My first WIW post - YouLookFab Forum

So, I wanted to share a few WIWs, since I've enjoyed looking at everyone else's. I took photos of my work outfits for the last two weeks. Both Friday outfits were extra boring so I'll not post them.

Apologies for the poor lighting conditions. And the freakishly weird facial expressions that happened in a few. I hope I do not I make faces like this in real life!

Week 1:
1. Monday -- cream knit moto-zip jacket (Anthropologie)
unseen black camisole (Gap, ancient)
red/black "evil eye" scarf (Nordstrom Rack)
med-dark gray faux zip front pockets NYDJ "Ami" jeans
distressed black Frye Veronica buckle short boots

2. Tuesday -- schlubby outfit, and probably should not go to work, but notable because these jeans were my only ones for a long time!
red and white stripe rayon knit t-shirt (made by me)
burgundy merino wool hoodie (Lululemon)
light wash Levis 501s with factory-made hole (Levis outlet)
black Dansko "Olive" oxfords

3. Wednesday -- black not-leather jacket, M Studio (Macy's) -- one of my favorite wardrobe items at the moment
turquoise scarf, origins lost to time
black, white and turquoise splatter pattern rayon t-shirt (made by me, but not sure if this print is "me")
med-dark wash NYDJ "Bille" boot cut jeans
black Frye Carson ankle boots

4. Thursday -- my husband said that the cuffed jeans with boots reminded him of old Star Trek uniforms. (He hastened to add that this was not a negative judgement, lol.)
dark gray merino hoodie (Lululemon)
gray and white polka-dot scarf (Gap Outlet)
mint and white striped rayon t-shirt (made by me)
med-dark wash NYDJ "Sylvia" boyfriend fit jeans
Frye Veronica buckle short boots again

Week 2:
5. and 6. Monday -- black M Studio not-leather jacket again
light gray and white buffalo plaid flannel shirt (Uniqlo)
med-dark wash lightly distressed NYDJ skinny jeans
Dansko MJs I keep under my desk for walking to lunch -- oops. (pic 5) and new Converse that were on my doorstep when I got home that evening (pic 6)

7. Tuesday -- this is an old favorite outfit, worn many times. My "what to wear when I don't know what to wear" outfit. I would say that it is extremely casual, but since a skirt is involved people in my office think it's dressy -- lol.
grayish lavender cashmere hoodie (JCrew, old)
navy camisole (Gap, ancient)
navy linen skirt (Gap, ancient) -- my favorite skirt!
navy mary janes (Fidji)
black Fossil Morgan purse
8. Wednesday -- another favorite outfit that has seen many wears!
white and black giraffe cardigan (Anthropologie)
unseen black camisole (Gap, ancient)
brick red corduroy skirt with big @ss pockets (Maeve from Anthropologie, old)
black Dansko "Opal" mary janes

9. Thursday -- I really liked this outfit in real life, but in the photo it looks flat. I think it's because the t-shirt hem is hitting at the same length as the blazer.

It's so fun to "see" you, Runs With Scissors! I like your style a lot, and I could guess you were in tech from your clothing, before I looked at your profile. These kinds of outfits are my environmental norm, so they feel "right" to me.

I like 1, 6, 5, and 9. 1 for colour and coolness factor. 6 for lengths and proportions (and nice match between shoes and shirt). 5 and 9 for execution with flat shoes... Guess that's a length and proportion thing too.

So nice to see you! Thanks for posting so many different outfits at once! When someone is new posting WIW, it helps to see a selection. IMHO, the Forum does it's best "work" when we've seen a lot of someone's outfits -- when we have a sense of someones beloved wardrobe items (your black jacket) and present style.

I like all of these a lot. A few observations:

1. You do "schlubby" well. do you have a RATE side? For your "off" days you could play with more looks like this.

2. You have a sophisticated sense of fun -- shown in the playful sweater and Converse

I like 3, 4, and 7 a lot. I agree with your coworkers - a skirt is inherently dressier. Actually I like all of them, but 7 most of all. Congrats.

Runs With Scissors

Thanks for all the kind comments, everyone! It's interesting to hear some labels for my style, and I definitely identify with "sporty". Beth Ann asked if I identified with the RATE moniker, and yes, when came here and discovered that was a thing you could be, I knew instantly that it was me! Whereas before, I thought I was just a bit messy.

It's interesting that Mochi and El Cee liked my "schlubby" outfit (#2) because I almost didn't post that one. But, I have been wearing versions of it for two or three years so it is obviously part of the spectrum of "me". I made the transition from engineer to manager last year though, and I'm wondering how that should impact my style.

It's interesting that Kellygirl and Kari see my style as "arty", which I wouldn't have guessed. Though I did actually get an undergraduate degree in fine art. I had a somewhat avant-garde group of friends in high school, who nicknamed me "Muffy" because to them I seemed preppy! All a long time ago now, but funny how these things stick in your head.

Jenn, it's interesting that you picked me out as working in the tech sector based on clothes alone!

Kari, I love jackets and cardigans because my office goes from 66 degrees to 80+ during the day, so layers are a must!

Beth Ann, you asked if I had ever tried the giraffe sweater under the blazer. That had never even occurred to me! For one thing, in the past, cardigans I wear with skirts weren't long enough to work well with my jeans. But I have new jeans now that have a slightly higher rise, so maybe it's something to revisit.

Brooklyn -- yes, Lulu has some great stuff for sneaking into work. My only non-jeans pants are from Lululemon -- the Jet Crop slim and the &Go City Trek trouser.

This is a terrific lineup of styles! I immediately saw the RATE in several of them; I'm glad you've identified that and can play with it more. And the fun with the skirts and graphic items - it's great! And I can totally see the Star Trek TOS influence in #4.
