My first YLF Post

I checked on my profile and I joined up with Angie 16 years and 5 months ago. I had been reading YLF for several months and decided to take the leap.

My first post was a question about a new silk top I planned to wear to a reunion. It had long ties hanging in front. What should I do? Let them hang or try a bow or a knot?

The opinion was to let them hang. I added a black jacket--the occasion must have been a little cooler than I expected. I don't remember which jacket it was. Looks a little shiny. Most advised me to let the long ties just hang.

Oh my--looks like I was wearing pantyhose! And with open toed shoes.

Want to take a quick peek at my old self? I don't know the brands except for my jewelry--my beginning collection of David Yurman pieces.

Anyone else want to join me in my look back?

Ha! My first post was 15 years ago, asking about rubber flip-flops and gently challenging Angie's ban on them for anything other than poolside, at home, and post-pedicure: Let's talk flip-flops - YouLookFab Forum I distinctly recall tossing a whole bunch of flip flops after that, and there hasn't been a moment since that I haven't regretted it! Behold my current collection, below!

My first WIW, shortly thereafter, was a (blurry) work look, and honestly I would wear that or something similar today! If I were still working, which I'm not. I had those divine Jessica Simpson round-toe patent leather pumps in every color and I loved them, but no more high heels for me except on special occasions. And yes, Ms. Maven, pretty sure I'm wearing panty hose here, too.

Oh how fun ... The purple blouse colour is sooo pretty!!

Shocker, my first post was asking about finding one's best colours haha ... But my first WIW was a "mom of the go" outfit with terrible first gen smartphone photography ;D

Ms Mary--you made me laugh. Yes, there is a place for flip flops in our lives. And as far as I know, pantyhose. I don't wear them because I no longer wear skirts, but I do have a pair in my sock drawer. I've had to give up heels completely and I don't miss them.

Although I joined 10 years ago, my first WIW was posted only 5 years ago. I didn’t think my “outfits “ could be interesting to anyone.

I still wear these culottes and posted another WIW last November. But they were looser fitting 5 years ago

I got my first outfit posted 5 or 6 years ago - it’s all work looks since it’s dressier and more interesting than other ones. I was reading and checking YLF for 4 years before signing up and starting more active participation. Still have all the pieces - lol ( but only navy printed top from first pic is in heavy use ). And a lot more grey in my hair .

I joined 17 years ago when we hosted photos on photobucket. My account is long gone but I found a few golden oldies to share and giggle at. I was eager to find some sort of style…
It was also fun meeting some Fabbers in real life too and going to Ms Maven’s clothing swap!

OOOH!!! Soooo fun!!! I'm loving it all! Aptly nostalgic.

I'm humbled by the loyalty of the participation!! 15, 16,17,18 years!!! WOW!The forum arrived 18 months AFTER my blog, and I wasn't even the first person to post on my own forum! It took off right away, and the rest is history.

kellygirl I forgot about the clothing swap. That was fun. I don't remember which one of you carried off that leather coat I brought, but I hope it brought many years of enjoyment to the new owner.

As I remember, items left over at the end were donated.

Angie, I was going through old photos looking for good ones of the three Maven sisters. When you mentioned how long ago you started YLF, I had to check to see how long I'd been here. Although the cite to the original photos I had posted was long gone, I figured out the time frame and it just took a few minutes to find the outfit I'd asked about.

Thank you Angie, for providing this wonderful forum and for all your excellent advice through the years. And thanks to all the YLF posters who have shared so much of yourselves.

I'm not sure I can figure out my first post -- I went back into the history and the first one listed refers to others that I must have made before that, but they don't appear in order. One of my first posts would have been about identifying body type. And my first WIW was here, 14 years ago! Oh, did I ever need the forum's help.

Thank you for this post, MsMaven! I don’t have any social media accounts so the forum is my very first foray into interacting with anybody online. I feel so very awkward, too. I have been trying to mount the courage to do a WIW post. It is such a huge relief to know that this was a big step for some of you, too! I love that the forum is so supportive and kind to a newbie who has zero experience with social media in any of its forms. Maybe one day I’ll have a first WIW post to laugh about ten years later.

Great idea, MsMaven. I signed up 13 years ago, shortly after receiving an iPad for Christmas. I used the iPad to take photos, and snagged DH or one of the DSs to take outfit photos. They were pretty grainy shots.

Travel capsules were (and still are!) a favourite topic, and the first photos I posted. (#1) My first outfit post was a dress I was considering for pm dressing during a Caribbean vacation. (#2)

What a fun and timely post since I just emerged from years of fashion hibernation! Talk about nostalgia! I still remember the Seattle meetup when I brought my three kiddos--now they're all grown up! I was looking at my YLF blog (how great that it's all archived). My first post 14.5 year ago was asking about what is the minimum number of belts needed in a wardrobe (timely since none of my belts fit right now and I'll likely need to replace some). My first WIW post was a set of before and after YLF shots. Me in my fleece jacket and mom jeans and brown Merrell mocs that don't even match the black diaper bag, compared with my first Kate Spade purchases, a polka dot dress and black trench paired with red heels for date night. It was quite the steep learning curve! I love looking at everyone's first WIWs. It's fun to see where it all started!

It took me 2 yrs and 3 months to reveal my physical identity on YLF! After the forum was created. I hinted at my appearance here - at the end of the post. VERY subtle:

After many years, I began doing WIWs - because I was attending NYFW regularly, so I kind of had to. Also, seeing what I wore and why, made me more relatable and less mysterious on my own site. But I was never an outfit blogger. And I still don't do much on social media. Barely anything, in fact. Not my thing! YLF has always been about YOU - not me.

I post outfits on my own forum because that's very private. I am a private person.

Oh this is fun, love seeing all these older photos of everyone, you're a pretty stylish bunch even in those early days.

ANGIE- so interesting to learn that even YOU were hesitant to post photos of yourself initially.

I had been following YLF for well over a decade before I FINALLY join the forum almost 3 and half years ago. My first WIW photo is no longer available but in my 2nd WIW, I was still nervous to reveal myself self completely, however, I eventually did by my 3rd WIW.
Thanks ANGIE for providing a wonderful safe space for all to participate. It's fun having a photo record of my style evolution.

I will have been on the forum for 9 years later this month, I had been reading for a few months before that but signed up when I wanted to see all your photos. Here is a screenshot of my first outfit. I still have the jacket and the pants but not the long tank top or the sandals. I have also lost weight since then. I look a bit glum, I was going to my aunt’s memorial. She was a lovely aunt, gone a long time now.

This is so fun! I love peeking into the archives like this.

My first WIW was ten years ago, and featured my one pair of skinny pants and my one pair of tall boots — experiments never to be repeated! I still have the rugby striped sweater though; I keep thinking of letting it go, but it always sneaks back into rotation. I just wore it out to dinner last week. Should have taken a picture!

What a great thread!
I started posting on YFL 17 years ago. I found my first post, I was asking feedback about boots, and my second post had some WIWs. We used to post on photobucket then, so pictures are lost. I might have some on a now-defunct outfit blog of mine, but of course I don't remember the password
That said, looking through my posts reminded me that we haven't had a picture perfect challenge in a while. Do you want to play a round of picture perfect challenge?
