doing a streak or two of one of those bright, unnatural colors, but wasn't sure if it would look funny on me. I've always wanted to be a redhead, but back when I used to color my hair, I always went darker because I also love jet-black hair.

PG, as a fellow curly-hair survivor, all I can tell you is that I'm growing mine out so that I can have more options with it. The shorter it is, the less I can make it behave -- the curls just go crazy with no weight to tame them.

Once I have a little more to work with, I'm going to go to Deva Chan (the "curly girl" salon) and have them cut it and show me how to manage it. I'll be glad to post about that experience when I go, but it won't be for several weeks.

April, I've been following the no-poo method for at 8 years, maybe more. It's made a WORLD of difference with my hair! I've found a few hairdressers nearby that work pretty well with curly hair... they're just very boring styles. I just want a look that's a little "out there" but no one ever knows how to do something like that.

I think out there for curly hair doesn't really translate in the same way as an edgy straight cut. Believe me, I lusted after so many of those, and they just never really worked out. Even when they looked great straight, they didn't look so great curly. The one excpetion is maybe a really exaggerated layered bob. Anyways, your hair looks curlier than mine, so maybe you could go for my all time favorite look, which is really big hair!

We are really close to hair twins, mine might be a little coarser though, and redder. I've also been no poo and following cg for years, which makes all the difference. I've been everything from pixie to mid back length and everything in between. I recently cut it to a just above the shoulder inverted bob. I have a great guy who does curly cuts and I love this length. It's not super stacked in the back, I didn't want anything too drastic, but there's a definite inverted line with nice length in the front to keep the curls in check and it gives me a little style, maybe even a teeny little bit of edge instead of just a mess of curls. So maybe an inverted bob would work for you?

You look great with it long or short, but how many people can carry off and look so awesome in this length? Not many, but you do.

When I saw your photo, my first thought was of Julia Ormond in Sabrina. I looked it up, and I'm not sure that the shape is as a great as I remember (first photo) so I found another one of her in short hair with a different shape -#2. I also love Jenna Elfman's hair in photo #3 but that would take a little growing out,,, just some ideas... (PS I love your curls and I love even more that you want to keep them!)

I would vote for growing it out. Like you say, if you go much shorter, you lose the curl, and I think if you try for an in-between length (between what you have now and shoulder length), it will just be difficult. I think that bobs with curly hair can be difficult to manage. FWIW, I think your hair is beautiful, and I liked how it looked in your pic where you showed how you had grown it out. I don't think that the top being flatter when your hair was longer looked bad at all.

I sympathize -- I always wonder how to deal with my waves (at least they've now softened to waves than the frizzy curls that plagued me in my teenage years). I usually end up taming them to some degree because my hair just seems to behave better when I do that -- it gets too unpredictable when I let it go wild. One moment it will look fine, and then I look in the mirror a little while later and realize I have some sort of weird lumpy or crazy bit sticking out somewhere. Sigh.

I think the pixie looked really cute on you, but I'd also be curious to see it a bit longer and shaped with layers so you don't get the flat on top, wide on bottom look (which I am very familiar with myself, as I'm sporting it right now -- I have an appointment with the salon today!). Maybe keeping some wispy bangs/fringe too.
