My first WIW and a K/R

Hello Everyone! After several years of just looking, here's my first WIW. Plus, I've included a picture of a new jacket I bought, but am still considering.

1 and 2 - Today's outfit, which seemed more exciting in the mirror than it does here. Perhaps the little details of clothing (like the patches on the elbows of the sweater) are harder to see in a photograph)

3 - Should I keep this blazer? I want a blazer to wear with jeans, but now that I see it in the photo, I'm wondering if it looks too dressy.

I love how the pink scarf subtly bookends the burgundy boots! And the sweater with elbow patches is TDF! YLF!!

The jacket is dressy. But since jeans are casual, I like the juxtaposition of the two items together. It could be used to dress up the jeans. But I am not sure if that is what you are after.

Welcome to the wonderful world of WIW I like the blazer with the boots & jeans (one of my favourite looks) but you are the one who will be wearing it - if it feels too dressy will you go to something else?

You are so cute! I love your smile. Love the casual sweater outfit with the cargos. I could see myself wearing something similar. Boots are great. The new blazer looks like it fits well. If you want something more casual, you could go for ponte or a tweed. Congrats on your first WIW! So happy to see you

Marmee! You totally look like an old friend of mine, and she used to call her mom Marmee (Little Women!).

I love the blazer but I had a hard time styling my Gabe, as you know - it felt too conservative for me to be able to dress down, and too conservative to dress up. That could just be me because plenty of people here have made such blazers look amazing, including Angie.

What a great look for fall; you look both playful and put-together! Those boots are darling! And I'm obsessing over those elbow patches! I'm such a sucker for awesome details, and the color is just fabulous.

I can see your concern about the blazer being too dressy, but it is a great style. I personally prefer a slimmer cut when it comes to a casual blazer. Mine is black with slim, 3/4 sleeves with a bit of ruching detail, single button and has a striped lining. I wear it almost strictly with jeans, and even roll the sleeves a bit to sometimes expose the stripes. But that being said, I am in no way claiming to be an expert on casual vs dressy blazers, after all, I'm a 25 yo stay-at-home (but badass!) wife and mom to an almost one year old baby boy, so blazers as dressy career wear are nowhere near part of my wardrobe!

You could easily dress the blazer down with one of your lovely sweaters underneath, and even with a more casual non-black shoe.

Hi Marmee! Fellow newbie here and I also just took the plunge and posted my first WIW pics. I love those boots with the jeans and the jacket looks great with the outfit. I personally don't find the jacket too dressy and I think you could wear it with a lot of outfits, dressing it up more or down. I think it comes down to your lifestyle and wear you plan to wear it.

I think the first outfit is very nice. I like the sweater with patches and khaki pants. I have a dressier black jacket and wear it a lot. It seems to work when most others don't and I've had it for years. I wonder if the one you have might be a touch big on you. The shoulder look a bit loose and the sleeves are a touch too long. Perhaps something a bit more fitted and a bit shorter would work better for what you are trying to achieve.

Welcome to the wonderful world of WIW! It's normal, by the way, to feel that the mirror and the photos tell a different story. Sometimes they do, and sometimes you need to read between the lines of both to get the truth! But it's a great way to learn.

Your WIW is really autumnal with the scarf and sweater. As for the blazer, I love it, but I'm a blazer person. I am wondering if it's a bit on the large side, also, as Dianthus said, but it's a bit tricky to judge the actual fit from the picture.

I like your blazer look, but I agree that it seems a little big, and not in a BF way. I like wearing my blazers over t-shirts or fine knit sweaters with jeans and boots, and rolling or scrunching the sleeves.

I love your casual sweater outfit too. Looks cozy.

I don't find the blazer too dressy with jeans; I love the look and wear this combo all the time. But,like the others I'm wondering if it is too long in the arms and perhaps too loose in the body. I do like the length .

I like your first casual outfit very much, and you're right, the details, while hard to see, make all the difference: the elbow patches, the peek of leopard belt, the red boots.

I love the idea of a nice black blazer with jeans! My first impression of this one, as others have said, was that it looked a little big on you. Could you try going down a size?

Do you think you might feel more comfortable in a ponte jacket instead? They are a little bit less structured and are almost as comfortable as a cardigan. Perhaps that would fit in better with your jeans outfit.

I personally don't think that jacket looks too dressy, but what's important is how you feel and whether or not you'd reach for it very often.

Also, the jacket does look a smidge too big...?

Hi, Marmee! You have nailed a great preppy/classic style. I love your boots, your colors, and the combos of various pieces in the first outfit.

I am not thinky the blazer is too dressy at all. It does seem boxy to me. But that could be my personal taste for a slightly more fitted blazer. I would listen more to others' opinions and your own preferences. But too dressy? Not at all.

Neel, I hadn't thought about the scarf looking pink, but now that I see it in the photo, I see that it does. Up close it is maroon and white striped!

Caro, you are right, I might not choose it very often, if I see it as too dressy.

Kellygirl, I think you are right about a ponte or a tweed. I had a great tweed last year that I wore a lot, but it developed a hole in the seem, and couldn't be fixed. I should keep my eye out for another. And I didn't even know that ponte jackets existed...here I come!

Una, that's it! It feels too conservative for me. Thank you for providing that label. That's so funny about the other Marmee. Not sure why I didn't think about that when I thought of it as a username. I can only aspire to such patient mothering skills!

Lovesarahdub, I'm a stay at home mom, too, so I'll wear it the same way. I would like the idea of 3/4 sleeves, if I didn't have issues with the feeling of them under long coat sleeves!

Lyn D, I wish I could fit a sweater under the blazer, but my shoulders are so wide there's no room.

Dianthus, the fit is funny, because I had to fit it to my shoulders. This is an eight, but the six was slightly tight...

Suz, I think you are right about looking at both the mirror and a photo. I also like to get feedback from my husband and kids (the live, moving version!)

Isis, I love the belt peeking out, too!

Parsley, I did try the six on, but it felt too tight. I think it might be that Theory isn't sized for me, or maybe just this jacket.

Amy, I love the boots, too. They have great buckles in the back which didn't show up in the picture, but I will be sure to do a closeup of them next time!

Mochi, I think you are right about the boxy fit. It even seemed like it stuck out at the sides (the SA said that it was just because it was new, but I wasn't totally convinced).

Angie, thank you for your kind words! I might keep it...if I don't find a better replacement. I went back to look at the shopping list you made for me after our closet session, and jackets were on it ("think blazers and knitted jackets that stretch")!
