Here's what I'm wearing, for hanging out on a cool (even chilly), drizzly day.

Hooded tunic sweater, off-white with tattoo print, embroidery, and some crystals thrown in (Spy Zone Exchange)
Scoop neck 3/4 tee in light blue (Three Dots)
Bootcut jeans (Red Engine)
Black ballet flats with elastic straps (Gentle Souls)
Dangly silver earrings with blue stone; one is kind of turned sideways in the photo--oops
Jade beaded friendship bracelet

This is a comfy outfit, but a style that I'm trying to migrate away from. My goal is to lean a bit more sophisticated, though I certainly don't mind mixing in boho elements. I've thought about letting the tunic go, as I don't wear it often anymore, and it is getting a bit pilled. But then occasionally, like today, it just feels like what I want to wear. Not sure why. Same with the shoes--I'm finding I don't "need" these casual ballet flats as much as I did when I first bought them, but they seemed the right choice for this offbeat outfit today.

Do you have items like that? Ones that don't quite feel like your style but that you do find yourself reaching for once in a blue moon? Should they be allowed a place in our closets?

I do have a demotion stage, when clothes become "at home" wear. (By that I mean, I don't wear them to work.)

I have a few things that aren't expressly my style that I still enjoy wearing from time to time, depending on my mood. Some days I feel a little artier than others or sometimes maybe more sophisticated, etc. I like having the options to express how I feel when it's not my norm.

Definitely! I have items that I don't wear often but that feel like me when I actually do wear them. The tunic looks great and I love that easy, casual vibe this whole outfit conveys. You look pulled together and stylish and I think the tunic should stay!

I also have some outfits that fit into that category. Sometimes I like to wear them for a stay-at-home casual day. I say keep!

Good for you! I have a few boho tunics/kurtas that I wear only when I'm at a yoga retreat or feeling very introspective. Usually they just hang unworn in my closet, but I like seeing them there.

Like Angie said, if an item makes you feel good or gives you comfort it can have a special place in your wardrobe.

Unless space is an issue, I think keeping items like this is perfectly fine. The look is easy and the print is fun. Why not? I would just watch that you don't buy new items that represent where you've been, but purchase only items that represent where you want to go.

Firecracker, I totally understand your boho side. The design on your top would be right at home on a pencil skirt this season. I would wear this to the Saturday morning Farmers Market or for a lunch at Cafe Gratitude.

Nothing new to add but I'll chime in. Yes, in fact I have a tunic that meant a lot to me for a while--wore it weekly. It doesn't seem too much like me anymore, but when I see it in my closet it makes me smile. When the weather cools down I'll see if I wear it again. In the meantime, I still want it.

I will say the tunic is flattering on your slim torso. When I look at you, I think a low-slung maxi showing off your slim mid-section would look so fantastic! This is a look I've liked for a while but hesitate because I don't really have the figure for it. However I'm not sure if it's a look that's even current any more. If I find any examples I will PM you!

I have a couple of "rainy day" items. I don't sport them often, but seem to grab them on days I want to feel cozy. I vote keep.
